HISTORY IN THE MAKING

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, often called “UNC” or “Carolina,” was chartered in 1789. The cornerstone to the nation’s first state university building, Old East, was laid on October 12, 1793. The university opened its doors for students in 1795 making it the only public university in the U.S. that awarded degrees to students in the 18th century. Wander the campus and see the familiar stone walls and tree-filled green grassy quads. The nation’s first public university, UNC ranks among the world’s leading research universities. Committed to making its highquality education accessible and affordable, UNC-Chapel Hill has ranked as a top five national public university for 23 straight years according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” rankings.

cidery & vineyards

In northern Orange County you can visit the South’s only natural cidery – the first producer of Petillant Natural ciders – crafting real Southern ciders, fruited sours and wines with local, sustainable and organic fruits. At BOTANIST AND BARREL at 105 Persimmon Hill Ln, Cedar Grove, book your guided tastings and tour online. Enjoy food trucks, music, special events, and more. During the summer pick your own naturally grown blueberries at Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm. botanistandbarrel.com and cedargroveblueberry.com

IIn central Orange County, take a Regenerative Farm and Vineyard Tour at UNION GROVE FARM and see how the vineyard operates using holistic regenerative practices to grow healthy thin-skinned seedless muscadine table grapes and build the soil for future generations. Meet their 400 Katahdin sheep and take a Sheep Herding Experience during their pasture rotations and see Sophie, their herding dog in action. Grab an early morning coffee at Blue Heeler Coffee. uniongrovefarm.com
