CANDIDATURE FOR SCOPE DIRECTOR-2016/2017.

Chioma Audrey Amugo - FGMSA GHANA

MOTIVATIONAL LETTER

I am delighted to present my candidature for the position of SCOPE Director for the term 2016/2017. My name is Amugo, Chioma Audrey, current Regional Assistant of SCOPE, Africa. I am 26 years old and a 6 th year medical student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. My first encounter with the exchange committee was in 2012 when I was appointed to be a member of SCORE. And after that, in 2014 I ran for elections and became the LEO for my LC and later the NEO. This was not in any way easy and I went through a lot and was tested on several occasions but I still stood my grounds despite all the odds, trials and tribulations because I had a vision for exchange in Ghana and Africa, and I knew I had to endure to create those changes I wanted to see. Since then, I’ve worked in SCOPE for close to 5 years now, so I know the possible problems a lot of NEOs would face, and I have gathered enough experience and patience to know how to handle such situations, since I know that dealing with exchanges isn’t entirely a walk in the park. Why do I want to do this? For anyone who has ever talked to or worked with me, it is obvious that I love working in and for the association. I have learnt so much through my commitment to SCORE and SCOPE. I have learned organizational and leadership skills, met fantastic people and grown as a leader. This is evident in the way I have worked since I became LORE, LEO, NORE, NEO and currently RA. However I am sure I have much more to learn and I am looking forward to it.

Moreover I believe that I can do a good job, I am passionate and committed, positive and selfless. Working with the current SCOPE IT has made me a different person. I now understand what it means to really work as a team and have a family away from home. Working with a great leader like the current SCOPE D is a privilege and I will work relentlessly to achieve as much as has been achieved this term. It is my great hope to work with another team as this. If given the opportunity, I promise to dedicate my time to this standing committee, and seeing as I’m almost done with school, with the intention of postponing my internship, SCOPE will be my number 1 priority as it has always been. I believe in two heads being better than one, therefore I try as much as possible to listen to peoples’ opinions but at the same time, not get overwhelmed by them. We learn everyday, and I believe we shall all learn from each other. I have the capacity to learn more and grow even further. My plan this year is to work bearing in mind the Strategic plans of the Standing Committee and IFMSA as a whole to ensure continuity and sustainability. This doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be innovative ideas. It only means that they will be aligned to fulfill the ultimate goal of sustaining SCOPE. I am, apart from medical school, engaged in a whole lot of extracurricular activities, both educational and social and I believe this has given me the ability and skill of efficient time management, which would be of benefit to SCOPE. I have a lot of ideas and plans which I intend to act on if I am given the opportunity. I would really love to share my love and passion with you all. Yours sincerely, Amugo, Chioma Audrey.

PLAN OF ACTION This is a preliminary plan of action, and hence stands to be adjusted if need be, and after consideration by the members of the standing committee. Also working in accordance with the SCOPE Regulations and IFMSA Bylaws I will be writing in points as this isn’t the avenue to explain everything in detail. But as usual, I will always be available incase anything needs to be clarified J SCOPE Strategic plans: For sustainability of the SC -Global health within exchanges (see to its fruition) -Database (continue working to improve database and fix existing errors) -Proper handing over: Can’t be emphasized. Proper and active use of the handover handbook so as to ensure continuity. Assistance from RAs and exchange trainers. Trainers assigned to new NEOs and just activated ones. Lessen the work on SCOPE IT. Also, new videos might help orient them. -Active social media platform (blog, instagram page, and also the database) as a means to promote the exchange program -Improve on trainings (Organize webinars, or videos on pre departure trainings, global health within exchanges, welcome to scope, now you’re a neo, how to activate SCOPE in your nom, etc). It is a well-known fact that people prefer to watch and listen than read. With all the manuals available, we still have NEOs asking questions that have already been answered. I would like to make this easier on NEOs and for everyone. -Capacity building on the local level (come up with video/manual on what is really expected in the teams. The NEOs are already trained, and the SCOPE IT can assess their capabilities and assist where need be. But at the local level, which is the foundation of the standing committee, little is known and can be done. Hence, we will work hand in hand with the NEOs and RAs to build

capacity through videos and manuals). -Idea cafes during GAs where new innovations can be discussed and ways of promoting the SC. This will be one way of varying the contents of the SCOPE sessions during the Gas. -Develop AWP for next SCOPE IT with a feasible timeline so we can achieve a lot -More internship opportunities apart from SCOPE exchanges: especially with our externals. -Improve collaboration with other standing committees eg SCORE, SCORA. -Continue in efforts to improve AQ and recognition: Updating logbooks, affiliation with more international medical bodies, ensuring active participation by students in the exchange program, etc NMO oriented goals -Activation of more NMOs, strengthening existing ones. Deactivating ones that pose a threat to the program after much has been done, to avoid mediocrity. All NMOs have to be moving forward for one to say that SCOPE as a standing committee is also moving forward. Its not about the quantity but about the quality. -Get feedback from NMOs to find out their problems and discuss solutions among SCOPE IT, other NEOs, small working groups or a taskforce. Continuous analysis and evaluation of NEO reports and feedbacks. -Create a taskforce to work on specific SCOPE related things. You can’t control/predict NMO officials’ selection, but u can control taskforce selection to ensure that motivated people are chosen. It could be created per region or generally (decision would be made by SCOPE members). Taskforce can be made up of writers, computer geeks (for graphics and videos), publicists, etc to promote our exchanges -Create funds for students who can’t go on exchange, hence giving everyone the chance to do this. Funding could come from exchange fees (eg 1 euro

added so that at least one student can be sponsored. Not restricted to any single region); through collaboration with the governments of the various NMOs (through recognition if we want this to be a reality); NMOs (by offering free internships. Students are to apply directly to NMOs offering the internships or SCOPE IT and fair selection made); Externals/NGOs (WONCA, FIGO, etc. Will also improve recognition) -Increase recognition with the various consulates by sending official support letters/brochures to the various embassies and explaining the exchange program to them. This will aid with the visa issues many countries especially in Africa and Asia pacific face every year, hence leading to a lot of avoidable cancellations. This is something that has been tried in my NMO and I believe will work in other NMOs. Personal Goals -Sacrifice my time and effort -Ensure to attend meetings (GAs + RMs as priority), whether or not I’m funded. Have been doing that. Will keep doing that -Build on leadership and managerial skills by attending TNTs, taking extra courses, etc to improve myself as an individual -Prompt response to emails and problems As always, I will be available to answer any questions you might want answered, or to clarify anything that needs clarifying. Thanks <3
