THE TECHNIQUES

A s Imentionedpreviously,seventechniques-alterflnate picking,stringskipping,stringbending, arpeggios,sweeppicking,legato,andrhythm-are coveredinGuitarAerobics,onetechniqueforeachday oftheweek.Althoughtherearemanyguitartechniquesthatarenotpresentedinthisbook,Ibelieve theseseventechniquesarethemostessentialforguitarists.Masteringthesetechniqueswillreducelimitationsandequipyouwiththetoolsnecessaryto achievethegoalsyouhavesetforyourselfonthe instrument.

Here,now,isa briefoverviewofthetechniques'presentedinthisbook:

AlternatePicking:Notechniqueismoreprevalentandofgreaterbenefit-thanalternatepicking.A fundamentalguitartechnique,itcanbeappliedto any musicalcontextandisthetechniquethatseparates themen/womenfromtheboys/girls.Onthesepages, thetechnique,acontinuousalternationofdownstrokesandupstrokeswithyourpickhand,isapplied to everythingfromrockandbluestojazzandcountry

StringSkipping:Mostcommonlyassociatedwith rockandmetal,stringskippingisalsoquiteuseful whenplayingotherformsofmusic.Thepredominant focusofthestring-skippingexamplesinthisbookis thatofsingle-anddouble-stringskipswithinthecontextofblues,1azz,rock,andmetal.

StringBending:Theseexamples,whichmostlyconsistofblues,countryandrocklicks,featurequarterstep,half-step,andwhole-stepbends,aswellas moresophisticatedbendssuchasoblique,unison, compound,andpre-bends.

Arpeggios:Althoughan"arpeggio"inandof itselfis notatechnique,thecoordinationof right-andlefthandmovementsusedto pedormonecertainlyqualifies.Thedefinitionofanarpeggiois"achordwhose notesareplayedinrapidsuccessionratherthansimultaneously,"andtheexampleshereinillustratethatin practicallyeverypossiblecombinationontheneck, fromsimpleopenpositionthordcombinationsto advancedsweep-pickingconcepts.Whichbringsus toournexttechnique...

SweepPicking:Thepolaroppositeofalternatepicking,sweeppickinginvolvesusingonecontinuous downorupstroketo playtwoormoreadjacent-string notes.AlthoughmostoftheexamplesinGuitar Aerobicsapplyto rockandmetal,youwillfindafew interestingexamplesofhowto applythistechniqueto jazzandbluesaswell.

Legato:Ontheguitar,legatotechniqueinvolvespulloffs,hammer-ons,slides,fingertapplng,oranycombinationhereof.Basically,legatoisanycollectionoftwo ormore.notesonthesamestringthatisn'tarticulated witha successionofpickattacks.A widevarietyof suchlicksisincludedonthefollowingpages.

Rhythm:Muchlikeanarpeggio,"rhythm"lsn'tasingle technique,butratheracollectionoftechniquesused to performvariousfunctionsastheyrelateto aspeciflc rhythmicstyle.A fewofthetopicscoveredinGuifar Aerobicsincludebasrcstrumpatterns,open-chord arpeggios,boogiebatterns,walkingbasslines,and muchmore.
