1. INNOVATION

A COMBINATION OF WORKING AND LIVING Project: Academic Project Category: Individual Work Instructor: Jiang Zhu Time: Oct. 2014 1

I call this project as an idea incubator, it is analogous to an integrated living and working quarter, it will provide the tools and opportunity for designers to remove the boundary between theory and practice. The new project will not just be a center for creation; it will be a living quarter for people and the community to engage through architecture. The 'incubator' mainly contains 3 kinds of "unit"---Modeling and Lecturing Unit, Designing and Living Unit, Reading and cafe Unit. The studio workspace will be optimized with the proper tools and materiality to support any types of creation. Beyond what is necessary, the architecture would be reserved and simple to not obstruct creativity and to successfully meet the designers' needs. The emphasis is not in form of the space itself, but rather the creativity and production that the space enables. 2

The aim ampus, as well as to make an innovation-----to combine living quarters with ction of the campus. The way of planning is a deep search for new ways of self hing, learning, livingand working. It is the integrated living quarters for people

Gathering Plaza

OPEN FRAMEWORK FOR CREATIVITY

The concept is an open system that can adapt to meet the whole faculty’s needs. Each function unit is surrounded by open plaza-space; They can provide temporary exhibition areas, critique venues, or added auditorium / event space. They can easily close portions of their functions without affecting the operation of the entire 'incubator'. The spatial concept is robust, it's an invitation for creation, an open space for knowledge and entertainment. Everyone can share their ideas and thoughts in everywhere----at the studio, in the cafe, or in the lecture hall. 5

UNITS FORMATION UNIT 1 SHARING SPACE This unit contains a modeling studio and a lecture hall. It will break down traditional boundaries between theory and practice by providing an open ecosystem for ideas and collaboration. It will be an open laboratory that encourages informal experimentation both inside and outside of the building. The ground floor has the open modeling space and multi-function rooms in 2 sides. The 2nd floor to 4th floor are lecture halls and multi-function rooms, here students can share thier ideas to others ordiscuss theories, lecturers can hold lectures or giving judgements to spectators. The unit of the interior continue outwards as small pavilions in the open park. UNIT 2 SOHO SPACE Unit 2 is the main unit in the department. It offers students and designers dormitories and breaks the boundaries between daily life and working life. It is a combination, in which students can live, study and rest without rushing around the campus. The unit provides endless possibilities. The best ideas come from collaboration on a more personal scale. The open space floor shifts into several connected design groups to create more intimate settings while maintaining an open plan. This breaks the large scale of the campus down to collaborative workspaces, perhaps into specific departments or one or more studios that may works together on common projects. UNIT 3 ENTERTAINMENT SPACE The unit will be like an industrial building – open in plan and democratic by design with large spans, high ceilings, and plenty of natural light. It allows all of the creative community to share and obtain thoughts in a leisure way. This industrial structure provides only the essential framework for space, melting into the background to allow for creativity and experimentation. Its compact form is energy efficient and economical to build.

STUDIO FOR CREATION

It should not just be an function block, but also an open framework for the evolution of creation, to be an incubator for all. It should share its program with the public and allow for informal interactions. It should simply empower people with tools and an open laboratory so that they can learn by creating. The units are organized according to potential active hours of use to maximize interactions in the context. Spaces with 24h active use are located at ground level and spaces with a 12h-8h active use are located on the upper levels. 13

This project is truly defined by the students especially the graduates and the way they use their studios. It is here that the work, process, method and results of the incubator become apparent. It is here that the conception and studying takes place. The studios are the true soul of the 'idea pod', and therefore I believe that they should be directly linked to the whole faculty's needs and preferences, thus creating a living and vibrant neighborhood that makes the units like the toolboxes.

2. INTERACTION

Bridges for NYC Urban Life Project: Summer Workshop Project Category: Individual Work Instructor: Songkai Liu Time: Sep. 2016 15

Inspired from the Mahhatan proposal made by Raymond Hood, this work is an infrastructure project that can better meet the emerging demand for holding activities like weekend market or exhibitions into daily life in New York City. It aims to focus on the way of living, way of how people can be really involved into life. Like a bridge, but more social functional, the new building serves as an intermediary and allows for a chronological description of events. It has flexible floor plans that can be passed through. Plenty of activities occurring at the same time. Depending on future requirements, further infrastructure can be added to the existing structure, besides, part of the building can be movable. Similar to a furnished space, the spatial sequence can be adapted and changed as required. 16

CONTEXT

Mapping part of Manhattan as the basic condition, the intersection's urban design qualities and document specific gathering places, land use, transit stations, types of surroundings and node of streets. And then classify the streets, choose the suited nodes in secondary streets as the sites of the infrastructure. The new bridge appears in the eventless grid of neighborhood, along the West Highway Site. The urban strategy is to reuse the space above the secondary street, visible from different directions by placing the bridges to penetrate the intersections of avenues and streets.

A DIALOG TO SOCIETY

Depending on the needs of the local community, it is a sports (elevated) platform, a vertical community garden, a space for the street art, city lounge, drive-in cinema, etc. Metaphorically, the new building can be considered the extension where you can experience the activities in urban life. The transparency of the facade invites citizens to come in, to walk into the building and discover new spaces, to stay for some minutes or maybe some hours, and to be part of something that was not there before. 19

FRAMEWORKS The design of the structural geometry of the 'bridge' which reacts to the different situational requirements. The structure aims to intensify the pedestrian experience and enhance the dialogue with the surrounding context.

22

AN INTERACTION INTO ONE TYPICAL SITE The site is situated at the intersection of Canal St, Watts St and Hudson St with typical Manhattan blocks. The project brings together different means of vertical communication combined with specific functions, thus connecting the ground with the elevated streets and bringing new attractors to the site. Manhattan is currently undergoing a significant land shortage; the upward infrastructure makes this shortage into a variable use. 23

The design start from studying how public space in multiple balance high density of the exsiting blocks.

Extend part of the bridges, then citizens can be connected to a 360 degree experience of the city.

Improve accessibility and their relations to surrounding edge and boundary.

The main node of the streets without significant founction but is a social central pivot. 24

Primary School for Remote Area in Yunnan Project: Competition Project Category: Individual Work Instructor: Wei Zhu Time: Aug. 2015 25

This building site is set near Dianchi Lake, Kunming. After consulting and analyzing its relationship with the surrounding environment, we propose a building that embraces life. Let the building return to nature and let people experience life. We use four hexagon blocks to form this school in the beehive style, to symbolize endless extensions. The underlying part is built on stilts, which can enrich students'imagination. Through its playful form and excellent use of materials, the building fits perfectly into the surroundings, thus harmoniously unifying humans, nature and the building to the maximum degree. 26

The design of Site Dwelling is located on the cliff of the bay, in the village of Salir do Porto, Portugal. Salir do Porto has a number of significant landmarks within a prominent landscape; it is a place of great cultural heritage, and the design aims to preserve these historical significance and tries to make conversation with history. And I try to make a dwelling dynamic, it is not a traditional dwelling for a daily life, it is a spiritual space for all the visitors who want to get a unique experience in a totally different way. 34

The bay of São Martinho do Porto is what remains of an extensive gulf that occupied a vast area with a major seaport in Alfeizerão. In the late sixteenth century, with the gradual silting of the bay, Alfeizerão port was unable to meet its functions and Salir do Porto became an important seaport for the region and a center of naval construction. The bay has three kilometers of beach and connects to the Atlantic Ocean through a 250 meter wide opening between the cliffs of Sant’Ana Chapel and the lighthouse. The remains of the old Chapel of Sant'Ana and the customs building are a valuable testimony of the historical significance of Salir do Porto. Thus, we plan to design a dwelling more than a dwelling, a building that can contain time and sceneries. And try to make the visitors to feel the dynamic views through different type of houses, althougn the functions a re separated, they are indivisible whole. The functions are separated in a sequence, and the forms of the houses are built by 4 types of observation: peep - observe - glimpse - gaze.
