Nakashima Workshop Design Project 1 Scrap Innovation : Cat House Packaging and Visual Identity 1 : Hairclips Packaging and Visual Identity 2 : Roller Skates Product Range Design : Kitchenware Craft Cluster Products : Chennapatna Bag Design Miscellaneous Products Internship Project Service Design User Interface Design : Mobile Application
I am a 2015 Accessory Design graduate from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. At present, I am pursuing my Masters of Furniture Design from National Institute of Design, Paldi. I love Psychology; how the mind works to solve the toughest and most challenging of problems is something that inspires me. I believe in making clean and effective designs which serve a memorable experience. I am hardworking, determined & thoughtful. Apart from designing I love dancing, reading & traveling. My portfolio covers varied design fields from Furniture design, Product design, UI/UX, Graphic Design & Photography.
DESIGN BRIEF Design any piece of furniture inspired from George Nakashima’s style and belief of usinfg wood to make furniture. A workshop to celebrate Nakashima’s work in furniture design was conducted in NID. Students of selected semesters were to conceptualise and make their furniture pieces within this time frame.
01
Nakashima Inspired Side Table
ABOUT GEORGE NAKASHIMA George Katsutoshi Nakashima was a Japanese-American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker. His contribution to American Crafts and also NID (India) have led to the creation of an iconic style in woodworking and furniture design. Nakashima’s signature woodworking design could be summed up with the following terms : - Smooth tops - Natural and tapered edges - Butterfly joints - Spindle legs Importance was given to maintaining the nature of wood rather than forcing it to become something else.
THE WORKSHOP
Tapered edges and spindle legs : Grass Seated Chair
The Nakashima workshop was conducted in NID, India as an homage to the well known furniture designer and architect. We were encouraged by our faculties to first observe every detail of his prototypes made in collaboration with NID’s Gajanan Upadhyay. The rest of the days were spent on drawing forms inspired from these details and in making them in the workshop. Butterfly joints : Decorative and structural
THE FINAL PIECE The final product of this workshop is a side table which was made in collaboration with a classmate. It has subtle and prominent influences of the Nakashima style. 1. The smooth top of the table with mirrored and distinct grain patterns of teak wood. The natural shape of the trunk was maintained to form the slabs joining as the table surface 2. Butterfly joints to hold the two slabs of wood together. The gap in-between allows the wood to breathe; contract and expand without tension. Ends were tapered from the bottom of the surface. 3. This gives the illusion of a lighter and thinner surface. Spindle legs stretching at a slight angle emphasises the illusion of lightness and almost makes the surface 4. of the table look like it is floating.
The final furniture : Side Table
DESIGN BRIEF To design a surface and seating, where a laptop can be used, for any place of choice on the NID campus. The maximum usage duration is 1-1.5 hours.
02
Laptop Table + Seating
THE CHOSEN SPOT The place for which chose to create the table and seating was the college cafe’. The front part of the cafe, where the windows to collect your ordered items are, is more active. The back part tends to be less occupied and mostly used for work. This space has ample plug points to charge laptops and other devices being used. I felt that the space becomes good place to have a short term seating and surface for laptop usage. A person can grab a quick bite to eat and at the same time work on the laptop for a short duration.
The college cafe’
THE FORM INSPIRATION The idea was to embody the NID logo. Considering the flat and polygonal nature of the logo, the challenge I gave myself was to make the logo form 3D in such a way that it does not look like it is simply extruded. The other challenge was also to make sure balance and structure was somehow maintained in spite of the very edgy forms.
The NID logo
THE PROTOTYPE The final prototype was made using Surface developed Mild Steel sheet, Mild Steel oval sections, Mild steel tube and MDF. The table surface is a 19mm thick plywood top shapes as the ‘D’ in the logo (half circle). The table bottom is 2mm thick mild steel sheets, bent and welded to form the right angle triangular ‘N’ as seen in the logo.
The base is a load bearing elemet made using oval section pipes. This balances the edgy structure and adds to the geometric nature of the furniture, without overpowering the negative spaces. The stool seat is MDF turned and shaped manually one the lathe. The circular form represents the dot of the ‘I’ in the logo
The stool pole shows the negative space between the triangle and half circle in the logo. Overall, the form is a result of putting the elements of the logo together in a non extruded manner. Thsi resulted in the logo being seen and recognised from different angles of viewing the furniture piece. This piece is to be fixed permanently to the concrete pavement seen in the cafe’.
WHAT I LEARNT The project gave me a better understanding of metal and metal processes (welding, grinding, non-welded joineries, bracing) It opend my mind to non-parallel forms and geometry without the extreme heaviness.
Making this prototype required using the wood and metal workshop of the institute. Therefore, using the various machines provided me with the practice and experience to use them in the appropriate manner. It also made me explore the versatility of each tool and machine.

Scrap Innovation Design
SCRAP INNOVATION The Scrap Innovation module was a 4 week project done as a part of the Construction & Fabrication course. This gave us the freedom and choice of using any and all available waste/scrap materials in order to create a useful and innovative product. Usage of sustainable and natural materials was encouraged. Recycling to reduce waste and using the same to design and make products helped us uderstand the need to maintain a circular economy. Through the project, we explored many new processes and tools to be used on the chosen materials in order to make our designs a reality.
THE CAT HOUSE The item chosen by me was a cardboard drum with Aluminium closure/ clamps for the lid. The idea was simple and effective; to design a space to be used by cats. Challenges i faced while making the product was cutting and shaping cardboard chutes to form legs/stoppers to fit the circumference of the main drum. Attaching the same to the drum was done with care using araldite and putty, so as to make the joinery strong and seamless. Cardboard drum with metal closure/clamps
Cutting the entrance and exits points
Heating acrylic in vacuum forming machine
Molding heated acrylic to the drum’s shape
Araldite and putty joinery
Riveted acrylic frames to add strenght
Cat house with news paper balls as cat litter
THE PROCESS 1. The photos to the left describe the process of making the cat house. 2. Cutting out the two entrance and exit points. This was done using the table jigsaw machine (flat lid) as well as the hand held jigsaw (curved surface)
paka nyumba etymology : Language - Swahili paka - cat | nyumba - house
3. The legs were cut from thick cardboard chutes. These were shaped to the curvature of the drum. 4. Legs were attached to the drum using araldite. The joinery was made stronger and seamless by applying putty. 5. A coat of emulsion reduced the porosity of the cardboard. This was sanded to make the surface texture smooth. 6. The cat house was spray painted with several coats of the desired colour. 7. Acrylic frames for the entrance and exit points were cut accurately using a laser cutting machine. Holes for rivets were cut as well. 8. The frames were attached to the inside and outside of the entrance and exit points using aluminium rivets.

DESIGN BRIEF Design a range of kitchen accessories using Cork, exploring its versatile properties.
06
Range Design : Cork Kitchenware
CORK MATERIAL INFORMATION Cork is an impermeable, buoyant material, a prime-subset of bark tissue that is harvested for commercial use primarily from Quercus suber (the Cork Oak). Cork is composed of suberin, a hydrophobic substance, and because of its impermeable, buoyant, elastic, and fire retardant properties, it is used in a variety of products, the most common of which is for wine stoppers.
CORK EXISTING PRODUCTS
1. CORK & ACRYLIC CUTTING BOARD A standard size cutting board with a base of sturdy acrylic and cover of cork. It has a compartment on one side which can be used to collect the cut vegetables or the waste. The cork cutting mat can be seperated from the acrylic base as both materials need to be cleaned differently. Cork was used for the cutting mat as it does not register marks easily and can handle wet products without staining.
2. CORK COASTERS A set of 6 cork coasters hand painted with white acrylic paint. The geometric patterns are to exaggerate the simple straight silhouettes of the products from this range. Cork having high grip (friction) heat resistant and water retardant properties makes a perfect material for coasters.
3. CORK & ACRYLIC OIL AND SPICE BOX A set of an ‘L’ shaped box made of cork and a rectangular box of acrylic. These can be used as one unit or as seperate units. The cork box can contain oil containers, sauces etc. and the acrylic box can contain 8 small containers of spices
4. CORK CASSEROLE GRIPPERS A pair of cork grippers which can be tightly fitted on to the handles of a casserole. The high heat resistance, frictional and cushioning properties of cork make it a good material to grip handles and carry something hot and heavy without the worry of slipping.
07
DESIGN BRIEF Chennapatna Craft products
Design products that would enhance the fine and gross motor skills of children between the age of 2 and 4, exploring the technique (single sided lathe) used to make Channapatna toys.
CLIENT BOARD The client chosen is children of the age group of 2-4 years. In this age group, children need to develop their fine and gross motor skills in order to have better hand eye coordination and growth. Children of this age group usually know to grab, pull and hold pens/pencils with all 5 fingers.
EXISTING PRODUCTS BOARD The following board shows the products which exist in the market which help in enhancing fine and gross motor skills of 2-4 year old children.
1. IDENTIFY FORMS This Cube has circles of 4 different radii cut out on the top, and single circles of each radius on all 4 sides. The top of the box slides off a corner axis enabling easy opening. Shapes to be passed through the circles are spheres, cylinders and spindles. This product helps children understand the 3 shapes’ relation to a circle and also teaches them sizes.
HOW TO USE
2. Pencil Grippers Children of 2-4 years of age have a tendancy to holdeverythimg using all 5 fingers. Therefore, they end up adding more pressure to their fingers while holding something small or thin, leading to pain in the fingers. These grippers with a depression on one end guide the child to hold the pen/pencil at the right place. The depression also prevents the pen/pencil from slipping from the fingers allowing the child to relax his/her grip.

DESIGN BRIEF
Bag Design
Design a collection of bags using leather/rexine, for 20-30 year old women. The bags should be able to accommodate a clutch wallet, a mobile phone, an iPod, a travel sized hair brush, pens, keys and a compact mirror. The forecast chosen for this project was ‘Native Patterns’ (WGSN). The bags are apt for women who like to explore with design, but not with colour. Therefore, accent colours are used sparingly to add contrast to the neutral colours that would go with most outfits.

Internship Project
This project was undertaken during my internship at Tata Elxsi, Bengaluru
DESIGN BRIEF The design brief, as mentioned to me, was to redesign the website and the portable device application of an Indian daily newspaper of my choice.
WHY THIS PROJECT Most people in India, read at least one newspaper everyday. People who have been reading a newspaper over months or years are accustomed to the pattern and contents of the newspaper. An impatient reader does not want to spend much time reading the paper. Each person has a unique way of interacting with the newspaper. It is a very personal activity that one enjoys daily. This uniqueness creates a sort of an emotional connection between the newspaper and the reader.
CHOSING THE DAILY NEWSPAPER The national daily newspaper I chose is “THE HINDU. It is the 3rd most read newspaper in India. Its readers range from the young to the elderly with varied interests.
THE CONTENTS OF THE NEWSPAPER: 1.City News 2. State News 3. Southern Region 4. Northern Region 5. Editorial 6. Comment 7. National
8.International 9. Business 10. Science & Technology 11. Sport 12. Classifieds 13. Supplement/Other Publications
WHO READS THE HINDU A study conducted in 2012 by V. Yogalakshmi shows that people who read The Hindu are of the age group 20-60 years and above. Of these, 38% of the people prefer The Hindu newspaper over others. This includes students, senior citizens, businessmen, house wives etc.
The Hindu has been an intricate part of my life, it brings me closer to everything that is going on around me.

DESIGN BRIEF Service Design : Platform Ticket Purchase
Design a service for an efficient purchase of a platform ticket.
WHAT IS A PLATFORM TICKET A platform ticket is a type of rail ticket issued by some railway systems, permitting the bearer to access the platforms of a railway station, but not to board and use any train services. It allows people to walk with their friends and loved ones all the way to the passenger car at stations where the general public is not admitted to platforms.
WHY THE PLATFORM TICKET SERVICE The Platform Ticket Service which is carried on in the context of Indian Railways is not a very efficient one. The is a lot of scope for improvement and efficency for a better functionality.

The model of the counters and how the procedure of buying the platform tickets should happen for a better and an efficient service.
HOW IT WORKS The system has two parts. One using the internet, the second is on the spot (railway station). People who book their tickets online, will have an option of selecting whether or not they will have escorts. Once the option for escorts is checked, the customer can choose the number of escorts they would like toaccompanythem.Dependingontheirchoice, thewebsitecalculatesthe total and adds it to the travel fare, all of which is payable online. On the day of travel, the traveller’s ticket and escort details will be checked on the left facing counter near the entry arch. The escort can enter the platform only if the number of escorts mentioned in the treveller’s ticket is cross checked and approved. For people who require access to the platform but, are not escorts, a
counter (front facing) for buying platform coupons is available at the entrance. A coupon is valid for 2 hours only. the system is similar to that of the Delhi Metro. The customer swipes the token on the machine to enter the platform. On exit, the customer must drop the token in the machine’s collection slot. This also helps keep track of the time spent on the platform by the customer.

User Interface Design : Crave, a mobile application
DESIGN BRIEF Design a mobile application for the fast moving lifestyle of people today, which would cater to their sudden food cravings and the little spare time they have to cook.
Still confused as to what to cook? not any more... With Crave you can create recipes like never before.
CRAVE EMERGENCE Crave was created to cater to those who have specific cravings & leftovers or mismatchedingridients in their pantry. It always causes a confusion as to what to make using those ingridients. Therefore the idea of Crave as an app emerged.
CRAVE ADVANTAGES Crave has a unique way of creating recipes which are not seen in regular kitchen, recipe books and recipe making apps. Crave helps with create recipes on the basis of the following: 1. It creates recipes with any required ingridient input. 2. It creates recipes according to any cusine craving you are having. 3. It creates recipes according to the time of your involvement in cooking.
