REASONS FOR SENIORS TO STRENGTH TRAIN Increase Metabolism Muscle is a very active tissue and therefore requires a great deal of calories in three critical ways. First, it burns a great deal of calories during strength training. Second, it continues to burn a lot of calories after the strength training session is over. Third, it burns a significant number of calories when the body is at rest.

For these three reasons, adding more muscle to the body means increasing metabolism. This is especially critical as we age because metabolism gradually slows down the older we get. For young adults and middle-aged people, it is necessary to strength train 3 times per week to experience maximum benefits. However, seniors can expect to reap great rewards from lifting weights only 2 times per week.

Increase Functional Capacity This is the name of the game when it comes to maintaining an active lifestyle and living independently as long as possible. These are two of the most important things that most seniors desire. Maintaining functional capacity is much more easily achieved when seniors strength train.

Disease Management and Prevention Incorporating strength training into the lifestyles of seniors is critical to ensuring that this dream can be realized for them. It is proven that as we get into our later years, if we do not strength train we will lose a great deal of our muscle mass. Strength training twice per week can help seniors to not only maintain their muscle, but gain muscle.

Decrease Body Fat A decrease in body fat comes as a consequence of increased metabolism. This decrease in body fat can help ease the load of the amount of work the joints have to do which will contribute to more years with a higher quality of life and less pain.

This drop in body fat can also help with other chronic diseases that many seniors suffer from. Maintaining a healthy weight contributes to better blood sugar control in diabetes. It also helps reduce the risk of developing cancer and heart disease, the two most common causes of death in the United States today. Decrease Lower Back Pain Studies have attributed high incidences of low back pain with the low rate of core body strength in many individuals. The core is made up of the muscles in the lower back, abdominal muscles, and internal and external obliques on the sides of the body. For these reasons, it’s important that increasing core strength is a goal of the senior’s strength training program. Page 4

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES

10 The way workers view retirement has changed over the years, with many former workers expressing a strong desire to stay active. The lack of engagement that follows an abrupt retirement can have serious and highly negative consequences, from boredom and family conflict, to financial uncertainty, and even weight gain due to inactivity. As a result, many recent retirees end up looking for part-time jobs, not only to make ends meet but to feel productive & stay active. Whether you are already in retirement or just dreaming about what your post-work life will be like, check out these retirement-friendly part-time gigs.

In-Home Health Care and Companionship Not all retirees are lucky enough to remain healthy; disability and health problems plague many in the senior community. Helping out with in-home health care and companionship gives retirees a solid part-time income but also the chance to make a difference in the lives of their peers. The qualifications for these positions varies widely, giving many retirees a chance to help out in the local community. Some jobs require a medical background, but anyone with a caring heart and a couple of extra hours can provide companionship to lonely seniors or shopping services to their older neighbors.

Retail Positions The retail industry is filled with recent retirees, and getting a job at a bustling mall or busy store can be a wonderful experience. Many retirees enjoy helping out during the holiday season in particular, watching the smiles of children and helping parents find the perfect gifts for the little ones in their lives. Even when the holiday season is over, many retirees find themselves staying on, hired on a permanent basis to stock shelves, man cash registers and keep the stores running. If you are a people person, a part-time post-retirement career in retail could be the perfect solution.

Event Staff Do you love the beauty and engagement of live theater? Do you long to attend the best concerts at local venues? If so, why not skip the ticket line and get paid in the process? Ushers, ticket sellers and other event staff get to attend concerts, plays and other cultural activities, giving active and culturally-minded retirees a double benefit. If you want to enjoy the activities you love and get paid in the process, signing up with an event agency could be just the thing.

Delivery Driver Retirees who love to drive should consider the many delivery service options that are now available. Whether they deliver groceries for their busy neighbors, dry cleaning for time-starved office workers or packages for the legions of online shoppers, they can enjoy quality time behind the wheel and engage with other people in the process. If you want to engage even more closely, you can sign up to drive people instead of packages. Ride share services like Uber and Lyft are great choices, as are smaller startups in many parts of the country. Retirement does not have to be an ending. In fact, many older workers find that retirement is simply the start of a new phase in their lives. Whether you need the extra income or not, finding a part-time job in retirement can be a satisfying and engaging experience. If you are happily retired but still want to stay active, working part-time in retirement can help you strike the perfect balance. Working in retirement is quickly becoming the norm, and not just out of economic necessity. Even if you do not need the cash, taking a part-time job could be very enriching.

BACK TO WORK AFTER RETIREMENT Many individuals are choosing to re-enter the workforce after retiring from their primary careers. Whether out of economic necessity, a desire to remain active, or to pursue alternate career paths, it’s a fact that many individuals are staying in the workforce well past the traditional retirement age. Opportunities Are Plentiful For Mature Workers

require up-to-date basic computer skills. This is an easily overcome challenge, as there are a number of senior vocational training opportunities for individuals who need to learn the basics of how to use a computer. For example, most communities have training centers that offer computer classes appropriate for mature workers.

If you’re thinking about pursuing a post-retirement career, it’s a good idea to spend some time thinking about the type of work you want to do during your senior years. While some retirees choose to go back to their original occupations on a part-time basis, many others choose to pursue a completely different direction. Many retirees find they can turn lifelong hobbies, such as crafting, cooking, and art, into post-retirement career opportunities.

Individuals who have basic computer skills can even take advantage of online training opportunities to get the skills they need to return to work. Retirees who take the time to brush up their computer skills can take advantage of fun and exciting employment opportunities in a wide variety of occupations.

The good news is that there are more opportunities for retirees who wish to return to the workforce now than ever before. Employers are recognizing the value of structuring jobs so they appeal to senior workers, so there is increasing availability of jobs with schedules and responsibilities that appeal to mature workers. Many companies are offering flexible working schedules, as well as opportunities for telecommuting. Home-based and direct sales business opportunities also appeal to many mature individuals.

Ready to Return to Work?

If you’re ready to take the step toward pursuing a post-retirement career, the first step is making sure you have the computer skills you will need to succeed in today’s workplace. The second step is to craft a resume that will help you pitch your unique skills and qualifications to employers in your area. You’re likely to be pleasantly surprised to find out just how many wonderful opportunities there are to combine a retirement lifestyle with a new career.

Computer Training Opportunities for Seniors

One challenge that many retirees face when reentering the workforce is the fact that most jobs do

10 SUMMER SAFETY TIPS FOR ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBERS

833-967-2613

HavenAtLewisvilleLake.com

The summer season is often the best time of year, but for elderly loved ones, the hot weather and unrelenting humidity pose a real health hazard. If you have elderly family members in your life, you need to do your part to keep them safe in the summer heat.

Keeping elderly loved ones safe in the hot summer months is about more than air conditioning and a good fan. There are additional hazards this time of year, many of them unrelated to the outdoor temperature. Here are ten timely tips to keep your elderly loved ones protected all season long.

1. Keep the bug spray handy. Insects are particularly active in the summer heat, including ticks, flies, and mosquitoes, some of which harbor serious diseases. Keep your home stocked with bug spray, and make sure visiting family members know where to find it. 2. Consider hiring a lawn service or landscape company for outdoor maintenance. Mowing the lawn and weeding the garden can be sweaty work, and all that exertion puts seniors at special risk. If your elderly relatives need help with these activities, the gift of lawn care could be very well received.

3. Focus on hydration. It is important for everyone to stay hydrated in the summer heat, but elderly men and women may need to drink more water. Make sure you have plenty of water available and monitor fluid intake for elderly family members who live in your home. 4. Encourage older family members to wear their sunglasses. Eye protection is vital for seniors, as good vision could mean the difference between continued driving and a sense of independence and the loss of their driver’s license. Proper sun protection is an important part of preserving vision, so keep those shades handy. 5. Slather on the sunscreen. Oder people sometimes forget to reapply their sunscreen, so make sure you have a tube close at hand. Encourage your elderly loved ones to reapply their sun protection regularly throughout the day, even when conditions are cloudy.

6. Watch the weather forecast. Driving in sudden downpours and navigating through thunderstorms can be particularly tricky for older drivers, so keep an eye on the weather forecast. If they can, encourage elderly loved ones to postpone running errands when the weather is unsettled or threatening. 7. Encourage appropriately cool clothing. Raised in a different and perhaps more modest era, some seniors are reluctant to dress in summer attire. Encouraging your loved ones to wear shorts and dress in light colors is important to keeping them cool and safe in the summer heat.

8. Check on elderly family members who do not live with you. It is easy to watch for warning signs when your loved ones live with you, but what about seniors who live far away? If the people you care about do not live under your roof, ask friends and family members to check in regularly when the hot weather strikes. 9. Watch for signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The early warning signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion are often mistaken for normal aging, so monitor your loved ones carefully. Clammy skin, dizziness, and confusion should always be taken seriously, so keep your eyes open and be prepared to take action. 10. Practice water safety. Staying safe on the water is important for young and old alike, so monitor elderly loved ones whenever they are near the pool. Keep flotation devices nearby, make sure everyone knows how to swim and keep close tabs on older swimmers, who may lack the stamina of their younger counterparts.

Summer safety is important no matter what your age, but staying safe in the summer heat can be particularly challenging for older people. If you have elderly loved ones, it is important to watch them closely this time of year. From monitoring for signs of heat stroke to limiting where & when they drive, a few simple precautions can go a long way.

ASSISTED LIVING DEVICES Every Senior Should Consider

The vast majority of senior citizens say they want to age in place. They want to live in their own homes and be surrounded by their own familiar things as they get older. They do not want to move in with relatives, enter an assisted living facility or go into a nursing home.

The good news is that people are living longer than ever before, and medical advances have allowed active seniors to live richer and more fulfilling lives. On the other hand, those increases in longevity can mean seniors need additional help to stay in their homes and live more independent lives. Whether you are a senior yourself or caring for an older relative, there are a number of assistive devices that could make your life easier and allow you to maintain a more independent lifestyle. Whether you suffer from a disability or just find yourself slowing down as you get older, these assistive devices can be a big help. Assistive Devices for the Bathroom

The bathroom can present a particular challenge for active seniors, and falls in the bathroom are more common for this age group. Even if you are not currently having problems, it is a good idea to add a few assistive devices to the bathroom.

Perhaps the simplest of these assistive devices is a sturdy toilet frame. The frame is designed to fit directly over the existing toilet, so no plumbing work will be required. The frame simply makes it easier to lower yourself on to the toilet and rise back off, reducing the risk of a fall and keeping you safer in the bathroom.

You may also want to consider installing grab bars in your tub or shower enclosure. Getting in and out of the tub can become more difficult as you age, and joint problems can increase the risk of falls. Grab bars are easy to install, and again no plumbing work is required. Other Assistive Devices for Seniors

The bathroom is not the only place senior citizens may need help. If you find it difficult to get in and out of a traditional recliner, replacing that chair with one that lowers and

raises with the touch of a button could vastly improve your life, keep you safe and allow you to maintain your independence.

If you have a multi-story home, a chair lift can be an excellent investment. With the simple push of a button, you can regain access to the upper floors of your home and get around more easily.

When it comes to the bedroom, a simple bed frame can be a great choice. Installing bed rails can make getting in and out of bed safer and more comfortable. These rails are simple to install and easy to use, making them perfect for seniors who live on their own.

If a bed frame is not enough, you can always replace your traditional bed with an adjustable model. These beds allow you to raise and lower the head and foot portions, improving your sleep and making you more comfortable.

The right assistive devices can make a huge difference in your quality of life. Getting older does not have to mean losing your independence or compromising your safety. With the right assistive devices, you can retrofit the home you love and stay there safely as you age.
