PORTRAIT MINIATURES 1 CHRISTIAN RICHTER (SWEDISH 1678-1732) Portrait miniature of Queen Mary II (1662-94) wearing robes of state, pearl necklace and drop-pearl earrings, her hair worn curled and decorated with pearls Watercolour on vellum Oval, 2½in. (63mm) high Gilt-metal frame with pierced spiral surmount, glazed with bevelled glass Footnote: This portrait miniature of Mary II derives from a full-length State Portrait by Godfrey Kneller, commissioned by William III and Mary II in 1690, in the Royal Collection [RCIN 405674]. Kneller’s portrait of the queen was widely copied and circulated, and a head and shoulders variant was engraved by both Peter Vanderbank and John Smith in the mid-1690s. The popularity of Mary’s image continued long after her death with mezzotints being produced by John Faber Junior in the 1730s [Royal Collection RCIN 603241]. The Swedish artist Christian Richter was only sixteen years old at the time of Mary II’s premature death and did not arrive in England until 1704. Richter, however, known for his replica portraits in miniature after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Samuel Cooper and Sir Anthony van Dyck, undoubtedly painted this miniature posthumously, several years after Mary’s death in 1694.2 Singular portrait miniatures of Mary without her husband William are rare, but this may have been painted for a Stuart supporter in the same vein as extant double portraits which survive in the Royal Collection, as well as an example in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. £1,200-£1,800

2 ENGLISH SCHOOL (circa 1705) Portrait miniature of Charles Hinton, wearing pink coat with draped blue sash and white jabot, powdered wig, landscape background, c. 1705 Oil on copper Original turned wood frame, the backing board inscribed ‘Counsellor Charles Hinton first husband of Anne Jacson afterwards Mrs Gisborne of Staveley’, the whole in sharkskin case Oval, 31⁄10in (80mm) high Provenance: Bonhams, 9 April 2002, lot 3; European Private Collection Footnote: Charles Hinton married Anne Jacson in 1709 in St Werburgh’s in Derby. He died just a year later in Staffordshire without any children. In his will he bequeathed a house in St James’ to his wife. This portrait is probably by an English hand influenced by the large oil portraits of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), the leading portraitist of the period. Interestingly, the artist has also recorded the dramatic landscape that surrounds Staveley, part of the Lake District in Cumbria. £600-£800

3 FRENCH SCHOOL (1637) Portrait miniature of a Nobleman, called Charles de Schomberg (1601-1656), Duke d’Halluin (Hallwin) and Governor of Languedoc, wearing armour with gold and blue edged white sash and wide lace collar, his hair worn long Watercolour on vellum Later gilt-metal frame, the leather reverse inscribed (in a later hand) with sitter’s name and dated 1637 Oval, 13⁄4in (45mm) high Provenance: Private European Collection Footnote: Charles Schomberg was German-born but rose to high status, arriving in France under Charles IX, growing up at court as enfant d’honneur of Louis XVIII. His father, Henri de Schomberg, also a Marshal of France, had died just after commanding the royal army which defeated Montmorency. By all accounts, Charles was gallant, educated and popular, particularly with the Languedocians (he even learned their language and was able to communicate with the locals). This portrait appears to have been painted in 1637, when Charles successfully defeated the Spanish force which threatened to invade Languedoc from Catalonia (the Battle of Leucate). Having successfully defened this territory, hopes were high that Charles might force the Spanish army to retreat further by invading Roussillon, but he refused to participate, correctly assuming that this would be at his own expense. Charles went on to further positions of civilian and military authority, becoming the Governor of Metz and of the Trois-Évêchês between 1644 and his death in 1656. He was also Colonel-general of the Cent-Suisses et Grisons between 1647-56. Charles’s first wife was Anne, Duchess d’Halluin, from whom he received his title. Anne was unusual in divorcing her 3 husband Henry de Nogaret de La Valette (who also kept his title after the end of the marriage). Anne died in 1641 and in 1646 Charles remarried with Marie de Hautefort (1616-1691), an important figure at court being both lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Austria and the former favourite of King Louis XIII. The couple moved to the Citadel of Metz in 1652. The careful painting of this seventeenth century portrait recalls the technique of Alexander Cooper (1609-1660), brother of Samuel Cooper and most likely the pupil of Peter Oliver. Alexander appears to have worked largely abroad, particularly in Sweden and Denmark and used clear, bright colours in a studied manner. £300-£500

4 CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ZINCKE (1683-1767) A portrait miniature of a Lady, wearing a white dress and blue cape, c.1720 Enamel on copper Gold frame with reeded edge Oval, 1¾in. (45mm) high Provenance: Bonhams London, 22 February 1995, lot 63; Bonhams, London, 27 November 2005, lot 27; European Private Collection Footnote: This portrait of a young woman shows Zincke working in his favoured colours of blue and white; a fashionable combination in the eighteenth century. The darker blue flaunted Zincke’s skill in his painting of drapery, while the white colour alluded to the sitter’s youthfulness and also a type of chemise more often worn in private than in public. The informality of this dress (seen here also in the lifted edge of the sitter’s cloak) indicates the status of the portrait enamel as a personal as opposed to a public portrait type. Christian Friedrich Zincke was the most successful enamel painter in England in the eighteenth century. A pupil of William Boit, himself the effective successor to Jean Petitot, who introduced the practice in England, Zincke found success so easy that by 1741 he was able to charge the enormous sum of thirty guineas for a miniature. Unlike most enamellists, Zincke painted sitters from life instead on relying on copying from large oil portraits. 4

Due to deteriorating eyesight, Zincke’s career ended prematurely in the 1740s, although by then he had established himself as one of the most prolific and successful portrait enamellists of the eighteenth century. His work is held in a number of major national collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, the Royal Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum. £400-£500

5 ABRAHAM SEAMAN (fl. c. 1724-1753) Portrait miniature enamel of a Gentleman, wearing a pinkish-red coat and green embroidered waistcoat, his hair worn powdered and en queue, c.1740 Enamel on metal Gilded metal and gold frame with reeded edge Oval, 17⁄8in (48mm) high Provenance: European Private Collection

5

Footnote: Abraham Seaman was part of a family of artists - including Noah (probably his brother), Isaac and Enoch. Little is known about the Seaman family other than that they painted portraits in a variety of media in England during the first half of the eighteenth century. Both Abraham and Noah’s enamel portraits are to be found in Dutch collections, including the Dutch Royal Collection, so it is possible that they were peripatetic artists. Works by the Seaman brothers are technically close to Christian Friedrich Zincke’s enamelled portraits - the most prolific and well-known enameller in England during this time. It is possible that they were apprenticed to him or assisted in his studio. The unknown gentleman portrayed here is typical of Abraham Seaman’s patrons. Although Zincke regularly painted nobility and, on occasion, royalty, the popularity of enamels by 1740 had widened the patronage out to the wealthy merchant class. Although enamelling was technically challenging its fashionable status encouraged miniaturists to experiment in the medium. This produced mixed results and, on the whole, only the specialist artists were able to set up successful practices. £400-£600

G Zambelli / Salonica 1st January/ 1891’ (translation) Pen and brown ink 15 x 9.7cm (6 x 33⁄4in) Unframed Footnote: The present sketch was drawn in the same year as the painting by G Zambelli, ‘The Harbour Constantinople’ signed and dated G. Zambelli / Constantinopoli 1891, sold Sotheby’s, The Orientalist Sale, 19 April 2016, £197,000. Zambelli captures all the details of the view with the skyline of Constantinople depicting the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Beyazit Tower, the New Mosque and the Suleymaniye Mosque. Unlike furniture made by the British Arts and Crafts movement, from which it emerged in stylistic respects, most Art Nouveau furniture was produced in factories by normal manufacturing techniques, which led to tensions with Arts and Crafts figures in England, who criticised continental Art Nouveau furniture for not being ‘honestly’ constructed. It also tended to be expensive, as a fine finish, usually polished or varnished, was regarded as essential, and continental designs were usually very complex, with curving shapes that were expensive to make. It by no means entirely replaced other styles of furniture, which continued to be popular, with Art Nouveau styles largely restricted to an expensive “art furniture” category. The style was named for Siegfried Bing’s Maison de l’Art Nouveau gallery and shop in Paris, which opened in 1895, and in France and Belgium furniture designers took up the style with more enthusiasm than those of most countries. £300-£500

(Exh. 1831) Another smaller version painted for the engraving is in the Wallace Collection, London. The subject is probably taken from Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’, IV, iii. Edward V (1470-83) succeeded to the throne on the death of his father Edward IV. He was deposed by his uncle, the Duke of Gloucester (who became Richard III) on 22 June 1483. Shortly afterwards, he and his younger brother, Richard, Duke of York (1472-83), were murdered in the Tower of London. In Shakespeare’s play the murder of the brothers is related by Sir James Tyrrel, Richard III’s henchman, rather than shown on stage. Nevertheless, the painting, with its stagelike setting and melodramatic subject, is highly theatrical £400-£600

From the Private Collection of Aaron Rapoport 1878-1963 by descent Aaron Rapoport was born in Moscow on May 18th 1878. He was the eldest son of the Rapoports: two cousins from a family of wealthy white Russian Jews living in Moscow: Berka Rapoport (born in 1847) and Perle married on April 4th 1874 and had 5 children. Towards the end of the 19th century, they fled Russia and sought refuge in France where they settled. Ary became naturalised French in December 1904. He was a diamond merchant and dealt in natural pearls in the office of “Rapoport Jerwood Perles et pierres fines” in the rue Drouot, in the 9th arrondissement in Paris. He lived in Rue Lauriston in the 16th arrondissement in Paris. They mixed with various artists, especially Russian Jews like themselves and Ary started collecting works by local painters and sculptors as well as English prints and etchings. He was a highly respected figure in the artistic community and admired for his connoisseurship. He died in Paris in December 1963.

171 ARNOLD BORISOVICH LAKHOVSKY (RUSSIAN 1880-1937) Moonlit scene of Pskov on the Velikaya River Signed l.l. and inscribed in Cyrillic script l.r. Oil on board 49.5 x 69cm (191⁄2 x 27in) Footnote: Lakhovsky was born in Chernobyl on 18th January 1880; of Russian/Jewish descent, he initially trained at the Academy of Art in Odessa before furthering his studies in Munich and latterly St. Petersburg where he came under the influence of the renowned Russian Realist painter Ilya Repin (1844-1930). He settled in St. Petersburg for a period of time drawing inspiration from the city itself as well as its environs; in particular making numerous trips to the ancient and picturesque town of Pskov on the Velikaya River. For a brief period In 1908 Lakhovsky lectured at the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem, the first instance of a life-long dedication to the advancement of Jewish art and artists. He was a founder member of the Jewish Arts Encouragement Society in 1915 and would often donate proceeds from the sale of his own work to fund the society. In 1915, having returned to Russia he joined ‘The Wanderers Society’ of artists; also referred to as ‘The Itinerants’, the group had been founded in 1870 when fourteen painters left the Imperial Academy of Art in St Petersburg in protest against the restrictive attitudes prevalent at the time. The resulting co-operative of Realist painters dismissed the notion of ‘High’ and ‘Low’ art and resolved to bring art to the people. Entirely self-supporting, the society staged no less than forty-eight exhibitions between 1871 and 1923 in cities such as Kiev, Riga, Oryol, Kharkov and Odessa. In 1925, following an invitation from the Luxembourg Museum, Lakhovsky travelled to Paris where he lived and worked until 1933. He then settled in New York, where he received numerous portrait commissions as well as teaching at the Boston Museum Art School. His early work captures the raw beauty of life in rural Russia, acutely observing the harsh majesty of the landscape in winter, while his portraits are typified by a sensitivity and honesty reminiscent of Laura Knight’s portraiture. Lakhovsky died in 1937 from a bout of pneumonia followed by Leukemia and is buried in Long Island. Provenance: Private Collection UK, acquired by the present owner’s grandfather Aaron Rapoport directly from the artist in Russia, and thence by descent. £2,000-£3,000

Oil on board 63 x 47.5cm (243⁄4 x 183⁄4in) Provenance: Private Collection UK, acquired directly from the artist in Paris by Aaron Rapoport and thence by descent. Footnote: Painter and printmaker Albert Abramovitz was born in Riga, Latvia and studied art at the Imperial Art School in Odessa and, in Paris, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Abramovitz became a member of the Paris Salon in 1911 and of its jury in 1913; he also became a member of the Societaire du Salon d’Automne and won widespread recognition and acclaim, including the Grand Prize at the 1911 Universal Exposition in Rome and Turin. In 1916, Abramovitz emigrated to the United States, and held his first oneman show at the Civic Club in Manhattan in 1921. He lived briefly in Los Angeles in the late 1920s, but ultimately settled in Brooklyn, New York. £1,000-£1,500

173 NAUM ARONSON (RUSSIAN 1872-1843) Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy Charcoal on buff paper Signed, N. Aronson’ l.r. 40 x 31.5cm (151⁄2 x 121⁄4in) Provenance: Private Collection UK. acquired by the present owner’s grandfather Aaron Rapoport directly from the artist in Paris, and thence by descent. Footnote: In August 1901, Aronson was commissioned to do a sculpture of Tolstoy. He travelled to the village of Yasnay Polyana, Russia, in order to meet Tolstoy and his family. Aronson said: “I had great hopes and ambitions but would never have aspired to sculpt the gods-for that is what Tolstoy was for me. Even to approach him seemed blasphemous.” Aronson returned to Paris with a clay model and over sixty sketches of Tolstoy. “It was as he sat in this chair in the semi-darkness, that I used every opportunity to jot down his expressions – of weariness, pensiveness, and sometimes dissatisfaction.” (Glants, p. 21). He refined the sculpture of Tolstoy in 1901-1902, Aronson casted the bust in bronze at the Alexis Rudier Fondeur. The work was exhibited at the Fine Arts Academy in St Petersburg in 1902 to immense acclaim; the critics in agreement said that it truly captured Tolstoy. “He is no longer with us, but his great spirit and his immortal thought remain. This is what I wanted to convey – the Mont Blanc of the Russian land…The drawing of Tolstoy sitting in his armchair – that is how I saw him; Plunged in thought as he listened to the music.” (Glants, p. 21) The present drawing relates closely to the drawing of Tolstoy by Naum Aronson that was sold at Shapiro Auctions: 28th April, 2012, Lot 76. It conveys the distinctive characteristics of the deep set eyes lost in thought but drawn from a different angle that indicates that this was one of the series of over sixty studies he made from life when he visited Tolstoy in 1901. He used these studies to produce the clay model which was then cast in bronze.
