DAT Engineering Consultancy Various Villa Projects Dubai , United Arab Emirates Relocating to Dubai, DAT offered the experience to get back into architecture by way of project management and conceptual design. The work consisted of villa design for Dubai’s wealthiest and the responsibility of sole project management in a short period. After being entrusted with client contact, valuable experience was gained with coordination with MEP, structural, interior design, etc for projects. These projects included apartment block in Saudi Arabia, and creative freedoms for villas for well-off clients.
Perez Planning + Design Gwinnett Co. Parks Masterplan Gwinnett County, Georgia A brief stint at Perez Planning provided valuable experience with community-based involvement. Various public meetings were conducted in the Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese languages to engage with Gwinnett Country residents. The goal of the outreach was to receive feedback on how to develop and enlarge the county’s parks and recreation system. Efforts were made to engage multi-cultural communities of various socio-economic backgrounds since many of these communities are typically disengaged in the planning process of the community, whether through a difficulty of a language barrier or a general apathy or even mistrust of governmental functions, Perez Planning’s efforts included translating all graphics and documentation into Korean and then locating efforts to Korean groceries and frequented areas in order to engage the people of Gwinnett County. Through surveys, sticker placements, illustrative diagrams, the firm was able to gain valuable insight into what trail and what parks were actually in use and in disuse. With the valuable information, Gwinnett County park system analysis was able to be constructed that worked in line with the demographics studies and usage studies. In this way, Perez Planning served as the mediator between Gwinnett County and its residents by way of informing the true community preferences and to improve park & services accessibility.
Master’s of Urban Design Thesis “Towards hyper-multiculturalism” Georgia Institue of Technology The final semester at Georgia Tech concluded with a final thesis focusing on Atlanta as:
A study to exploring the process to creating a hyper multi-culturally diverse community by means of the nonphysical form through city policies & transportation planning within metropolitan Atlanta
“How to retrieve multiculturalism through a series of policies that I believe can be taken as law and fundamental principles.“ 1. Provide minority language facilities in public consultations 2. Including minority representatives in planning committees 3. Including ethnic/minority community organizations in the planning processes. 4. routinely analyzing ethnic and racial variables in planning analysis. 5. Studies of ethnic enclaves and neighborhoods in transition 6. recognition of ethnic diversity as a planning goal in official plans. 7. Citywide policies for culture-specific institutions in plans (worship, ethnic seniors’ homes, cultural institutions, funeral, fairs) 8. policies/design guidelines for sustaining ethnic neighborhoods 9. Policies / strategies for ethnic commercial areas 10. Incorporating culture/religion as an acceptable reason for site-specific accommodations (ethnic signage, street names, & symbols) 11. Policies for ethnic-specific service needs 12. Policies for immigrants’ special service needs. 13. Policies/projects for ethnic heritage preservation 14. Guidelines for housing to suit diverse groups. 15. Development strategies taking account of inter-cultural needs 16. Promoting and systematizing ethnic entrepreneurship 17. Policies for ethnic art and cultural services. 18. Accommodating ethnic sports “In order to combat gentrification,” 1. Revitalizing programs are guided by the needs of the local population mix. If there are sizeable ethnic groups, provision is made to accommodate their cultural/religious needs. 2. Promote the mixing of low- and middle-income household and de-concentration of disadvantage families living in poor neighborhoods. 3. -Rent subsidies, -Housing Vouchers, or -Homeownership tax credits are the tools used to enable poor families to access housing in middle-income areas, 4. as is infill developments of market housing and businesses to broaden the economic base of deprived neighborhoods. 5. The idea is to reduce the mutually reinforcing effects of concentrated poverty.
