ILLUSTRATION

1.

"I think it’s an expressive subject that can be linked to how you express yourself and your own style through drawings. Certain line drawings are examples of how line in particular can be expressive by the way the lines are drawn, if they’re hard lines or scribbles that shows anger and frustration. If lines flow and are soft they emit a calm expression.

2. To me illustration means

having the ability to convert my thoughts and feeling onto paper so that others are able to tell how I was feeling or thinking about at the time I was drawing it. 3. Whenever I spot an illustration I like, my thoughts are directed to who the artist is and what other work they have produces? Also I think about the meaning behind it and what techniques they've used.

4. Tracey Emin, Picasso

"I think so. The emotion is in what they draw and what colours and lines they use.

2. It means getting my

ideas and what I want to say expressed however I want in whatever form I want. I do it so I can make my ideas relate to how I’m feeling.

3. When I see a picture I take

inspiration from it and think about how I can be that good. I’ll probably take a picture of it as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY

1.

“I think it expresses emotion by the way the photograph is taken. Your own ideas and thoughts go into your photographs, which make them personal, like photography is an extension of your emotions.

2. Photography to me is an

exciting personal adventure, showing the world what you see through your eyes. I do it, as I like being able to photograph moments that someone else hasn't noticed or seen.

3. My first thoughts are

appreciation and awe, followed by contentment.

4. My top three inspirations are Helmut Newton, Rankin and Nick Knight.

5. I do think photography is

a type of communication as it shows what ideas you've had in a physical form, where you don't need words to explain what your thinking, you just show them!” Source: Bianca Valantine Commercial photography

1.

"For me emotion in a photograph is one of the most important aspects of an image. It allows the viewer to connect with the piece. Emotion can be expressed technically through a photo, for example the amount of light in an image would depict whether the emotion more negative or positive; such as for despair, the image would most likely be darker. Other technical aspects such as focus, composition and colour would also impact the emotion expressed in a picture.

2. Photography is my way of

capturing what I would otherwise miss. I constantly have my camera on me, always looking out for an opportunity to permanence a moment. I use it as an escape like if I need to get away, out comes my film camera and off I go to a secluded area and I capture what I see.

3. Usually my first thought is “when can I be that good?” After that I tend to go very technical; I analyse how it was made, the composition,

the use of focus all the technical traits. I usually end my thought process with the emotive or conceptual side of things.

4. My granddad, I wouldn’t

be at AUB doing this photography degree today if I hadn't seen his work. Jeff Wall with his intricate attention to detail and concepts behind his work and Richard Avedon, a famous portrait photographer.

5. Definitely! This sort of links

back to the emotion question, you can often gauge the emotion of an image from what it looks like and therefore communicate with the viewer. Without wanting to contradict myself from when I said that people might interpret an image differently. There is a difference between understanding what the photographer is trying to communicate and what the piece may mean/say to you." Source: Alice Conway Commercial photography

“It takes me straight back to that moment, I remember exactly how I felt at the time, which song I was into and where I was in the world. The photos make miss that time and get me emotional.“ N.H

“Nostalgia, sometimes it's a sad feeling. Bittersweet feelings like being happy and sad at once. Some hold bad memories but they happened for a reason..“ M.H

Print based on an edited photo taken in a club due to the light display, lasers and sea of people. The crystal resembles being alongside my college friend Krystal who made sure we didn't leave until ten the next morning.

This photograph was taken along the beach in Playa 'den Bossa. I chose to illustrate the sun and rose because it resembles the tattoos that a friend and I got after making a snap decision whilst laying on the beach.

This collaboration reflects forming a bond and connection to a friend and resulted in an overwhelming feeling of friendship and happiness within your surroundings.

The photo reminded me of where I was and the people I met. The bent cigarettes represent the different cultures and diverse people I spoke to outside the building from having the opportunity to talk and meet others.

This image was taken using an underwater camera. The fact that this was underwater explains the illustration of an iceberg like drawing symbolising discovering something that lies beneath the surface. In this case, finding that you like yourself more than you initially thought due to being in different surroundings and situations you wouldn't usually find yourself in. You like yourself more because of this new discovery.

How does looking at photos from the past effect you emotionally & why do you feel this way?

“It depends on the photos because they’re all a reminder of how immature I was. I’m glad that I’ve grown up.”

“Past photos remind me of the good experiences I’ve had. Certain photos takes with a friend I‘ve drifted apart from or an ex hold a sting.”

“It takes me straight back to that moment, I remember exactly how I felt at the time, which song I was into and where I was in the world. The photos make miss that time and get me emotional.”

“They make me wish that I could go back. Ultimately they make me happy but slightly sad due to what I used to look like.”

“Genuinely happy but I miss those days. The photos are a reminder of those days. I feel nostalgia and sadness.” “My feelings change based on what memories the photos hold. Some make me cringe and others make me want to go back. At times I feel envious but fond of them.” “When someone in the photos has died or got ill it makes me wish I could go back and re-live that moment.”

“Nostalgia, sometimes it’s a sad feeling. Bittersweet feelings like being happy and sad at once. Some hold bad memories but they happened for a reason.” “I enjoy the photos, life was better. I’m sad I’m not as young though. Happy to have loved and lost and glad that it’s all happened although I wouldn’t want to repeat what happened.” “I feel embarrassed. The majority of the things I did then I wouldn’t re-enact.”

The faces are stylised illustrations of my friends and the people we met looking like total messes while on the beach watching the sun come up straight after leaving a club.

EDITORS LETTER

Thanks for reading No Bad Daze zine. This is basically what's going on inside my brain spilled out onto pretty paper and assembled to not look like a total mess. This publication was created to reflect the emotions that a photograph holds and illustrating what was happening at that time in an abstract and contemporary manner. While producing this a lot of past experiences that I thought I'd forgotten arose and emitted a nostalgic essence. By having conversations with my dad and him opening up to me about his past experiences allowed me to understand his perspective and meaning behind images he took during his twenties. This inspired me to interpret and collaboratively transform illustration, photography and emotions into one using my own images and personal experiences.

Having gone through some photos taken in the summer I expressed my thoughts in an illustrative and written form. Whatever it reminded me of I drew. The stills I captured were ones that had a positive memory yet varied in feelings of happiness. The prints and visuals reflect what I experienced at that time and the meaning behind the photos. The overall message of NBD is to not dwell on the past unless you’re focusing on positive experiences, inspired by one of my favourite quotes "Don't look back unless it's a good view".
