2014 iNSPiRaTiON iNSPi aTiON Creative Freedom
We can only be truly creative when we are free. This is why creative juices seem to run so freely when we travel. This winter we decided to test this theory by spending two months in Peru getting inspired not only by the children, but also by the rich textile tradition, the colourful culture, the vibrant markets and the diverse landscape and imagery of Peru. During this two month period we hosted multiple creative workshops with the kids at the Mundo de niños, allowing us to better understand their situation and teach them new artistic techniques, allowing them to grow on a creative level. Together we managed to create some truly inspiring artworks. During our stay we also had the honour of spending time with the local farmers of Peru’s finest organic cotton. We learned about the ancient techniques they use, enabling them to avoid the need for harmful chemicals, thereby reducing environmental pollution, avoiding harm to workers, and protecting the land’s productivity.

Manufacturing Partner To be a truly ethical brand, we also need to consider our impact on the environment and the people that produce our clothing. for this reason, we have teamed up with Bergman/rivera, the natural choice when it comes to sustainable and safe manufacturing in Peru. Like us, stephan Bergman is committed to giving back to the Peruvian people. he does this by providing work and supporting the age-old manufacturing tradition that is so renowned around the world. stephan chose this direction long before it became a trend. “Berman Rivera is the first company in Latin America that is fully certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (G.O.T.S), from field to garment. This certification guarantees not only the traceability of the organic cotton, but also fair labour standards, the sustainability of all the products used, and respect for the environment - stephan Bergman

MuNdO dE NiNOS choclo is an ancient Peruvian version of corn, a staple food for Peru’s people from before the days of the Incas. The name “choclo Project” represents the collaboration with the Peruvian children and our efforts to nourish their creativity. each season choclo Project carefully chooses a children’s charity with a project that needs financing. In Peru childhood is one of the most vulnerable and unprotected periods in life. Two thirds of children under the age of 5 live in poverty and 2 out of 10 live in extreme poverty. Many of these children and adolescents end up living in the streets where they are exposed to drugs, alcohol and crime. Mundo de niños (established 2001) in huanchaco, offers street children a healthy environment to help the process of re-socialization. The child’s integration into life in the home is helped by the multidisciplinary team: teachers, psychologists, social workers and also by teacher workshops and a varied program of activities. at this stage it is also very important to stabilize the child and keep him away from drugs (for those with an addiction). after stability has been achieved the children begin to make contact with the outside world by returning to school. Depending on their progress they also begin technical training. at this stage the children discover their academic, working and creative potential. assisting them to find their motivation for change, drives the process of stabilization and integration at the centre. Our goal for the 2014 collection is to be able to finance a year’s schooling for the 18 children of Mundo de Niños.

“What I like the most about this project, aside from the potential funding it brings to the centres, is the sense of importance and achievement it brings to the children. The drawings that they love to do now have value and purpose. When the children see what has been made from their drawings they feel special and this is the best feeling a child can have“. andreas clamer - founder of Mundo de niños.

irvin, the artiste Irvin is one of the older children at Mundo de niùos (aged 15) and has become a role model and big brother to the younger kids, a responsibility he carries well. Irvin was forced to work and live in the streets because his family couldn’t afford to feed him and his siblings. he has recently re-joined his family equipped with an education and skills that will enable him to help support his family. This drawing was inspired by traditional Peruvian patterns, something that Irvin is very proud of.

ivan, the artiste Ivan (age 12) ran away from his parents at an early age and fended for himself on the hostile streets of Trujillo - begging, selling and doing what was necessary to survive. after hearing about Mundo de ni単os he voluntarily checked himself in. he is one of the most switched on kids we have met and he embraces any opportunity to learn. his survival instincts, acquired on the streets, ensure he will make something of his life given the chance. This artwork was created in a paper cut workshop.

SuRFBOaRd aRT La Tabla (surfboard) was a spontaneous project that proved to be one of the most fruitful of our trip. after arriving in the surf town of huanchaco, just around the corner from chicama (one of world’s most famous left-handers), number one on my list was to get myself a surfboard. But not just any board however. It had to be locally made and tagged by the kids. When I took the brand new board, fresh out of the yenth ccorca’s shaping bay to the kids they were bursting with excitement. not only because we believed in them enough to allow them to draw on an object of considerable value, but also because Lucie had done her artwork on the other side of the board, and they loved it. The kids were totally absorbed and focused and the result was amazing. and I had a board that would do justice to this amazing experience and the incredible waves I was about to surf. even more importantly we had the perfect ethnic graphic that would feed our men’s T-shirt collection. If you want to see the kids in action check out the making of video created by Lucie francois https://vimeo.com/57280079

aMaNTaNi Collaboration amantani is a charity working to bridge the gap between home and school for children living in ccorca; a small Quechuan district nestled high in the andes of southern Peru. amantani’s Boarding houses help 66 children who previously walked up to 8 hours daily to reach school. We are very proud to team up with amantani to produce a capsule collection of T-shirts. These T-shirts feature photos taken by the children in their program using disposable cameras. These photos have been exhibited in the uK receiving great reviews, illustrating that giving a child creative freedom will result in them surprising you. To find out more visit amantani.org.uk

COllECTORS EdiTiON since choclo Project started in 2009, we have been contacted by many artists keen to participate and donate their talent to the project. as a result, we created the collector’s edition. We allow the artists to choose the children’s drawing that touches them most, and they then use this as inspiration for their own artwork which becomes the graphics on these special pieces.

El Ponchito el Ponchito (little poncho) captures everything the choclo Project represents. In the times of the noble Incas, the state provided every member of the community with a poncho (or uncu as it was known). This sleeveless piece of fabric has survived the test of time and still claims its place as a simple yet surprisingly useful garment. not only can it be used as an item of clothing, but also as a blanket (great for shavasana after yoga class or after a chilly surf session), and as decoration. The graphic pattern on this stunning poncho was created by Irvin (one of the children at Mundo de ni単os). Before entering the program Irvin lived in the unpredictable streets of Trujillo, doing his best to survive. he now has a home, an education and a bright and colourful future. and he has a lot of talent which, if nurtured, could take him far. This garment was produced in Peru using Pima organic cotton (the highest quality cotton available), grown by Peruvian farmers in the chincha valley. They fix their own prices, manage their own businesses and own their land. our manufacturer, Bergman/rivera, has donated farming equipment and has offered free eye testing to these farmers and their families who often suffer from the negative effects of long hours in the sun.
