PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF BERNARD MYERS Trained as a gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, Bernard Myers studied at St Martin’s School of Art (1947-49) and Camberwell (1949-51) before entering the Royal College of Art as a student of painting in 1951. Fellow students included John Bratby and Jack Smith, .ZIVS )]MZJIKP IVL 4MWV 3W[[W‫ ٺ‬ After graduating ARCA in 1954, Myers taught part-time at Camberwell, Hammersmith and Ealing art schools, and became a senior lecturer in drawing at the Architectural Association School where he was talentspotted to return to the RCA. Myers balanced his time teaching Industrial Design - at the Royal College, Brunel University and in collaboration with Imperial College, at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi - with his undimmed compulsion to paint, a passion that remained with him throughout his life. On the combination of the two Myers commented: »;WUM IZ\Q[\[ ÅVL \PI\ \MIKPQVO QV\MZNMZM[ _Q\P \PMQZ _WZS 1 ÅVL Q\ KTIZQÅM[ my work.’ At the RCA James Dyson treasured Myers’ good advice, remembering him as ‘cheerful, irrepressible [and] rather dapper… with a tweed suit and bowtie..’. For Myers, teaching left him free to practise his own art exactly as he wished, exploring a wide variety of media. He had several one-man [PW_[ QV \PM ?M[\ -VL \PM ÅZ[\ I\ \PM 6M_ )Z\ +MV\ZM QV ! !# PQ[ TI[\ in 1991. In 1974 he moved into one of the studios at St Peter’s Wharf, purpose built by Julian Trevelyan, next to Hammersmith Terrace. He also wrote: two books on Goya, others on the history of sculpture and ‘How to Look at Art’, and co-edited The Macmillan Encyclopedia of Art’ (1979). A fuller account of Myers’ life written by Christopher Frayling appeared in The Independent, 16 November 2007.

Published in 1965 and subtitled ‘The Lively World of British Art’, Private View included two hundred and sixty-seven black-and-white and one hundred and one colour photographs featuring no less than eighty British Artists. The book was an exceptional project created by Snowdon, who worked on it together with the art critic John Russell and the director of the Whitechapel Gallery Bryan Robertson. At a time of emerging talent when Britain was a focus of increasing international attention, Snowdon captured the London-based artists with a remarkable freshness and directness and chose to present them not as stars, but as working professionals. Here Anthony Blunt is searching through slides at the Courtauld Institute and sunlight falls on a transparency of a favourite painting by Picasso. Blunt was Keeper of the Queen’s Pictures and Director of the Courtauld Institute, later exposed as a Soviet Spy. (See F. von Hofmannsthal (ed.), p. 264.) 48

Upon graduating the Royal College of Art in 1969, O’Rorke rented a large studio in St Katherine’s Docks, a huge warehouse near the Tower of London, which Bridget Riley had taken over on short lease. It was the first artist-run studio in London providing spaces for over hundred artists. ‘After about eighteen months we had to move and some of us went to an old school in Hackney but it was a long way from where I was living and I subsequently found a large warehouse space in Chelsea which was much nearer my house. I spent three years working there and continued with the large abstract paintings but also did a lot of smaller collages, one of which was Sweet Dreams which I painted in about 1972. At the time I was still interested in exploring the contrast between figurative imagery and paint used just as paint and the transition between these two conventions.’ We are grateful to the artist for the assistance in cataloguing this lot. £800-1,200

But I found this disparate imagery tended to dictate the forms and colours, so I decided to remove any figurative references and concentrate on trying to make completely abstract paintings. In the early seventies a number of artists calling themselves Post-painterly abstractionists or colour field painters emerged like John Hoyland, John Golding and Jules Olitski, and for a while the influence of their work fed into mine.
