WASHINGTON STATE

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS

DEFINING THE FUTURE OF AVIATION AND SPACE.

COMPELLING REASONS TO CHOOSE WASHINGTON.

For more than a century Washington State has been at the very forefront of designing and building some of the most advanced and successful commercial and military aircraft, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and space exploration vehicles the world has ever seen.

For savvy investors and businesses that want to be part of the state’s robust supply chain, the future is bright. Decades of new orders and new programs ensure a steady supply of work for aerospace companies looking for new opportunities, partners and contracts.

Today, Washington continues to lead the way in the aerospace industry, producing 1,400 aircraft and unmanned aerial systems annually and manufacturing nearly 90% of all commercial aircraft in the United States.

To promote innovation and industry growth, the state offers aerospace companies an array of incentives, including reduced tax credits for preproduction development expenditures and property/leasehold taxes paid, sales and use tax exemptions for computer hardware and software, and construction of new facilities used to manufacture commercial airplanes, fuselages and wings.

The state is anchored by Boeing, which was founded on the shores of Seattle’s Lake Union in 1916. In the ensuing years, the company has turned out tens of thousands of aircraft from its Washington factories, including every 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 ever built and the vast majority of 787 Dreamliners. The next generation 737 MAX and 777X are also being manufactured in Washington. The industry is supported by 1,400 aerospace-related companies that work with every major aircraft manufacturer and air carrier in the world. Together, they employ 136,100 highly skilled workers who are passionate about the work they do. 6

The industry is supported by innovative public-private partnerships such as the Center for Excellence for Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing, Washington Aerospace Training & Research Center and the Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation. An emphasis on training and education ensures a steady stream of highly-trained specialists in avionics, robotics, logistics, production, entertainment systems, interiors and advanced materials.

A BOLD VISION FOR SPACE EXPLORATION. Washington State has played a central role in space exploration for nearly 60 years. Anchored by industry pioneers Boeing and Aerojet, the state has drawn a new generation of visionaries who are redefining space exploration, from mining asteroids and ferrying tourists to the outer reaches of inner space to systems that are taking us to the Moon, Mars and beyond. The state’s unique blend of established and newer companies led Forbes magazine to dub Washington “The Silicon Valley for Space.” Nearly three dozen space-related companies are part of Washington’s space cluster, including such world renowned companies as Aerojet Rocketdyne, Blue Origin, Planetary Resources, SpaceX, Spaceflight Industries and Vulcan Aerospace.

Groundbreaking research and development is driven by two world-class universities, a national research laboratory and private sector R&D teams. Just south of Seattle, Blue Origin is developing its new BE-4 engines that will power the New Glenn and Vulcan launch systems. Aerojet is exploring a new generation of propulsion systems as well, including resistojets, gridded-ion thrusters and hydroxyl ammonium nitrate powered rockets. The increased emphasis on commercialized space has allowed companies like Spaceflight Industries to create new ventures like BlackSky Global, which provides high-resolution, near real-time imagery to customers. SpaceX engineers are working hard on the company’s satellite constellation program and Planetary Resources is refining technologies to explore and mine asteroids.
