Introduction

Halloween is a time for both celebration and superstition. Celebrated world over on 31st of Oct, a day that is between autumn and winter, the occasion has grown to become a secular celebration by children of the world. It started in the 8th century when people lit bonfires and wore scary costumes to ward off evil spirits and ghosts. The tradition has morphed into children roaming the neighborhood wearing scary masks and collecting candy treats. It also ushers in the cold winters with sweets and meetings.

Inflate a balloon and by Using the glue mixture put layers crumbling paper make shapes of newsprint paper and tissue for eyes, nose, teeth etc. and paper as explained earlier. tape it on the balloon as you like.

3 Once completely dry, deflate or burst the balloon to take the mask out. Smoothen the edges by cutting extra paper. Paint the mask.

4 Punch holes and tie thread and your mask is ready to be worn.

After making the mask the surface can be treated in different ways to achieve different effects. Here the surface was damped with wet tissue paper to give a wrinkled skin. The mouth has been cut to look like a sinister smile.

For this mask, it was painted blue and then dabbed with white color to give it a texture. You can use this to make hair, scales, hide etc. Here the mouth and the teeth were painted afterwards to make it look like a cartoon monster, to make it less scary.

Here is a mask that is a little more serious looking. After making the mask, you can peel of the tissue paper randomly to make it look like torn skin and selectively painting parts and leaving the rest. The big borders for the eyes and the serious expression gives it a horrifying look.

Here is another example of a sinister looking mask, but for this additional parts like horns and eyebrows made out of tissue paper were added separately on to the mask. Also the teeth were painted to make it ever scarier.

This mask was made to look like a skull that can be worn on a face. For this, more tissue paper can be added to certain parts like cheeks, eyebrows, nose bridge etc to make it more realistic. You can sprinkle smaller pieces of thread to give it a unique texture.
