The hardest issue to date [in mag-lingo terms] to put to bed. Not because of the 492 unopened emails or the 1,253 emails I have yet to truly respond to. No, it started a couple of weeks before Mother?s Day 2015. I learned my husband and I were expecting Baby No. 2. At that point, the baby was the size of a blueberry so that instantly became its nickname. Quiet about the news, I began to experience complications and was put into partial bed rest. Yet, when Mother?s Day rolled in, my husband and I were confident on our baby?s future and decided to announce our baby?s soon-to-be arrival for December 7th. Two days after our announcement we learned that Blueberry?s heart beat stopped. And, with the stopping of this heartbeat, I too stopped. It has gotten better, but there are days I freeze and ask: Why? Why so much pain? Why so much chaos? Why so much division? Why so much hardening of our hearts, toward each other, but most of all, toward God? Why do we forget that one day we will be face to face with Our Creator, and that one day we will have to give an account for our actions? What gives me a sense of hope in my deep tumultuous questions? I remind myself of the dream I had the same night after Blueberry was removed from my womb: I saw Jesus holding our baby, wrapped in the most beautiful white blanket, which draped perfectly toward the floor. My husband and I loved our baby's soul very much and find comfort in the Bible's promise to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. As we grieve, we know that Blueberry will never have fear or pain. Not subject to the faults and frailties of human parenting; instead, Blueberry will thrive in the love of the Perfect Father. I know He cares and holds her. I also know Blueberry will never know Earth?s peculiarities, but neither will she know the pain of isolation and loneliness. She is experiencing things far beyond our imagination in a place continually filled with joy and music. My arms long to hold her, my heart longs for her, and as King David said of his baby who died, she cannot come to me but we shall go to her (2 Samuel 12:23). Yet, my mind runs vigorously with this thought: Continual Joy vs. A Lake of Fire. Which will you choose?

Your V i si on To Your Team
Imagine you?re cruising down the road when all of a sudden a driving rain comes falling from the sky. As you urgently flip the switch to turn your windshield wipers on, you curse out loud at the realization that you still haven?t gotten them replaced. They are so old and worn that they?re not clearing off the rain landing on your windshield, and you can?t see anything in front of you. This same kind of situation can happen with your team if they are unclear about the vision of your team or company. The people you work with need clarity and purpose: clarity because it provides individuals with a sense of control that enables them to be more productive and successful in their goals and everyday tasks; purpose because people are more motivated when they know why they?re doing what they?re doing. Here?s how you can provide clarity and purpose for your team.

And just as important as the ?why? is the ?what,? which provides clarity about the outcome we expect to achieve through our actions. In larger corporations, purpose is outlined in the company mission statement, and clarity is provided in the vision statement. In small-to medium-size organizations, mission and vision statements may only exist in the leader?s head, if at all. Most moms in business are just too busy to stay organized. There, I said it. Most of the moms in business that I know are great at supporting their businesses, clients and families, and with such busy and overcrowded schedules, we just don?t seem to leave room for those niggly maintenance tasks. Clutter shows up? whether you like it or not? and is usually a result of postponed decisions, ineffective systems, and for most moms? exhaustion. However, it?s been proven over and over again that a clutter free environment creates a calmer environment and that makes most people more productive. If you?re life feels disorganized and overwhelmed, no matter what your excuse is, it usually can be loosely translated to some variant of: ?I?m doing nothing to keep it organized right now.? Don?t believe me? Well try this: What do you complain about? Your health, eating, your weight, your husband, not having free time? Whatever your complaint? state it out loud. Now, ask yourself: ?What am I doing currently about this complaint?? If your answer is nothing? ou might consider taking action to shift away from complaining and toward what you really want. Once your subconscious thoughts are verbalized, somehow they magically become more real. And, once your dissatisfaction is real, you can move toward accepting that it is true for you. OVERCOMING ANXIETY
Chispa Magazine
We live in a world that can provoke deep anxiety, even for the stout-hearted. The pace of life, difficulties in the economy, the unsettled global balance of power, and our spiritually antagonistic culture can wear us down. Over the years, I?ve not been prone to anxiety. In fact, as an entrepreneurial leader, I have tended to ignore caution and safety in order to take on the next great challenge with little regard for risk. I have; however, been prone to melancholy. Some describe my leadership style as choleric/ melancholy, which is a portrait of a driven, often creative person who occasionally gets down. I find myself asking, as David did, ?Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God? (Psalm 42:11).The Bible has much good advice about anxiety. Theologians and pastors have written books and preached great sermons on the subject. Counselors and doctors are often helpful on these issues. My advice can probably not compare to theirs, but I do want to share with you seven simple ideas that have helped me in my journey. Perhaps they will prove helpful to you as well. 1. Get Up. The simplest and best thing I?ve been able to do in the face of my deep anxiety is to simply get up. I find that lying in
bed, mulling over the emotions, fears, doubts, and questions just tends to make it worse. So, I have learned to get up? make a good cup of dark roast, take a shower, or just start reading the Bible. This resolve reminds me of God?s word to Joshua after Israel?s defeat at Ai. Joshua was on his face (normally a good posture), but he was asking the ?why? and ?what? questions, stewing in his misery and confusion. God said to Joshua, "Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face? Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves...? (Joshua 7:10, 13).Joshua needed to get up and do what needed to be done. When Elijah hit his spiritual and emotional valley after the ?high? of defeating Baal?s prophets on Mt. Carmel, God spoke to him. In one case, God tells him to get up and eat, rather than grovel in his self-pity (1 Kings 19:4-8). When he once again wallows in subjective gloom in the cave at Horeb, God again tells him to get up and go to the mouth of the cave to hear from the Lord. Still another time, the Lord tells him to get up and go back to anoint two kings and prepare Elisha as the next mighty prophet (1 Kings 19:10-18). 2. Get Perspect ive. I often say that ?discouragement is a temporary loss of
Your Strategy | Windy Artist 15
perspective.? As the previous story of Elijah reminds us, we need to get fresh perspective when we are anxious and in the dumps. Psalm 94:19 tells us, ?When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul? (NASB).Isaiah 26:3 tells us, ?You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You? (NKJV). An anxious heart is comforted by the objective truth of God?s word. Each morning the Lord is faithful to meet me in the pages of His word; to pull me out of the darkness of subjectivity into the hope that comes from His character and promises. 3. Get Cl ose. In Psalm 73 we see the priority of drawing close to God for a restoration of hope and peace when we are overwhelmed with negative emotion. The psalmist describes his internal angst that resulted from his focus on the apparent prosperity and ease of the godless. His heart was grieved and his mind vexed (v. 21). But, he writes, ?When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me? until I went into the sanctuary of God? (vv.16-17). Experiencing God?s presence made the difference. The Bible tells us, ?Draw near to God and He will draw near to you? (James 4:8). When we are intimate with the Father, peace, and
Chispa Magazine
well-being replace anxiety. Psalm 73 goes on to say it this way: ?Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon Earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever... But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works? (vv. 25-26, 28). We know that Philippians 4:6 and 7 affirm the power of drawing close to God in prayer: ?Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.? 4. Get Honest . Sometimes unconfessed sin is at the root of anxiety. David describes the effect of this in Psalm 32, when he writes, ?My bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer.? In Psalm 139:23-24 David offers the antidote to the anxiety of unresolved sin: ?Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting? (NIV). We can trade in anxiety for
the benefits that are consistent with the gift of everlasting life. 5. Get Engaged. Jesus understands our anxieties. He spoke wisdom to us in Luke 12:29-31 where He stated, "And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.? My translation: Don?t fret about the temporal things of life. Give your life away to kingdom purposes and you will experience a greater trust and peace. In Acts 20, Paul had ample reason to wake up 30 minutes before the morning alarm. He was on his way to Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit had already revealed to him that he would be arrested and suffer. But in Acts 20:35 he reveals his ability to live above anxiety when he says, ?I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And, remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ?It is more blessed to give than to receive.? Happiness is the experience of those who focus on giving their life away. Engaging our energies in serving others in significant ways pulls us out of the pit of anxiety in a powerful and positive fashion. 6. Get Input . We are blessed beyond measure
when we have family and friends who are willing to let us talk about these debilitating feelings. Their understanding and objectivity are a gift. Proverbs 12:25 says, ?An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up? (NIV). God commanded the prophet Isaiah to, ?Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. Say to those with anxious heart, ?Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, but He will save you?? (Isaiah 35:3-4). Friends help us remember that the ?movie? of our life is not over. We might be in a challenging ?frame? or ?scene?? but we are encouraged to remember that we know the Movie-maker. He wins and He is good. 7. Get Hel p. Sometimes we eventually need to find a wise counselor, pastor, or doctor to help us understand and address the unrelenting anxiety. Proverbs 11:14 says, ?Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.? The safety of caring, wise, and professional input is often necessary to give us the advice we need to deal with anxiety. So may the Lord give us the practical tools and the supernatural grace to ?Be still, let go, relax, cease striving? and know that He is God.? It sure beats anxiety. empt y nest . r enewed pur pose.
Chispa Magazine
Another barrage of graduations just concluded. As the celebrations subside, millions of families also now face a season of transition.A high school graduate prepares to head off to college while a college grad follows the dream of a career, often in another location. The reality of an empty nest eventually becomes the new season for every family. I still remember how difficult this was for me some years ago. Yet, the Lord was faithful to instruct, correct, and comfort me as I learned to cope with the new reality. Perhaps His counsel to my soul will be of help to some of you as well.
ThePur suit of a Pur posef ul Chil d The goal of every parent should be to raise children who understand their God-given purpose and pursue that ideal. It should come as no surprise when these purposes lead our children away from the ?nest? and into the mission field of God?s choosing. Psalm 127:4-5 says, ?Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.? Arrows are not made to stay warm, cozy, and controlled in the quiver. They are designed to hit a target outside the quiver. This is the
target of God?s calling. When children fulfill their purpose they defend and protect the honor of the family name by their character and accomplishments.
ThePassion of a Pur posef ul Par ent My momentary struggle of ?letting go? of my children brought me back to a fresh understanding of my purpose as a parent. The Lord was gracious to remind me of a familiar text during a Prayer Summit to affirm this purpose. Second Corinthians 4:7-12 says, ?But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed? always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you.? In speaking of his ministry, Paul reminded us that this life is but a mere earthen pot, or jar of clay. He spoke openly of the many trials that Christ-followers encounter in this brief life. He taught that, in spite of many
Your Strategy | SENIORita 19
challenges, the goal is the manifestation of the life of Jesus, even though life as we know it is dying away. Through it all, Paul?s life was fading, but the work of the Gospel was thriving through his disciples. For parents, this is a great reality check. We cannot preserve this life. It is fading, aging, and changing. Our passion is not to hold on to it but to pursue Christlikeness through the pain and adjustments. And, when it is all said and done, our life as parents is dying off? but our ministry through our children is growing, expanding, and flourishing, as it should. Just as John said of Jesus, ?He must increase, but I must decrease,? so parents must joyfully affirm, ?His life through my children must increase and the focus on my needs and memories must decrease.? This is a vital part of our role in fulfilling the great commission. Paul continues in verses 13-18, ?And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, ?I believed and therefore I spoke,?we also believe and therefore speak, knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will
Chispa Magazine
present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.? A parent?s very basic paraphrase might go like this: ?I know that someday the Lord will raise us all by His power and I will be presented with my children before Jesus. Until then, everything I do is for the sake of my children so that grace may spread through their lives, stimulating gratitude in many other hearts for God?s glory. So I am not discouraged. Even though the trappings of my life are fading, my inner growth in Christ keeps flourishing. This ?light affliction?of letting go is nothing
compared to the glory of God in the life of my children. Therefore, I will focus? not on the changing and fleeting circumstances of this present life? but on the unseen and eternal things God is doing in and through my children.?
ThePr incipl es of a Pur posef ul Family The very familiar teaching of Ephesians 6:1-4 tells us, ?Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ?Honor your father and mother,?which is the first commandment with promise: ?that it may be well with you and you may live long on the Earth.? And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.?When a family functions in authentic relationships with God?s purposes in view, two things occur: 1. Our children live a meaningful, useful life? blessed and protected by God. 2. Our children exhibit the instructions and principles of the Lord. There are so many things implied here, but it certainly includes the authority and claim of Christ on their lives.Christ said it clearly, ?For even the Son
of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many? (Mark 10:45). Our children do not exist to be served and preserved by a smothering parent. Rather, we must enable them to follow Christ and give their lives away in service of His purposes. When I was a young father, I remember hearing a line in a song by Steve and Annie Chapman that said, ?The day your children learn to walk they start to walk away from you.? At the time, this truth saddened my heart. Recently, this truth has been a struggle to my heart. But as I think of it, this truth is a joy to my heart as I affirm the incredible privilege of shooting three very precious arrows toward the target of God?s calling? for His glory. As they walk farther away from our home, they walk into their destiny? just as it should be. f e h C e Th Adrianne Calvo has all sorts of seasoning in her life from chef, author, television personality, and restauranteur at the graceful age of 35. Calvo was born in Chicago, Illinois to Cuban parents, Manuel and Magaly. Adrianne was the eldest of two daughters. The family wanted to escape Chicago?s harsh winters and decided to settle in Miami, where Calvo attended Braddock Senior High School. She enrolled at the Johnson & Wales University culinary school in 2002 and received first place in ten of the 40 competitions, as well as runner-up in all the rest. In 2003, Calvo won the ?Taste Down Under,? an Australian culinary competition. Her winning dish was served at a dinner for the United Nations and its ambassadors, making her the youngest person to cook for the United Nations. A year later, she won ?Taste Down Under? again and her dish was served to CNN correspondents and representatives from Gourmet, Food Network, and Bon Appetite. Not only do corporations get to indulge in Calvo?s treats, but so did the champion Florida Marlins. These accolades granted her the opportunity to cater the 2003 World Series
for the champion Florida Marlins. And just this year, Calvo received a bronze medal from competing in a National Pastry Competition held by Johnson & Wales University. She took no breaks from graduating top of her class in 2004 to working with the executive pastry chef, Patrick Lassaque, at the five-diamond Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami. Soon after being the youngest chef to work at the Mandarin Oriental, Calvo went further to sharpen her craft in Napa Valley, California. This experience, aided by the Chefs Thomas Keller and Cindy Pawlcyn, inspired her current restaurant, Chef Adrianne?s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar, in Miami. You can almost salivate at the point of the interview when Calvo intricately describes her recipe for Blue Crab [ if she were to participate in Iron Chef]. She gives four ways she would cook it: ?simple beer and Old Bay Steam with a lemon truffle horseradish Aioli for dipping,? or ?stuffed with an Oyster Rockefeller mix and served with hot sauce drawn butter,? or ?Spanish style (enchilado) simmered in a garlic, tomato, and roasted pepper sauce,? or even ?sautĂŠed in a wok, Szechuan style with lots of garlic and scallions.? With so much success and accomplishments, what does she do with the investments? Not only has Calvo established titles in the food industry, but also in the community. She

started the ?Make It Count? foundation in respects to losing her younger sister, Jennifer, to throat cancer. The foundation benefits children suffering from cancer and their families. Calvo also sponsors events for St. Jude?s Children?s Research Hospital, Susan G. Komen, and for the American Cancer Society. Calvo says that ?as humans, we tend to take the smallest, simplest things for granted . . . my sister [had] a traecheotomy not being able to have a drop of liquid through her mouth.? Her sister had to be tube fed into her stomach and having to witness such drastic necessities for an individual to survive, it impacted Calvo in a way that made her realize that ?cancer does not just affect the person [who] is sick, it affects all who are close, it sculpts us into someone who understands more deeply, hurts more often, appreciates more quickly, cries more easily, hopes more desperately, loves more openly, and lives more passionately.? This sagacity has such passion and feeling behind it that you cannot help but respect and thrive from her words. One of her mottos is to push people to make the most of themselves and to do her best to make it count; hence her established foundation (Makeitcountcharities.org). Every year during the holiday season, Calvo and her ?Make It Count? foundation visit St. Jude?s Hospital in Memphis to cook for the patients and their families. St. Jude?s

Every woman has her own personal standard of beauty. Whatever makes her feel beautiful is what she wears. From the beachy waves in her hair to the coral lipstick that makes her lips pop, or the shimmery, yellow blouse she bought last summer, she knows what looks best on her. Not only does a woman?s hair, clothing, and cosmetics enhance a natural beauty, but these assets also provide a self-expression. Imagine yourself as a United States servicewoman and your freedom to wear what you desire has been suddenly stripped away. How would you feel if your personal appearance had to be a specific standard at all times? Could you really handle someone else telling you what to wear? Or how to look? The duty of protecting and serving the country often comes with restrictive grooming guidelines. Each branch of the military (Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force) has its own set of grooming and personal appearance standards for servicewomen. From regulations on how to wear their hair to how much makeup can be applied, there is not much room for servicewomen to express themselves through their outward appearance. Uniformity and a tidy, well-groomed appearance are of the utmost importance in this line of work.
So, how do these women maintain feeling beautiful under these restrictive guidelines? How do they beautify themselves while still adhering to the grooming standards of the military? I Woke Up Like This Andrea Barkley, a petty officer and diesel engineer in the Navy, describes her brief morning beauty routine before going in for work. ?I roll out of bed, wash my face and that pretty much sums it up,? Barkley says. In contrast, Kassidy Nielson, lance corporal and small arms technician for the Marine Corps, has a more extensive grooming routine. She wakes up one hour before work to wash and condition her hair, making it easier to pull into a neat bun. She then applies hair gel and brushes it back for a sleek, polished look. She finishes by inconspicuously fastening her bun with an elastic hair tie. Buns are just one of the few hairstyles authorized for female Marines. ?I use a sock bun with two tan socks because my hair is longer and then complete the style with hairspray,? Nielson says. ?I put on a little mascara, blush, and brush my teeth. I put on clean socks, undergarments and full camis (utility uniform), and I am ready for the day.? Long Hair, Don?t Care According to the Navy?s handbook on the

grooming and personal appearance standards for female sailors, ?hair length, when in uniform, may touch, but not fall below a horizontal level with the lower edge of the back of the collar.? Such regulations make it difficult for women to style their hair in a way that is desirable to them, yet still meets the military?s grooming requirements. These standards also fail to provide a sufficient list of acceptable hairstyles for women with ethnic or naturally curly hair. Three-strand braids, two-strand twists, corn rows, rolls, and multiple braids are the only styles authorized. ?My hair is natural,? says Kelly Brantley, petty officer and culinary specialist for the Navy. ?It is not necessarily long enough for a ponytail, even if I straighten it. I want to have a natural style, but of course they have restrictions as far as how much bulk [your hair] can have.? ?I wear micro braids most of the time, but if I had a choice, I would wear big, fluffy curls!? Barkley says. ?I feel, as a woman, how I wear my hair and clothing helps me express who I am.? Less is More The four branches all have similar regulations when it comes to the application of cosmetics. Servicewomen are allowed to wear makeup as long as it is in good taste and
Chispa Magazine
blends with the natural skin tone. The Marine Corps even has written regulations on the colors of nail polish servicewomen can wear. (Yes, nail polish is considered a cosmetic!) If you think that is tough, try having implications on where and when you can wear your favorite nude lipstick from M.A.C. Cosmetics. ?Depending on the event, I wear concealer, foundation, eyeliner, mascara, blush, and eyeshadow? Barkley says. ?But I rarely wear makeup to work.? ?I wear mascara and blush in camis,? Nielson says. ?If I am in uniform, I will add brown or tan eye shadow and a small amount of perfume is always a must.? Cramping my St yl e Hair, skin and makeup products have the ability to enhance a woman?s appearance and provide a confidence boost. But when you are limited to the products you can use and how you apply them, it can become difficult to feel comfortable in your own skin. ?I feel that [grooming standards] do restrict my personal style,? Nielson says. ?I love my hair down and having it slicked back does not allow me to feel free. But I understand that it is uniform and everyone has to be the same.? ?It does make me feel less beautiful, but more comfortable at times,? she added. ?When I am
around male Marines, I know I feel more comfortable looking ugly, I guess, because I can accomplish a mission without being looked at in a sexual manner.?
Petty Officer Brantley was a tomboy growing up but now switches up her style from time to time. Some days she feels girly and others more laid back.
Unfortunately, this sentiment is all too common among women in the military. A 2014 Pentagon study reported a 50 percent increase in the number of reported sexual assault and harassment cases. This is a continuous struggle with the military as both men and women say they do not trust their superiors to handle such cases properly.
?I am the sweatpants, basketball shorts type of girl,? she says. ?But at the same time, I will still have my nails done,? she added, flashing her freshly manicured nails.
The Beaut y of Libert y Although uniformity and tidiness dominate the wardrobes of servicewomen, their outward appearance is not always under the watchful eye of the U.S. military. Grooming and personal appearance standards are only enforced ?while in any military uniform or while in civilian clothes on duty.? Servicewomen are at liberty to wear whatever makes them feel beautiful when away on leave. From flowing tresses, to long lashes and bright, bold lipsticks, anything is fair game. ?I love wearing blazers and midi shirts with skinny jeans and cowboy boots,? Barkley says. ?I tend to wear my hair in a scarf, in an afro, or in a big floppy bun on top of my head. I wear natural makeup; lots of nudes and browns.?
Def ining Beaut if ul Uniforms and grooming regulations aside, every woman has her own definition of beauty. And what makes one woman feel beautiful may not be true for the next. What is considered beautiful in a career field where femininity and glamor are suppressed? ?I smile a lot,? Nielson says. ?For me, the smile and laughter can be the most beautiful thing about any woman or person.? Talking to these women has proven the age-old saying holds true: ?beauty is in the eye of the beholder.? And it takes more than clothes, makeup, shiny hair, and flawless skin to keep a woman feeling beautiful. Ultimately, true beauty starts from within. ?No, these grooming standards do not keep you from being a beautiful person,? Barkley says. ?Beauty is beyond outer appearance.? You Ar e Not Alone: Living, Loving, and Thr iving w ith Adult ADHD According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) about 60 percent of children live with ADHD in the United States. This statistic is about four percent of the adult population, which translates to approximately eight million adults with nearly 20 percent of them go undiagnosed, according to the ADAA. Ultimately, this statistic means that roughly 1.6 million individuals may never know there is a cause for the associated symptoms of ADHD they could be experiencing. With such a high rate, there needs to be an increased awareness to help detect this kind of disorder, and if affected, how to live with it as an adult. ADHD vs. ADD. There is a lot of misinformation surrounding this disorder and its many forms. One commonly confused aspect is the difference between ADHD and ADD.
Chispa Magazine
ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is defined as common ?brain disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood,? with symptoms such as ?difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity),? according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Many health experts actually consider ADD (attention deficit disorder) an out-of-date term that refers to the same disorder as ADHD. Previously, ADD was used to diagnose someone with one of three types of ADHD, generally one who had the typical symptoms but without hyperactivity. Now, many are advocating to drop the idea of disorder types and focus on the disorder as a whole. Dispelling outdated information, and thus, eliminating unnecessary confusion, can facilitate easier detection of the disorder. Causes of ADHD While there is an extensive body of research on the matter, there is currently no definitive conclusion of the cause of ADHD. Some studies have shown that it may be hereditary, but experts are still attempting to find the exact causing gene. Other factors that may increase the likelihood of developing ADHD include ?a mother's use of cigarettes, alcohol, or other drugs during pregnancy,? as well as an individual?s exposure to lead, according to WebMD.
?Although many parents believe that foods with sugar and food additives make their children more hyperactive, these foods haven't been shown to cause ADHD,? experts at WebMD say. Adul t ADHD: How t o Cope Living with ADHD as a child can be hard enough. Smith adds. This goes for both parties, affected by ADHD or not. Once you?ve attempted to understand your partner?s perspective, Smith says the next step is to accept responsibility for your own faults or shortcomings within the partnership. ?Progress starts once you become aware of your own contributions to the problems you have as a couple. Researchers have made valuable discoveries in the area of ADHD and ways to treat the disorder. There are now various tactics one can utilize from medical to tactical, natural to spiritual. Medical treatment can be prescribed once a doctor has assessed and diagnosed the associated symptoms of an affected individual. Consistent communication with a designated health professional is key as proper dosages may change with fluctuating symptoms. Decoding Sunscreen
Sunscreen, UV, and SPF Def ined Chispa Magazine
By now, everyone knows they ought to sun screen and protect the skin from sunburn, sun damage, and skin cancers. But, with the multiple forms (creams, gels, lotions, powders, sprays, sticks, and oils) and numbers from 8 to 100, few people really know which one to choose, and why. Note: In case you were wondering, the term sunblock is now absent on sunscreen labels as it was misleading to imply that they would completely block UV rays from the skin. Now, you don?t have to be a detective to decode sunscreen; simply read on. UV means ultraviolet light and is classified as UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA rays are commonly called aging rays; UVB rays are known as burning rays. While UVC are called cancer-causing rays, UVA rays are largely responsible for causing skin cancers like melanoma, and squamous cell carcinomas, as well as photodermatitis. SPF is short for Sun Protection Factor, which measures the sunscreen?s strength. SPF indicates the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting sunburned and refers to UVB protection only. SPF does not mean you are protected against UVA rays, known as aging rays, which have the ability to penetrate deeply into the skin and break down vital skin components like collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.
SPF numbers may range from two to 100, although numbers over 50 are now being labeled 50+, due to the lack of supporting evidence that anything over that provides additional protection. The calculation of SPF compares the amount of time it would take to get a sunburn on unprotected skin versus skin protected by sunscreen. For example, using an SPF of 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer without getting burned, than if you weren?t wearing any sunscreen at all. Note: SPF 30 doesn?t mean you can stay in the sun twice as long as if you were wearing an SPF 15. Proceed with caution as this doesn?t account for the time of day, your geographic location, the UV Index (thickness of ozone layer, cloud cover, time of year, and elevation of your city), how much sunscreen you apply and whether you perspire or reapply, which can influence the likelihood of burning. Some sources indicate that an SPF of 2 absorbs 50 percent of UV rays and an SPF of 15 absorbs 93-94 percent of UVB rays; the minimum that should be worn. SPF 30 absorbs almost 97 percent of UV rays and is a must for everyone, particularly those with fair skin. Ready for la playa now? We are. C Text by Kendall Weatherman Photo by AXL

Q: Aside f rom wif e, mot her, businesswoman, aut hor, spokesperson, and even worked wit h President Obama as part of t he Trade Pol icy and Negot iat ion commit t ee? what can you not do? I cannot type. Q: What seems t o be your most easy rol e t o f il l versus your t oughest rol e t o f il l ? It might not be the easiest role, but my most rewarding role is being a mother and a wife. What comes easily to me now after working in this industry for over 25 years is helping women be the best versions of themselves. I feel very lucky that I get to work with incredibly inspiring women each and every day. Q: Why revamp your count ers? The new counters are an expression of my philosophy and aesthetic, and the perfect way for consumers to discover our range of color cosmetics, brushes, fragrance, skincare, and expert services. When visiting our counters, consumers have the freedom to design their own shopping experience. They can gather with others at the artistry tables to exchange tips and ideas; watch a video of seasonal inspirations and how-to?s; or choose from a menu of specialized services. Our counters provide the ultimate immersion into our brand culture.
Q: What is your st rat egy regarding product l aunches and cont inuous branding? Over the years, I?ve learned that innovation is key, so I?m always looking for something new & exciting. It?s important for me to translate my inspirations? which I usually get from traveling and meeting women all over the world? into innovative and functional products. Lately, my team and I have been focusing on makeup and skincare hybrids. Once I have an idea, I work very closely with my incredible product development team, as well as my artistry team to develop products and collections. I?m very involved in the process. Q: What l egacy do you want t o be known f or? My hope is to help women everywhere understand that being who you are is the secret to lasting beauty? and that all of us can be both pretty and powerful. I would like to be remembered for my work in female empowerment, helping women to become their most confident selves. Life is too short to be unhappy, focus on what you love about yourself and celebrate your uniqueness. Q: What one l esson woul d you l ike your sons t o l earn f rom you, but most of al l , put int o pract ice? To be who you are and love who you are. Staying true to oneself will give the confidence you need to succeed in life. And always be nice to people; you never know

what someone is going through and when you might cross paths again. Q: What vit al l esson have you l earned f rom your husband and sons, and perhaps you empl oy wit hin your business? My husband and three sons are my secret to staying Zen. They?ve helped me find a balance between work and home, constantly teach me patience and love, and have helped me prioritize what?s important. Q: How do you put int o act ion a work/ l if e bal ance whil e being an act ive mom and a very act ive businesswoman? I?m in our SoHo office at least twice a week and some days I?ll spend all day in meetings with my teams including Creative, Marketing, Public Relations, and Product Development. Other days, I?ll have early morning radio followed by morning TV followed by an in-store appearance at one of the local department store Bobbi Brown counters. Most of my days involve me doing something for PR. I do; however, try to keep most of my evenings free so that I can spend time with my family. Weekends are also dedicated to them. I unplug and focus on family time. Q: What are your t ips f or new moms who own a business or are about t o l aunch a new business? I try to keep everything in my life? whether it?s work or home? as simple as
possible. At this stage in my career and life I?ve learned to find time to do it all? run a company, raise three kids, and lead a happy marriage. However, finding balance does not come without sacrifice; you almost always need to sacrifice something and I?ve learned over the years to make peace with that. If you know what?s most important to you, you will always make the right decisions. My family is the most important thing to me and I fit everything else around them. Q: As women we l ove t he cul inary art s and enjoy t he goodness f ound in f l avor? what do you l ike t o cook at home versus eat at rest aurant s? I love eating really clean, so a piece of grilled fish with lemon, steamed veggies, and a baked sweet potato is my go-to meal at-home. When I?m out at a restaurant, I always order everything with no salt, no oil and no butter, or I get those items on the side to control the portions. It?s important to me to eat foods that are fresh and organic; I feel my best when I eat this way. That is why I prefer to cook my own meals at home. I use my Vitamix a lot to make healthy smoothies or soups. What you put inside you really does show on the outside. Q: Time t o vacat ion: When pl anning your vacat ion, what do you l ook f or? for all of the above depending on the occasion and time of year. One of my most memorable trips was when my family and I (15 of us!) went on a safari last summer. We stopped in Cape Town, which is stunning and we met so many interesting people. Then we were off to our safari through South Africa and Botswana. The animals are literally right in front of you and they seem to be looking into your eyes? it?s unbelievable. Everything was amazing, not to mention, inspiring? the beaches, mountains, and rich colors? all of it. Otherwise, I love spending time in Telluride, Colorado, Bay Head, New Jersey, and the Bahamas with my husband and three sons. It?s a time when the whole family can relax and be together. I?m happiest when I?m with my family, and I usually prefer a beach vacation where I can really decompress and reenergize. Q: In regards t o your phil ant hropy work, if you coul d onl y choose one t o work wit h f rom t his point f ort h, which woul d t hat be and why? To me teaching and learning is the key to life. I have personally always supported the teachers and schools in both my hometown and New York City. Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has adopted schools for the past ten years. As a corporation, we have made over a cosmetology classroom, trained the cosmetology teachers in our methods, we?ve
given students internships and new computers, we?ve stocked an entire library with books and we even gave a much needed facelift to a school?s nursery by painting it and donating cribs, toys, diapers, and other supplies. Students inspired me so one thing is for certain, I will always work with schools or teachers in some shape or form. Q: Have you reached your l if e?s purpose? I think there?s a certain amount of peace that comes with getting older. After so many years of aspiring to unattainable ideas, I have finally learned to let it go and relax. ?Letting go? doesn?t mean that I?ve stopped caring about my face, my hair, or my body. I still care, but I?m more realistic about my expectations of myself. I?m finally comfortable in my skin? and it is such a relief. Plus, I am happy, I?m healthy and have a loving husband and family plus a rewarding job that I love? what else can I ask for? One of my plans for the future is to continue my work in female empowerment and inspiring women to be their most confident selves. The little padlock logo encloses far more than just a name. With its rounded lines and handcrafted look, upon its inception, it was conceived to symbolize the protection of exclusive pieces with a unique design. UNOde50 was created at the end of the 90s by a team of designers who intended on creating a jewelry style that would break away from everything that came before it. Tradition and modernity merged into shape, with an ever-present spirit of craftsmanship, the brand reflects exclusiveness through design and quality. Interesting, UNOde50 started out with the idea of creating 50 units of each design, hence its name. Over time, its resounding success led the brand to increase production, although it kept its name as a reminder that right from day one, quality and exclusiveness have been prioritized in each piece. They st and f or it s unique and edgy designs. The genuine UNOde50 seal exudes originality in each and every one of its creations. If there is one thing all these pieces share, it is daring, attention to detail, and an exclusive DNA that renders the brand both unique and different. Craf t smanship is one of t he f undament al pil l ars. The production of each design involves a unique process in the current-day jewelry world. From the initial sketch to the finished piece, experts who based in their workshops, headquartered in Madrid, Spain,

are responsible for the entire process. The common trait across all creations is the use of a metal alloy that brings the brand?s exclusive designs to life, giving them that special handcrafted texture. Once cast, the pieces undergo 15 micron silver and three micron gold plating, as well as a thorough quality-control process. UNOde50 t urns t o gol d. Its creative universe is reasserted each year with the launch of two collections that surprise its clients. The gold and bags lines, the brand?s latest novelties, are further proof of the never-ending innovative spirit of Unode50s design team. Entirely handcrafted, the Gold Collection pieces are presented with a delicate18 karat gold plating, sometimes combined with the brand?s characteristic leather. The Collection includes bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings. A series of new models coexist for the occasion fused [with others which have already become true icons of the brand], and are now reissued in a gold version. C Text by Romina Nabhen

Ref l ect ing t he Sun Here comes the sun! The color of the season comes in all shapes and silhouettes with the idea of sport-meets-sophistication at the forefront. As the athleisure look continues to trend, the palette is intensified with bold tangerine, coral, and nude. Expect to see colorblocking, collage, layering, a mix of prints, and even a touch of shine and shades of gold. Sea Advent ures Green, turquoise, and blue are making a serious splash this season. But unlike seasons past, these two hues are now intensified with iridescence and shimmer. Wave prints surface on blouses, skirts, and sheaths; fluorescent shades breathe new life into bombers and shorts; and neoprene and mesh details offer a contemporary surf vibe. Down t o Eart h Fun Earth tones combine with folkloric brights rendered in Spanish-inspired embroideries on blouses and maxi dresses. Take note of mixed tribal patterns, batik and animal-inspired prints for updated safari looks, along with rough edges, crochet and rustic materials. wsummer oman read Susan Axelrod and the word pioneer go together like cake and frosting. As the Chairwoman and Founder of Love & QuichesGourmet out of Freeport, NY, Axelrod?s journey has paved the way for future women entrepreneurs. Many businesses begin with a simple idea. For Axelrod, it was an accidental idea that emerged in her kitchen in 1973.She started her business with no formal training and at a time when most women remained in the home. Armed with only her passion for food, her energy and tenacity, Axelrod was able to take her small business, worldwide. Forty-two years later, these desserts and quichesare found in restaurants and retailers around the globe. Chispa Magazine
Through the Lens |Mark Seliger 103
She continues to chronicle her experiences in her blog, Susan?s Sweet Talk and recently published her new book, With Love and Quiches: A Long Island Housewife?s Surprising Journey From Kitchen to Boardroom. In her book, Axelrod shares how she grew LoveandQuichesGourmet to the successful business it is today. From business tips, anecdotes and recipes, readers will get an insider's view of exactly what it took for this Long Island housewife to become a well-respected and admired business leader. And to give you a sneak-peak into Axelrod?s strategies, when we asked her what legacy does she want to leave behind for your family and those who read her book, she smiles and says, ?Writing it took tremendous discipline, commitment, and organization; skills I had developed during my forty year career. There will always be obstacles thrown in our way; some self-inflicted, some beyond our control. Our company has survived and grown through recessions, commodity spikes, brutal competition, 9/ 11, The Great Recession, and, in some measure, Hurricane Sandy because our facility is directly on a channel.? ?My legacy is to pass on to my family and organization the knowledge that there is never a clear path straight to the top. The road always twists and turns; they must prepare for those setbacks and prepare strategies to deal with them. That is the best road to success,? she continues. ?On a personal basis: for me, running the business is a learned skill, leadership is a
learned skill. I said: I can do this thing. Then I willed myself to be ambitious, to develop an unlimited capacity for work, to recognize opportunity, to take measured risks, to learn from mistakes, to compromise, to prepare for setbacks, not to resist change, to say ?no,? to step back (not so easy), and to make a good decision and, once made, to never look back. I hope to pass on these crucial leadership skills to those who follow me. When you own your own business, there is not much Life-Work balance. It simply does not exist, and I accepted that. At the end of the day, I have done what I want to do, and love to do. And a bit of serendipity never hurts; being in the right place at the right time." C
