t was almost midnight on a relaxing Rhode Island vacation when Tracey Braham’s 13-year-old daughter, Sarah, came running to her bedside, grabbing her throat. “I can’t breathe. I need to go to the emergency room. I’m dying!” “As a parent, my first instinct was to help Sarah calm down and try to figure out what was going on with her physically,” says Tracey. “Was she choking? Could it be an allergic reaction?” Three years earlier, Sarah had been diagnosed with celiac disease, an immune reaction to eating gluten. Sarah swore she hadn’t eaten anything new, but she was clearly suffering. “She said her heart was racing and her throat was swelling shut. She was adamant that she was dying. It was very scary,” says Tracey. At the emergency room, doctors couldn’t determine what was causing Sarah’s symptoms. When the crisis passed, the Braham family returned to Virginia Beach with unanswered questions about Sarah’s health. She continued to feel tightness in her throat and fluttering in her stomach. Soon after, her complaints included headaches, dizziness, numbness, sweaty palms, and joint pain. Sarah reported these symptoms to her CHKD gastroenterologist who examined her and ran tests to try to figure out the cause of her symptoms. But all tests confirmed that Sarah was in good physical health. “That’s when we were faced with considering whether something else could be causing the problem,” says Tracey. Sarah was referred to Alexandra Laramee, a licensed clinical social worker at CHKD and manager of the mental health program. FALL 2018

5

This type of referral is not uncommon. Dealing with a chronic physical illness like Sarah’s celiac disease, which requires her to eat a wheat-free diet, can affect a young person’s mental health. Laramee diagnosed Sarah with generalized anxiety disorder and somatic symptom disorder, which simply means that her anxiety manifests itself in physical symptoms. “Mental health issues are chronic diseases too – it’s not like a surgical procedure where we can remove or fix something all at once. There are periods of stability and periods of needing therapy,” says Laramee. For any child facing mental health challenges, early intervention and treatment is critical to recovery. Local children seeking mental health care are facing a crisis. There are not enough inpatient psychiatric beds available for the children and teens who need them. Patients wait for hours or even days in the emergency department before available space can be found – often at a facility many hours away. Even those who aren’t in need of inpatient care may wait weeks for an appointment with a licensed clinician who can diagnose and treat them. Mental health care for children is a waiting game. And the kids can’t wait. CHKD is answering this critical need, ushering in a new era of mental health services for children in our region and beyond. Armed with the recent Virginia Department of Health approval to add 60 inpatient psychiatric beds for children and teens, CHKD is developing plans for a new mental health facility on its Norfolk campus that will offer both inpatient and outpatient care, in addition to increasing outpatient mental health services at its locations throughout the region. Now 16, Sarah is proud of her progress, but says she spent many months struggling with her diagnosis. “I always thought anxiety was just about worrying. I thought, I’m not worried about anything. It can’t be that. It was hard to handle,” Sarah says. During their scheduled weekly appointments, Sarah and Laramee worked through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), one of the eight evidence-based treatments offered by CHKD’s mental health team. CBT teaches patients how to connect thoughts to behaviors and gives them a set of problem-solving principles to manage their illness. For Sarah, that meant learning to recognize and cope with her feelings in a healthy way and to master situations that may lead to feeling anxious. 6

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

Recovery from this sort of challenge takes hard work. And the pathway is not always clear. After a few sessions of therapy with Laramee, Sarah began to feel frustrated. She was still having a hard time accepting that anxiety could be the root cause of her physical symptoms. And she felt like progress was taking too long. She spiraled into depression. “I felt like nobody could help me feel better,” says Sarah. “I felt like the only thing to do was to go to sleep and not wake up, so I wouldn’t have to suffer the pain and feel sad anymore.” “Finding out my daughter didn’t want to be around anymore was the worst day of my life,” says Sarah’s dad, Steve. “It ripped my heart out. I thought, What have I done wrong?” For six months, Sarah’s depression kept her from having a healthy social life. She felt too nervous to go out to dinner with friends. She lied about being busy so she didn’t have to hang out. And she blamed herself for the way she was feeling. “When your child has everything they need in life and has a lot of people around them who love them, it’s hard to imagine why they would ever feel sad,” says Tracey. “You do everything to make them happy and you can’t. It’s heartbreaking.” After developing a depressive disorder on top of her existing anxiety, Sarah remained in therapy despite slow progress, battling her negative thoughts and staying focused on getting better. “It’s important to remember that people with anxiety and depression are not sad, tired, moody, or uninterested on purpose. These are real, biological diseases,” says Laramee. “Sarah was suffering terribly. She was in a really dark place and could not see the light at all. “Her brain needed recalibrating.” The number of children and adolescents admitted to children’s hospitals for suicidal thoughts or self-harm has more than doubled in the past decade. At CHKD, three to five children seek crisis care in the emergency department each day for mental health concerns. Since its inception in 2014, when only six providers offered services at just one location, CHKD’s mental health program has grown to include child psychiatry, two psychologists, three psychiatric nurse practitioners, and 26 licensed clinical social workers and licensed professional counselors, providing care at nine locations throughout the region. Today, CHKD offers crisis evaluation through the emergency department and outpatient treatment for children, adolescents, young adults, and their families with a wide variety of challenges including depression, anxiety, ADHD, sleep disorders, phobias, eating disorders, and impulse control disorders.

“Many children in this area have significant levels of depression and are at risk of dying … We can shift that paradigm. And most importantly, we can save lives.” – Dr. Peter Dozier

When Sarah opened up about her depression at a routine gastroenterology appointment for her celiac disease, pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Peter Dozier was immediately called to the appointment, where he arrived with his therapy dog, Koji.

“At CHKD, I received care specifically designed for me, and everybody made sure I was in a safe environment. I will always have anxiety, but thanks to my doctors, I know it won’t control me.” – Sarah

Although learning to manage her anxiety will take time, Sarah now has the tools she needs to handle everyday stressful situations.

8

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

The new, transformational initiative is designed to meet the demand for more of these mental health services. In addition to the inpatient facility, CHKD plans to expand its outpatient care to include a day treatment program, additional clinicians, and more therapy services throughout the region. When Sarah was at her lowest point, Dr. Peter Dozier, a child psychiatrist at CHKD, joined her team of care providers and prescribed medication to help relieve her stress and decrease the frequency of her panic attacks. Therapy is at the core of Sarah’s treatment, but adding medication to her therapy regimen gives her the upper hand over her anxiety. “The medicine works behind the scenes for me,” she says, “like a protective shield that makes my condition more manageable.” For those with anxiety disorders, it’s common to need medication to control panic attacks, says Dr. Dozier. “There are many medications to help manage anxiety, so we had to try on different ones, like finding the best fit in clothing, to determine which would fit Sarah best,” he says. “Dr. Dozier is really good at explaining what the medicine is and making sure my family and I are comfortable with it,” adds Sarah. If Sarah is struggling with her anxiety and techniques from therapy aren’t helping her cope effectively, Dr. Dozier will review her medication. Together, and in conjunction with Sarah’s medical team, Dr. Dozier and Laramee collaborate on Sarah’s mental health care to create the best and safest treatment plan for her. “This did not start overnight. It has been growing for years,” says Dr. Dozier. “Now, Sarah isn’t afraid to describe emotions she goes through. She’s involved and motivated. Her anxiety and depression are no longer threats to who she is.” To address the current barriers to accessing mental health care and the shortage of pediatric psychiatrists in the region, CHKD medical group pediatricians are arming themselves with tools to better assess, identify, and treat children with mental health needs. This includes a partnership with The Resource for Advancing Children’s Health (REACH) Institute, an innovative program designed to train primary care providers in early intervention and effective treatment. Because seventy-five percent of children facing mental health challenges are first seen in the primary care setting, all CHKD pediatricians evaluate kids for anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts or behavior during routine visits. This practice started ahead of the guidelines recently issued by

the American Academy of Pediatrics that call for routine depression screening of youth ages 12 and older during primary care or sports physical visits. CHKD’s mental health program encourages communication and coordination between CHKD pediatricians and subspecialists, and the child psychiatry and psychology departments. CHKD is also developing telemedicine technology that allows the mental health team to provide quick and convenient remote assessments to children in crisis being seen by their primary care physician. By telling her story, Sarah wants to encourage others to speak up about the way they’re feeling and seek help when it comes to their mental health, noting that anxiety is an invisible disease. “Without CHKD, we might be telling a totally different story today,” says Steve. “I’m excited to see that they’re building an inpatient facility just for kids. Had it been available during Sarah’s depression, we may have tried going that route.” “Many children in this area have significant levels of depression and are at risk of dying,” says Dr. Dozier. “With CHKD’s mental health initiative, we have the opportunity to provide mental health care to all children – not just those who are in crisis. We can shift that paradigm. And most importantly, we can save lives.” The new mental health facility with comprehensive inpatient, day treatment, and outpatient programs will be complete in approximately four years and serve 2,100 local children like Sarah every year. “At CHKD, I received care specifically designed for me, and everybody made sure I was in a safe environment,” says Sarah. “I will always have anxiety, but thanks to my doctors, I know it won’t control me.”

Heading to surgery can be a stressful experience for children. But 5-year-old Anthony Johnson from Hampton was all smiles before his operation at CHKD’s Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point in June. That’s because he was sitting in the driver’s seat of an electric Hummer, ready to take it for a spin to the operating room. The surgery center has two electric Hummers – one pink and one yellow – available for patients to drive themselves to surgery. “It’s about the distraction and making the whole thing fun, which is always the goal when working with kids,” says Lynne Enneking, a staff nurse at Oyster Point. Once in the Hummer, Anthony showed no signs of nervousness about his impending procedure to repair an umbilical hernia, a condition where the opening in the abdominal wall fails to close after birth. “Anthony was a little cranky this morning because he had to get up early,” says his dad, Jamal. “But he got excited to drive the Hummer and had a good time going back to surgery.” With a doctor or nurse by their side to help them steer, kids drive the cars from the day surgery waiting area, down the hall, and straight to the doorway of the operating room. “As pediatric specialists, we understand how important it is to relieve the anxiety and stress that kids may feel in a medical environment,” says Dr. Ronald Brodsky, a pediatric anesthesiologist at CHKD. “The playful nature of the cars makes the separation from their parents less scary.” The staff at the Oyster Point surgery center makes use of the cars nearly every day for kids ages 2 to 7 who are upset or reluctant to loosen their grip on mom or dad. “If they have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket that makes them comfortable, it goes in the car too,” says Enneking. “They load up everything and take it with them to the OR.” These fun distractions are specifically meant to calm kids before an operation. At Oyster Point, it’s the Hummers. At CHKD’s hospital in Norfolk and surgery center in Virginia Beach, push cars, iPads, and red wagons are used. But the toys aren’t only beneficial to patients. They can help ease parents’ nerves too. “There are times when it’s next to impossible to separate kids from their parents before surgery. You wind up with a very unhappy child, which makes for unhappy parents,” says Dr. Brodsky. “The separation is much smoother if a child is on board with the process, which is what makes the car rides so valuable.” Although children may still be nervous about what will happen in the operating room, they arrive with giant smiles and excitement after the experience of driving the car there. “It makes my job of getting them off to sleep a little easier if they’re not upset or crying,” Dr. Brodsky says. “Then, we let them pick a flavor for their ‘sleepy medicine.’ Giving them some control over what’s happening definitely helps to reduce anxiety.” Oftentimes, the kids’ only worry is where their car is parked and whether it will be there when they wake up. 10

A family’s spina bifida journey

S

ix-year-old Maria Pocta of Virginia Beach leans toward her little brother and plucks a daisy from his grasp, placing it in her hair above her left ear. Three-year-old Andrew Joseph grins and turns away, a signal to his sister to chase him through the gardens of their backyard. Between the rows of rose bushes, he slows and turns to her as he giggles, as if to say, “You’ll never catch me.” It is pure, wholesome child’s play, but with a twist. Andrew Joseph is trying to give his sister the slip in his special needs wheelchair. Maria gives chase in her own wheelchair. Maria and Andrew Joseph were both born with spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spine doesn’t develop normally, resulting in an opening over part of the spinal cord. Spina bifida can range from mild to severe: The location, size, and type of defect determines the severity. In the case of the Pocta siblings, their spinal cords developed outside of the body and were contained in a fluid-filled sac protruding from their backs, called a myelomeningocele, which requires delicate neurosurgery to repair. Maria is paralyzed from the waist down; Andrew Joseph’s paralysis is less severe, affecting him only below the knees. Fortunately, the Pocta family has CHKD to help with Maria and Andrew Joseph’s varied medical needs. And for children with spina bifida, there are many. These special patients require multidisciplinary care and therapy from a variety of surgeons and specialists. They need neurosurgery and plastic surgery to close the opening of the spine. As they grow, they need orthopedic surgery to ensure proper development of their bones. And to keep their bodies functioning, they receive care from urologists, nephrologists, and gastroenterologists, plus physical and occupational therapists. Because patients like Maria and Andrew Joseph face many medical challenges and must see many providers, CHKD brings everyone together for them through the Spina Bifida Clinic, where families can see multiple specialists, complete testing, and receive a variety of services during one appointment. FALL 2018

“Pulling together a variety of pediatric services is something only a children’s hospital like CHKD can do. It gives the family the chance to have a life beyond spina bifida.” – Dr. Joseph Dilustro “A parent could spend an entire week just driving to see all of their child’s providers independently,” says Dr. Joseph Dilustro, a CHKD pediatric neurosurgeon. “Pulling together a variety of pediatric services is something only a children’s hospital like CHKD can do. It gives the family the chance to have a life beyond spina bifida.” The siblings’ parents, Cristina and Andrew, agree. They credit CHKD’s approach as a defining factor in their ability to balance all they have on their plates. “The doctors all work as a team,” says Cristina. “If we were seeing five different doctors for each child, it would be a real challenge just to get to all the appointments. Then the doctors would have to find time to communicate with each other and then to get back to us. Thanks to the clinic, we get to see them all at the same time, and they come to the table already on the same page.” In addition to Dr. Dilustro, the core group of CHKD doctors on Maria and Andrew Joseph’s care team includes orthopedic surgeon Dr. Carl St. Remy, urologist Dr. Louis Wojcik, gastroenterologist Dr. Orhan Atay, and nephrologist Dr. Irene Restaino. “We love them all. They treat us with dignity and understanding at every turn,” Cristina says. “They go out of their way to make sure we are getting the very best treatment, and they confer with one another on the spot so we aren’t waiting for days to see what’s next.” For instance, when the siblings needed minor surgery in February to correct issues with the development of their lower legs and feet, Dr. St. Remy conveniently scheduled both for the same morning. “The goal right now is to keep Maria and Andrew Joseph’s limbs balanced without deformity,” says Dr. St. Remy. “If we can minimize deformities, there is a possibility that as technology progresses and advanced equipment becomes available, they will be better prepared to use those new devices to walk independently.” 14

“When we take the kids to CHKD, it doesn’t feel like a hospital, it feels like a community.” – Andrew, Maria and Andrew Joseph’s dad CHKD’s Spina Bifida Clinic, which follows patients to adulthood, goes beyond gathering doctors and scheduling surgical procedures. CHKD’s Care Connection for Children regularly participates in the clinic, giving families access to case managers and other personnel who help coordinate follow-up care and provide support services in the community. The Care Connection for Children program at CHKD is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Health for children with chronic physical disabilities. “We help to provide access to available community resources and activities, such as inclusive summer camps, and refer and educate about Medicaid waivers and in-home support,” says Candace Collins, a community care coordinator at CHKD. “We are here to assist in the many details of a child’s medical care and collaborate with the child’s medical team.” Thanks to support from CHKD, the Pocta family can focus on letting Maria and Andrew Joseph just be kids. They like to dance, swing at the playground, play baseball, swim in their backyard, and chase animals. They have even tried surfing. Cristina and Andrew set few limits on what they can do and where they can go. “Mom came to me a few years ago wanting to take Maria to the Dominican Republic to see family,” says Dr. Atay. “She did not allow the challenges of traveling with a young child with spina bifida to deter her. Instead, she learned everything she could about specific care routines. Now, I am more like an adviser.” Both children have big smiles and bright personalities, and they embrace every second of freedom they have to keep rolling. Their father gives CHKD a share of the credit for their steadiness and confidence. “When we take the kids to CHKD, it doesn’t feel like a hospital, it feels like a community,” says Andrew. “Everyone there has a very special place in our hearts.”

Community Benefit Report

Investing in our children, our families, and the future of our community. Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters was founded more than 50 years ago on the premise that every child deserves equal access to the best possible pediatric care. Today, CHKD works to identify and meet the most pressing healthcare needs of our community’s young people through a diverse offering of community benefit programs and services. CHKD’s community benefits ease the government’s burden of caring for our region’s neediest and most vulnerable children. Our community benefit programs also subsidize medical services available nowhere else in the area, advance knowledge of children’s health issues, and help build a safer, healthier community for all of our children. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017, CHKD’s total community benefit expenses, minus offsetting revenue, topped $124 million.

Tyshaun, age 11, of Norfolk spent his first two and a half years of life at CHKD.

Medicaid and Charity Care

Subsidized Health Services

CHKD cares for every child who needs our services, regardless of their family’s ability to pay, or the kind of insurance they have. We accept and embrace this responsibility to the community and the financial burden that this mission involves. In 2017, 58 percent of CHKD’s inpatient days were covered by Medicaid, which paid us $35.5 million less than our true cost of providing this care. In addition, the hospital provided $2.6 million in charity care – providing services for free or at a reduced cost to low-income patient families.

CHKD provides many important clinical services to the community that operate at a financial loss because we believe all children deserve equal access to care that meets their unique needs. The list of CHKD’s subsidized services includes, but is not limited to, our child abuse program, which works to protect innocent victims of abuse and neglect; General Academic Pediatrics, which devotes more than 70 percent of its care to children covered by Medicaid and helps train tomorrow’s pediatricians; our childhood cancer program, which surrounds young oncology patients with support, resources, and care; and our mental health program, which is growing rapidly to meet the unprecedented need for pediatric mental health services in our community.

Community Health Improvement Education and Research CHKD makes our community a healthier place for children through programs and services that meet identified public health needs. These services help children living with chronic illnesses and their families find the care and knowledge they need to thrive close to home. Other initiatives help prevent injuries and illnesses, complications of premature birth, child abuse, and neglect. CHKD also works with local partners such as schools, public health agencies, and community service boards to formally assess the pediatric healthcare needs of our region and design programs to meet them. Our goal is a healthier future for every child and a more vibrant future for our community.

Benefit : $124 million

As the regional authority on pediatric health and wellness, CHKD invests in education and research that advances the understanding of pediatric medicine. We provide a setting for clinical research trials and host continuing medical education programs for professionals throughout the region. Our community outreach program brings important health, safety, and wellness information to thousands of parents and families. And we are committed to advancing the future care of children by training physicians in our pediatric residency program and offering fellowships in fields such as child abuse and pediatric emergency medicine.

Honor Roll of Contributors O

livia was born at 29 weeks gestation after her mother experienced life-threatening complications in her pregnancy. Weighing only 1 pound, 14 ounces, Olivia was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at CHKD as her mom recovered. During the first weeks of her life, Olivia needed constant support to help her breathe, and she underwent several surgeries. After nearly four months of care in CHKD’s NICU, Olivia was finally healthy and strong enough to leave the hospital and go home with her family. With the largest and most advanced NICU in the region, CHKD is able to provide the highest level of care to the tiniest and most critically ill babies in Hampton Roads and beyond. CHKD could not provide this kind of care for our NICU babies like Olivia, and other children facing health challenges of all kinds, without the generous support of our donors. For this reason, we recognize those who have contributed $500 or more during the year in our annual Honor Roll. The support and commitment of these individuals and organizations gives kids the best chance of continuing to grow, play, and learn as they navigate life with severe illnesses and recover from traumatic injuries. Today, Olivia is an active 3-year-old who loves Elmo, coloring, and belly laughs. On behalf of Olivia and her family – and the thousands of other children in our community who need CHKD – we thank you. FALL 2018

Walmart celebrates $12 million milestone

Pictured here with market manager Chris Mehler (right) is store manager Ashley Rambo with his wife Candice and their kids, Jacob and Sophie, who have both been treated at CHKD.

E

very year, local Walmart and Sam’s Club associates raise money to support CHKD. The companies employ more than 7,000 people in the Hampton Roads area, and for many, this fundraising effort is a personal mission: Either their own child, or someone close to them, has needed the specialized care that CHKD provides. “We are so fortunate to have a world-class pediatric hospital taking such great care of our local kids,” says Chris Mehler, manager of Walmart’s Virginia market. “I can think of no better way to help the communities Walmart serves than to support CHKD.” During their annual campaign, held in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates throughout Hampton Roads raise money for CHKD through donations at the register as well as a variety of creative in-store fundraising activities. Ashley Rambo, store manager of Walmart’s Neighborhood Market on Kempsville Road in Virginia Beach, knows the importance of supporting CHKD. His 10-year-old daughter,

Sophie, has been treated at CHKD’s Health Center at Oakbrooke nearly her whole life for severe allergies and allergy-induced asthma. Ashley and his wife, Candice, say the care they received has improved the quality of Sophie’s life. “CHKD has helped our family so much, and it brings joy to my heart to help other kids in the community,” says Ashley. “Our associates understand that they’re making a real impact and helping a lot of people they know who have needed CHKD.” Funds from Walmart and Sam’s Club generally go to support radiology services, but this year, the campaign also benefitted the CHKD mental health program. “CHKD’s current mental health initiative for children in crisis helps to fill a compelling need in our region and deserves our support,” says Chris. Over the past three decades, donations from local Walmart and Sam’s Clubs have surpassed $12 million and have helped thousands of local families. “CHKD’s positive impact, not only on the kids and their families but also on the community, is immeasurable,” says Chris. “We are proud to be part of that.”

Making every mile count

Erin O’Brien motivated herself to run a full marathon by turning her training plan into a fundraising campaign for the kids at CHKD.

“Children who are facing health challenges don’t have the strength, experience, or knowledge to care for themselves, so we have to fight for them.” – Erin O’Brien

T

he inspiration behind Erin O’Brien’s Miles for Smiles campaign began with a simple idea to combine a personal fitness goal with her desire to help children at CHKD. Erin had already run eight half marathons when her plan unfolded during CHKD’s annual Radiothon with 94.9 The Point. After hearing so many inspiring patient stories, she decided to challenge herself to run a full marathon, 26.2 miles, and dedicate each mile to a different patient treated at the children’s hospital. She would raise $1,000 in each child’s honor – $26,000 for 26 kids. “This community is so lucky to have a resource like CHKD,” says Erin. “It is so important to have services designed just for kids, and I wanted to help spread awareness about what CHKD does for our local children.” As a Realtor with Howard Hanna, former executive director of Priority Toyota’s Charity Bowl, and president of the Mermaid Circle of the VBCU, Erin is a veteran to raising funds and awareness for CHKD. But her Miles for Smiles campaign was her first stint fundraising completely on her own. “We all have challenges. Some we put upon ourselves and some are put upon us,” Erin says. “Children who are facing 28

health challenges don’t have the strength, experience, or knowledge to care for themselves, so we have to fight for them.” Erin gathered information about 26 CHKD kids she knew through family, friends, and friends of friends, and received permission to tell their stories on her Miles for Smiles website. Then, she began sharing her campaign through social media. Within a week, her supporters pledged $5,000. By race day, she exceeded her goal by $7,000. “I felt like I already won before the race began,” Erin says. “It wasn’t about finishing in under a certain time or beating other runners. What mattered was that I raised $32,812 for CHKD in honor of 26 amazing kids, thanks to my supporters.” Erin coordinated the funds to be donated through Howard Hanna’s Children’s Free Care Fund, where CHKD would receive every penny. She attributes much of the fundraiser’s success to her J&A Racing team, which helped her spread the word and train hard. “I always said there’s no way I would run a marathon,” says Erin. “But thinking about these kids helped me push through to the finish line. If they can go through these medical challenges, then I can run 26 miles.”

Volunteers

Honoring CHKD Volunteers In 2017, 817 dedicated volunteers contributed 27,801 hours to support the children of CHKD – an estimated monetary equivalent of $749,515 (calculated using the 2016 Independent Sector average hourly value of volunteer time in Virginia). The Buddy Brigade pet therapy program continues to be a favorite with the patients, providing over 12,300 meaningful interactions with patients and visitors last year. This program allows certified pet therapy dogs to comfort patients in the hospital and the child abuse program. Interested donors can learn more about sponsoring a Buddy Brigade dog at CHKD.org/AdoptABuddy.

CHKD boasts one of Virginia’s largest hospital teen volunteer programs with 240 high school students participating as summer Junior Volunteers. Learn more at CHKD.org/JrVolunteer or visit the CHKD Junior Volunteers Facebook page. Many volunteers reached milestone award levels in 2017, and we extend a special thank you to everyone who donated time to help the kids. To learn more about getting involved, please call (757) 668-7195 or visit CHKD.org/Volunteer.

Philanthropy Matters | Donor Event

BLOOMING WITH GRATITUDE

Celebrating those who support Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters CHKD hosted two events this year to honor donors who gave an annual contribution of $1,000 or more. The groups gathered at the Ford’s Colony Country Club in Williamsburg and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club in Norfolk. During each celebration, patients and families shared personal stories about how donor-supported services and care helped them battle mental health issues.

Philanthropy Matters | Making a Difference

Making a Difference Individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the community hold campaigns to support the children at CHKD. Here’s a look at some of our all-star supporters.

Matt Manock of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (left) buys a refreshing cup of lemonade at the hospital’s LemonAid stand, hosted by CHKD cancer patients and their families. More than 785 stands popped up across Hampton Roads for this year’s Anthem LemonAid fundraiser, raising over $92,000 for kids being treated in CHKD’s cancer program.

Jersey Mike’s Subs raised $58,600 for CHKD during its eighth annual Month of Giving campaign. The highlight of the month was their Day of Giving on March 28 when 100 percent of all sales were donated to CHKD. Megan Brock, Lauren Kiger of CHKD, Michael Stemler, Clark Stallings, and Martin Anderson celebrate at Jersey Mike’s in Greenbrier; the 11 locations in Hampton Roads raised more funds than any other region in Virginia.

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters

The King’s Daughters, our founding organization, recently presented their 2018 donation of $700,000 to CHKD CEO and President Jim Dahling (center). The King’s Daughters pledged $1 million to support CHKD’s mental health initiative, and $500,000 of this gift will go toward that pledge. Pictured here with Dahling are past presidents of The King’s Daughters (back, from left) Betty Harmon Edwards, Barbara Lipskis, Beth Johnson, Sherry Lieberman, (front, from left) Eleanor “Sugar” Bradshaw, Julie Childress Beck, and Elly Smith.

Bank of America supports the social work and mental health services of General Academic Pediatrics at CHKD with a $10,000 donation. Shown here are Stephanie Osler, director of mental health services at CHKD; Lynne Mallory Winter, former chair of Children’s Health Foundation; Charlie Henderson, market president at Bank of America and chair of Children’s Health Foundation; and Karen Watkins of CHKD.

CHKD ambassador Natalie Westnedge celebrates Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day at the Landstown location with her favorite indulgence. On August 2, $1 from every Blizzard sold at area locations went directly to CHKD. Local DQs have raised over $56,000 for the kids at CHKD this year from their Miracle Treat Day and Free Cone Day events, plus a Children’s Miracle Network balloon campaign and a round-up campaign.

CHKD ambassador Ansley Johnson (pictured here in a backward hat) and her family represented CHKD at this year’s ABNB Fishing Fest, where they fared the weather and hooked one small fish in rough seas. ABNB’s 2018 gift to CHKD totaled more than $100,000, which includes funds from the Fishing Fest, a golf tournament, and a food truck event.

The Dolphin Circle raised $12,000 for CHKD’s mental health program at its second annual Kentucky Derby Party fundraiser. Karen Whalen; Stephanie Osler, director of mental health services at CHKD; Cindy Gooch; and Gini Deets present the gift.

On Thursday afternoons since March, the pink Twisted Sisters Cupcakes van has been parking at the entrance of CHKD’s main hospital and selling sweet treats to benefit the kids at CHKD. Twisted Sisters donates $1 from every special CHKD mermaid cupcake sold, and 15 percent of all other sales, totaling more than $2,800 to date.
