veryone has heard of Diabetes, but have you heard of prediabetes? It is a real thing and at epidemic proportion in this country.

According to the Centers for Disease Control 2020, National Diabetes Statistics Report, and the JAMA Pediatrics…. • 88 MILLION people in the US are living with prediabetes • 24.2 million are age 65 and older • 1 in 3 adults, 1 in 5 adolescents, 1 in 4 young adults are affected • 8 out of 10 are unaware • 2 in 5 will develop Type 2 Diabetes in their lifetime

The question is what is Prediabetes, and COULD IT BE YOU??

Prediabetes is a disease of insulin resistance, a term you may or may not have heard before, but one that has been linked to a multitude of serious health conditions. Obesity appears to be the main cause of insulin resistance.

Insulin is a hormone produced in specialized cells located in the pancreas called beta cells. It is the “key” that unlocks the door in your muscles, fat and liver cells for sugar to enter and be used for energy regulating blood sugar. When the cells are unable to respond normally to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance develops increasing risks of chronic complications from blood vessel, nerve and organ damage.

Insulin resistance does not happen suddenly, instead it develops over time. Your blood sugar becomes elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed with Diabetes. This condition is known as prediabetes and can lead to Type 2 Diabetes and its associated serious, often life-threatening complications.

Insulin resistance has no symptoms and may not be diagnosed until a person presents with one of these complications such as eye, kidney, or nerve disease, possibly even a heart attack or stroke. Because of this you may be at risk or have insulin resistance right now and not even know it.

It is critical to know your risk factors, be screened, tested and then to act today to prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Research shows that TWO simple, proven, lifestyle changes can lower risks of developing Type 2 Diabetes by 58% and for those over age 60 by 71%. Here are the risk factors:

* Family history of Diabetes (parent or sibling) * Over age 45 * African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander * Overweight/Obese

* Sedentary * History of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart attack or stroke * Gestational Diabetes (Diabetes in pregnancy), gave birth to a baby over 9 pounds, Polycystic Ovarian Disease * Smoking or recently quit Page 6

Screening is simple and can take less than 1-2 minutes. You can do it now. You should do it now! Just visit this link:

https://diabeteskareconsulting.com/diabetes-prevention-for-life-program/

Answer the 7 questions and if you score 5 or higher you likely have prediabetes and are at high risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Call your healthcare provider and get tested. The American Diabetes Association recommends everyone over the age of 45 be tested for Type 2 Diabetes. Earlier testing is recommended for the following people: • Adults of any age, without symptoms, who are overweight or obese and have 1 or more additional risk factors • Women planning pregnancy who are overweight or obese who have 1 or more additional risk factors • Children & adolescents (puberty or older than age 10), without symptoms, who are more than 85-95% on weight charts and have 1 or more additional risk factors

A simple blood test, either a fasting blood sugar or an A1c, is used to diagnose both prediabetes & Type 2 Diabetes. The only difference is the test results. If you have a fasting blood sugar of 100-125 or an A1c of 5.7-6.4% you have prediabetes. If test results are normal, you still need to be tested yearly, more frequent if you have risk factors.

If you are diagnosed with prediabetes, YOU MUST ACT NOW! You will need to be tested at least yearly and have your blood pressure and cholesterol treated if they are elevated. There is GOOD NEWS! Type 2 Diabetes CAN be prevented through simple lifestyle changes we all should be following. The Diabetes Prevention program showed losing 7% of your current body weight through healthy eating and exercise can significantly lower your risks. These changes can also lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and lower your risks of heart disease and stroke as well.

Incorporating healthier eating habits and more exercise into your daily habits does not have to be difficult.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Calculate your 7% weight loss goal

2. Begin to make a few small changes to your diet: • • • •

Eat less calories, processed foods, added sugars, saturated/trans fats Add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, lower fat dairy products in meals/snacks Be mindful of portion sizes – they matter! Use MyPlate to assist you in planning healthier, balanced meals

3. Begin walking at a moderate pace and slowly increase until you reach a goal of 30” 5 days/week • 10” increments 3x/day + same benefit as 30” sessions • If you have been inactive, check with your healthcare provider first • Be safe, make it FUN and social

4. Join a CDC, National Diabetes Prevention Program https://www.mass.gov/service-details/diabetes-prevention-programs-in-massachusetts 5. Find your “Why”, use it to stay motivated and on track

Changing lifestyle habits can be difficult, especially if you have been living a certain way for years. BUT it’s never too late to make a few small changes that will have a significant impact to your future health. You can live a longer, healthier and happier life and prevent Type 2 Diabetes! Start today to change your tomorrows!!
