1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Within point line plane, lies the elongation of material to form spatial composition. In Frame and infill, the delicacy and complexity of frame and infill was explored. In Mass the dominating presence was emphasized. The similarity of the tectonics I explored was the changing external forms created by these tectonics and the prominent feature. However, the difference in my models was the varying complexity. With point line and plane I wanted the simplistic nature of an elongated piece. While in frame and infill the complexity of the frame to hide and display infill. In mass, the impression of getting lost and stumbling in darkness. The Final model at Herring Island was formed based on these ideas.

8 FINAL MODEL

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Point Line Plane is the fundamentals of Architectural form. They exist in nearly all forms of architecture. Together, they can form a cohesive dynamic form but individually they can form different and unique elements. A moving point is line, A moving line is a plane and a moving plane is a solid. The movement of these point line plane created the elongation of architectural form. The elements in the main section of the model emphasizes this length. The openness of point line plane was also expressed in this model where the model consisted mostly of open space enclosed by lines.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL Frame and infill shows how a delicate structure can be. It is a stark comparison to weight that mass portrays. Though frame and infill may seem fragile it can be contrasted with its ability to support weight. The frame shows an outline of form and the infill shows the solidity of the form. Often frame and infill structures are complex and varies in form. This began and idea where we can get lost looking within the structure. I took the idea of the complexity of frame on to Herring Island where complexity of the form hides a secret.

1.3 MASS Mass can be created by the extrusion material or the intrusion of mass such as the ground plane. It demonstrates the weight and density of material. Mass creates spatial form and enveloping an area in density. In my drawing, I wanted an experience of an adventure where on stumbles around in the dark feeling and finding his way through. The obstacles created by form restricts and trips the person in the dark. From this, I found that the dominating presence of mass can hide secrets under its weight. I brought forward this idea to Herring Island to form the three planar mass.

THE SURROUNDING SITE

16

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is located towards the eastern side of Melbourne’s CBD. Cut off from large land masses by the Yarra River, Herring Island gives a distinct and contrasting experience from the surrounding site. Venturing in to the idea of secrets, movement, Vegetation, Noise and Topography was analyzed. The area to fit the frame maze needs to isolated quiet and hidden by vegetation and topography. The analysis done also needed to consider herring island on the bigger scale, as the local analysis was often affect by the surrounding regions. The first conceptacle was made through the use of planar forms. In the second conceptacle was the addition of frames to elongate the structure.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

The representation of a journey through secrets from the shared secret to a personal secret, from a public to a private areas. A shared secret is a secret that is known by many but still kept within a group while a personal secret is one that is private and not shared among anyone. The arrangement of the structure was to have a transition from a maze to a labyrinth where the maze was to hold a shared secret while the labyrinth held a personal secret. This labyrinth lies in the ground under three planar masses to show the weight and depth of a personal secret. The maze symbolizes the many dead ends when finding someone’s secret while the labyrinth a straight and direct route of knowing one’s own personal secret. Frame maze was inspired by the Composition of red, yellow and blue. A direct translation from the top. Dominate larger outer frames and a metal wall encloses the maze giving a sense of being trapped.

The exterior of maze is shielded by metal. Metal provides a mild camouflage by reflection. However, the shiny reflect quality also draws interest to the structure like a sparkle among the trees. The Frame maze is built such that a person can seemingly get lost in the complexity of the structure. A time capsule is hidden in the maze, where it is a representation as a shared secret. The Chamber of personal secrets is hidden below ground evolved by mass. Light enters through the three metal planar mass in to concrete light columns which illuminate different vaults of secrets through the day. These vaults are opened to people who share personal secrets at different times during the day. A secret for a secret. When a person shares their secret they will receive a key to another individual’s secret. Within the chamber of lies darkness and mass. The only form of illumination is through the concrete sky lights and the concrete and stone walls portray a grim and dark atmosphere.

4.0 REFLECTION The exploration of the tectonics of architecture was fundamental to my design. Through Design studio Earth, I have learnt that good Designing requires a good foundation various forms of architecture and connection to the site. Through various model making and drawings i have learnt different styles to portray my ideas. My skills of model making and drawings were also up to the task during earth and have improved significantly. I found that early planning and good time management is the key to success. Starting of early will allows the further expansion of ideas and the analysis. Keeping a design journal was also beneficial, it enabled me to see the patterns in my design process and workstyle. A deep and truthful reflection of what worked and what didn’t work also allowed me to trim and shape my workstyle. Preparing material ahead of time also helped to ensure stock when needed. What didn’t work? The lack of sleep and procrastination was detrimental to the design process. Planning ahead was also helpful, however, the improper time allocation to task meant that it was a constant struggle to keep up. Overall Design studio earth, has been a fruitful and memorable experience. I was allowed to express my ideas and forms through my models and drawings. And I ventured out of my comfort zone by using abstract drawing which have always been elusive to me.
