ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO CH’NG XING YUE | 2013 - 2015

Meaningful architecture is a luxury. It is a luxury because it cannot be accessed by many. It is a luxury because expensive building do not equate good design. How often in our lives have we encountered buildings that were built with little regards of their users or bland in quality?

Ch’ng Xing Yue BSc (Hons) Architecture Taylor’s University 016 338 7283 xingyue.chng@gmail.com

As a kid, I have always loved being outdoors. Years of hiking has contributed to my appreciation for elements in Nature ─ listening to the chirping of birds, the soothing flow of streams, and watching the light pouring through the tree canopies into the forest ground. It made me realized moments in a journey affect one’s experience of it. Thus the compilation of my life’s journey has deeply influenced my desire to create buildings that exceed physical form and exude beauty through spatial experiences. Because most often these are places people spend large portions of their lives eating, sleeping, working, and contemplating. I aspire to make a change so that meaningful architecture will be accessible to more of the population. Real luxury doesn’t have to be extravagant in the way it’s built, it can be a simple space filled with light and volume; a place people enjoy being there. Hence I believe in ways of creating architecture for all by integrating vernacular architecture with innovative approaches, making it sustainable and contributing to the wellness of users. I wish to leave a legacy by positively impacting others through their experiences in the creation of my architecture, in hope that the good will be passed on to others. One droplet might seems small, but it can create a ripple effect larger than it is.

UNITY PROJECT DESCRIPTION Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) Labrador National Park, Singapore 450m2 A significant war battle site built by the British government in the early 20th century, to defend Singapore from the Japanese forces. It is currently used as a nature reserve.

SITE MAP NTS Inspired by the growth of tree from the center of the gun emplacement found on site, this VIC carries the concept of the war uniting Singaporeans, towards their vision for the country. The stairs welcome visitors from main paths to the core of the VIC, where memorial columns surround a big void, representing the war causing sacrifices yet brings unity. The woven wooden roof beams also resembles the intersecting of lives of the people drawing to the core of the VIC and being united. The lookout path extended to the sea offers a change from the dense forest setting to a clear space, signifying the transition from the past to the future.

To redefine what is market in Chow Kit, Bezaar Chow Kit is consisted of mixed primary uses such as market, dining area, reading space and public space, while operating day and night. Public reading space is created due to lack of public library and bookstore in the area, providing educational space especially for the street kids. The reading space uses the old shop house interior to create a nostalgic sense, with the light penetrating through the gaps of the timber louvered windows.

CHOW KIT MARKET

MARKET FLOW

Public space is merged with other spaces to make the market seems less formal, as it is designed to be an everyday market for the community and the tourists. The informality of the market is to induce social interactions between users, making the market vibrant. Different leveling and spaces are designed to create exciting experience making people wanting to revisit again.

The façade of Bezaar Chow Kit contrasts with the surrounding shop houses but the height itself does not overpower. Bezaar Chow Kit is not solely a market, but aims to be a gathering hub for the community to learn and thrive.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” The proposed programme is Collaborative Upcycle Center with an urban park. The center intends to engage all in the community through art, interactive activities and public green spaces. Weekly materials collection, learning workshops and communal projects create the opportunity for the community to come together and collaborate with each other, the artists, and specialists, locally or internationally. As the area is consisted of commercial and residential districts, the amount of urban wastes is immense. This creates an opportunity as the discarded materials can now be reused again with the uprise of awareness for going green. It allows the community to understand the value of trash and the witness the creative transformation into something useful. The center aims to achieve its objective as a community center by acting as a sharing, learning and expression platform for the diverse local community.
