AS AN EDGE ENVIRONMENT, THE OVERLAP OF DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES OF USERS AND DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT CONDITIONS MAKE FOR ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF COMPLEXITY AND ENERGY. IN THE NON-HUMAN REALM, WATERFRONTS ARE THE INTERFACE OF THE AQUATIC AND THE TERRESTRIAL, THE SITE OF COMPLEX INTERTIDAL COMMUNITIES, THE POINT OF RELEASE FOR WAVE ACTION, AND THE VEHICLE FOR MANY DISPERSAL PATTERNS. AS RELATED TO HUMAN HISTORY AND USE, WATERFRONTS HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF CHANGING TYPES AND LEVELS OF USES, AND ARE NOW COMING BACK INTO POTENTIALLY THRIVING AND LAYERED PUBLIC USE. ONCE THE SITE OF FIRST SETTLEMENTS AND EXPLORATION, THEY HAVE LONG SERVED AS TRANSPORTATION CORRIDORS AND PORTS, HUBS OF TRADE, TRAVEL CENTERS, RECREATION VENUES, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE. WATERFRONTS HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY USED BY HUMANS FOR THEIR UTILITY IN TRAVEL, TRADE, RECREATION, AND GENERAL ENJOYMENT, AND HAVE ALSO SUFFERED CYCLES OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT FROM THESE VERY USE PATTERNS. CITIES SEEK A WATERFRONT THAT IS A PLACE OF PUBLIC ENJOYMENT. THEY WANT A WATERFRONT WHERE THERE IS AMPLE VISUAL AND PHYSICAL PUBLIC ACCESS – ALL DAY, ALL YEAR - TO BOTH THE WATER AND THE LAND. CITIES ALSO WANT A WATERFRONT THAT SERVES MORE THAN ONE PURPOSE: THEY WANT IT TO BE A PLACE TO WORK AND TO LIVE, AS WELL AS A PLACE TO PLAY. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY WANT A PLACE THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN ALL OF ITS ASPECTS - ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL. INTENT AND SCOPE OF STUDY EVEN IF IT’S A KNOWN FACT THAT THE TYPE AND SCALE OF WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT VARIOUS FROM PROJECT TO PROJECT AND CONTEXT TO CONTEXT BASED ON CLIMATIC CONDITIONS AND ORIGINAL DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS, IT IS VERY MUCH NEEDED THAT THE URBAN FORM AND THE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF EVERY WATERFRONT CONTINUE TO REACT TO THE CHANGING DEMANDS, WHILE IT IS ALSO TRYING TO MAINTAIN ITS HERITAGE AND SAFEGUARD ITS NATURAL FEATURES, BY DETAIL INVESTIGATION OF SUCH WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT, EFFECTIVE INFORMATION’S CAN BE GAINED ABOUT THE DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH AIMS TO DISCOVER THE IMPORTANT FACTORS WHICH ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUCCESS OF GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL WATERFRONTS BY CASE STUDY INVESTIGATION METHODS. AS A RESULT THE INTENT OF THIS STUDY IS TO CONSTRUCT DESIGN GUIDELINES AND STRATEGIES THAT WILL HELP IN SUCCESSFUL REVITALIZATION OF POST INDUSTRIAL WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT SITES INTO A COMFORTABLE AND FUNCTIONAL AREA, THE SCOPE OF THIS RESEARCH INCLUDES A DETAIL INVESTIGATION AND ANALYSIS OF SUCCESSFUL WATERFRONT REDEVELOPED PROJECTS AROUND THE GLOBE, WHICH ARE CONSIDERED TO BE SUCCESSFUL BY THEIR DESIGNERS AS WELL AS USERS OF THE WATERFRONT. PROJECT AIM THIS RESEARCH IS MAINLY FOCUSED ON CONSTRUCTING THE DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR REVITALIZING THE POST-INDUSTRIAL WATERFRONTS INTO URBAN PUBLIC LANDSCAPE IN THE CITIES LIKE GLASGOW, THE RESEARCH HOLDS QUALITATIVE AND ORGANIZED CASE STUDIES WHICH INVESTIGATES THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND DESIGN CONCERNED WITH THE REVITALIZATION OF WATERFRONT THE RESEARCH HELPS TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT, THE PROCESS OF DESIGNING AND GUIDELINES WHICH ARE BASICS TO PROCEED AND EXECUTE THE DESIGN, FROM THE ANALYSIS A COMPARATIVE STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF SUCCESSFUL AND GREAT CASE STUDIES WITH THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT’S ALONG THE WATERFRONTS HELPS IN IDENTIFYING SIMILAR TRENDS, A DETAIL UNDERSTANDING OF DESIGN ELEMENTS, ECONOMY AND ENERGY, UNITS OF SPACE, CLIMATE COMFORT AND VISUAL CONNECTIONS IMPORTANT FOR GOOD WATERFRONT DESIGN HAS RESULTED IN CONSTRUCTING THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES WHICH IN TURN SERVES AS A STRATEGIC FOUNDATION WHICH COULD BE IMPLEMENTED BY OTHER SIMILAR WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS A PROPOSAL WAS FORMULATED ON THE BASIS OF THESE DESIGN GUIDELINES WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY ADDRESSING DESIGN ISSUES UNIQUE TO THE GLASGOW GREEN WATERFRONT SITE IN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.

As the number of waterfront projects in Glasgow is increasing day by day because of the growth of the city, and almost one third of the population of the city is in a continuous network of urban communities around the Clyde valley, Hence to set an example for the design of water front development which is free from all commercial ventures, but surely a future well used public space is the main reason behind project. And also to create a series of connected, complimentary and high quality waterfront public spaces the approach considers the relationship between waterfront, green spaces, habitats and the needs of surroundings communities in Glasgow and Clyde valley area
ORIGINS AND GROWTH OF GLASGOW : INDUSTRIAL GLASGOW BEGAN TO EMERGE WITH NEW INDUSTRIES IN SOAP-MAKING, CHEMICAL PLANTS, SUGAR REFINING AND COTTON TEXTILES ESTABLISHED ON THE CLYDE SIDE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PROXIMITY TO THE RIVER. THE 1707 UNION OF PARLIAMENTS BROUGHT IMMENSE WEALTH TO GLASGOW WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOBACCO TRADE WITH AMERICA. IT WAS THE TOBACCO LORDS WHO INITIATED THE DEEPENING PROPOSALS FOR THE RIVER AND RAISED GLASGOW TO A POSITION OF DOMINANCE IN THE SCOTTISH ECONOMY. BY THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXTENSIVE HARBOR AND THE GREAT SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY, GLASGOW HAD BECOME THE THIRD MOST IMPORTANT PORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE AFTER LIVERPOOL AND LONDON. "THE IMPACT OF CLYDE ON THE CITY OF GLASGOW TOOK MANY FORMS. ITS ROLE AS A HIGHWAY TO THE WORLD AND AS A BIRTHPLACE FOR THE GREAT SHIPS ALLOWED GLASGOW TO BECOME THE 'SECOND CITY OF THE EMPIRE'.“
INDEED, THE CLYDE HAS ALWAYS BEEN SINCE PREHISTORIC TIMES, THE FOCUS OF HUMAN SETTLEMENT AND TODAY, MORE THAN HALF THE POPULATION OF SCOTLAND LIVES WITHIN A SHORT DISTANCE OF THE RIVER CLYDE. THE CLYDE SIDE CONURBATION AND ITS HINTERLAND OF THE CLYDE VALLEY IS A GEOGRAPHIC ENTITY WITH A STRONG SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND HISTORIC INTEGRITY THE RIVER CLYDE HAS ALWAYS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE HISTORY OF GLASGOW. IT IS OFTEN SAID, GLASGOW MADE THE CLYDE AND THE CLYDE MADE GLASGOW. THE CLYDE IS A SHORT RIVER, LITTLE MORE THAN 100 MILES LONG, RISING IN THE LANARK SHIRE HILLS. NOW THE CLYDE IS EXPERIENCING MASSIVE REGENERATION, FINDING A NEW IDENTITY AS A RECREATIONAL, RESIDENTIAL AND BUSINESS AREA. AS THE NUMBER OF WATERFRONT PROJECTS IN GLASGOW IS INCREASING DAY BY DAY BECAUSE OF THE GROWTH OF THE CITY, AND ALMOST ONE THIRD OF THE POPULATION OF THE CITY IS IN A CONTINUOUS NETWORK OF URBAN COMMUNITIES AROUND THE CLYDE VALLEY, HENCE TO SET AN EXAMPLE FOR THE DESIGN OF WATER FRONT DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS FREE FROM ALL COMMERCIAL VENTURES, BUT SURELY A FUTURE WELL USED PUBLIC SPACE IS THE MAIN REASON BEHIND PROJECT. AND ALSO TO CREATE A SERIES OF CONNECTED, COMPLIMENTARY AND HIGH QUALITY WATERFRONT PUBLIC SPACES THE APPROACH CONSIDERS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WATERFRONT, GREEN SPACES, HABITATS AND THE NEEDS OF SURROUNDINGS COMMUNITIES IN GLASGOW AND CLYDE VALLEY AREA

SITE : GLASGOW GREEN AND ITS WATERFRONT CURRENT USE IN 1450, JAMES II (1430-1460) GRANTED THE LANDS OF GLASGOW GREEN TO WILLIAM TURNBULL, BISHOP OF GLASGOW. GLASGOW GREEN IS THE ONLY PUBLIC PARK IN GLASGOW WITH WATERFRONT GLASGOW GREEN IS THE OLDEST “PUBLIC PARK” IN BRITAIN AND THE RICH DIVERSITY OF GLASGOW GREEN’S HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS IS UNEQUALLED IN THE UK. GLASGOW GREEN’S HISTORICAL PAST IS WELL DOCUMENTED ALONG WITH MANY OF THE BUILDINGS, BRIDGES AND MONUMENTS, IN SUMMARY GLASGOW GREEN IS LOCATED IN ATTRACTIVE GROUNDS IN THE HEART OF THE CITY, ATTRACTING OVER 2 MILLION VISITORS EACH YEAR (GLASGOWVANT, 2011)
IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY VISITOR SURVEY OF USES IN THE GREEN, THERE IS NO RELIABLE MECHANISM FOR ESTABLISHING CURRENT LEVELS OF USE. HOWEVER, THOSE INVOLVED IN MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE PARK ARE CLEAR THAT ITS USE AS A LOCAL PARK IS OVERSHADOWED BY THE POOR CONDITION OF MUCH OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT, PARTICULARLY THE GORBALS, AND INSECURITY GENERATED BY SEEMINGLY REMOTE AND UNSUPERVISED SPACES SET IN A DECAYING LANDSCAPE SIMILAR TO THAT OF CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK BEFORE ITS SUBSTANTIAL RENEWAL.
THE LOCALITY GLASGOW GREEN IS LOCATED JUST EAST OF THE CITY CENTRE, BOUNDED BETWEEN THE RIVER CLYDE, THE GORBALS TO THE SOUTH, WITH CALTON AND BRIDGETON TO THE NORTH AND EAST RESPECTIVELY. THE PARK CAN BE ACCESSED FROM A NUMBER OF NEIGHBOURING STREETS; SALTMARKET, GREENDYKE STREET, KINGS DRIVE AND GREENHEAD STREET. ACCESS FROM SOUTH OF THE RIVER CLYDE IS FROM ADELPHI STREET VIA ST ANDREWS SUSPENSION BRIDGE. THE PARK LINKS THE COMMUNITIES AND SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS OF BRIDGETON, GORBALS AND CALTON WITH THE CITY CENTRE AND EACH OTHER AND IS DISSECTED AND BOUNDED BY ROADS USED BY TRAFFIC 24HRS A DAY. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF LOCAL SCHOOLS INCLUDING BLACK FRIARS AND ST JAMES PRIMARY SCHOOLS THAT USE GLASGOW GREEN FOR EDUCATION AND RECREATION. (GLASGOWVANT, 2011)
EVEN THOUGH THE SITE GLASGOW GREEN AND ITS WATERFRONT IS LOCATED AT AN ATTRACTIVE AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE PLACE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY, ITS BEEN NOTICED THAT THE WATERFRONT AREA IN THE PARK IS BEING UNDER USED AND REQUIRES TO REVITALIZE ANDACTIVATE THE WATERFRONT AREA OF THE PARK .

THE AREA AROUND THE PEOPLES PALACE REMAINS VERY POPULAR AS DOES THE MUSEUM ITSELF WHICH ATTRACTED OVER 500,000 VISITORS IN 2010 THEREBY PLACING IT AS GLASGOW'S FOURTH MOST POPULAR VISITOR ATTRACTION - THE TOP PLACE BEING HELD NOT BY THE BURRELL AS MOST PEOPLE MIGHT EXPECT BUT BY THE ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUM AT KELVINGROVE WITH ALMOST 820,000 VISITORS IN 2012. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE EXPECTED TO VISIT THE PEOPLE'S PALACE IN 2012 IS ESTIMATED TO BE 650,000.. THE PARK IS UNIQUE IN THE CITY IN THAT IT PLAYS HOST TO A NUMBER OF ROWING CLUBS WHICH TRAIN AND COMPETE ON THE CLYDE. IT IS SEEN BY THE ROWING COMMUNITY AS THE SPIRITUAL HOME OF ROWING IN SCOTLAND. THE RIVER AND THE GREEN WERE JOINTLY THE VENUE FOR WHAT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE THIRD BIGGEST ROWING EVENT IN BRITAIN, THE 'EDINBURGH CRYSTAL' CLYDE ROWING WEEKEND HELD ANNUALLY IN APRIL AND THIS YEAR ATTRACTING 412 CREWS FROM 42 CLUBS IN THE UK WITH AN ESTIMATED ATTENDANCE OF 5,000 SPECTATORS. THE GREEN ALSO PROVIDES THE SETTING FOR A NUMBER OF ORGANISED EVENTS INCLUDING THE GLASGOW FAIR, FIREWORKS DISPLAYS AND IN RECENT YEARS THE FINISH OF THE GLASGOW MARATHON. THE MARATHON IS TO BE REPLACED BY THE GREAT SCOTTISH RUN, BUT AGAIN THE GREEN WILL PLAY A KEY ROLE BY STAGING THE START AND FINISH OF THE EVENT.
