4 A WOODBLOCK PRINT BY HIROSHIGE (1797 - 1858). An oban yoko-e, ‘Shono’, the sub-title, Haku-u (Sudden Summer Shower) from Hoeido’s Tokaido series, ‘The Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido Road’, depicting travellers being caught by a sudden shower, and scurrying off a hill slope, signed Hiroshige ga. £3,500 – 4,500 錦絵 安藤広重 庄野 東海道五十三次 This is the most famous of all Hiroshige’s prints, not only for its innovative composition but also for the way it captures the essential sentiments of the Japanese people. Unlike the landscape prints by Hokusai, in which nature dominates over humans, human figures hold a tangible balance with the landscape in Hiroshige’s prints, evoking memories of the viewer, in a way no other Japanese artist has yet achieved. In this print, Hiroshige used a dynamic composition of a diagonal lines with the hill cutting through the pouring rain also emerging at an angle from the dark sky. The contrast of the triangle-shaped shadows of moving trees and thatched roofs adds a rhythmic touch to the human figures running in opposite directions from each other. Hiroshige designed fifty-five prints based on his sketches along the Tokaido highway on the trip to Kyoto from Edo in 1832. However his prints are not a realistic depiction of the post stations, but the creation of his own views of human life enhanced by the natural phenomena such as rain, snow and fog.

During his life time, Hayashi’s work was considered controversial as it was opposed to the opinion of the government. He criticised the shogunate’s sakoku (national isolation) policy and pointed to a need for Japan’s coastal defence against the Russian and other countries in his self-printed book ‘Kaikoku Heiden’. This led to his books being seized and the printing blocks were destroyed, however, the work circulated secretly in manuscript form. Sangoku tsuran zusetus is the first book to define the Japanese borders with the neighbouring countries, Ezo (Hokkaido), Ryukyu (Okinawa) and Chosen (Korea), and was accompanied by five maps. A copy of this book was eventually brought to Europe by Issac Titsingh, a senior official of the Dutch East India Company, in 1796 and later translated into French. Hayashi died under the house arrest two years after his books were banned.
