Thank you for participating in this ongoing Japan-Washington State collaboration to increase bilateral investment and cooperation on artificial intelligence and other leading-edge technologies. It’s gratifying to see this event enter its third year, and I hope it is an inspiring and productive week for all. Washington State is at the forefront of research into artificial intelligence and machine learning and their applications across multiple industries, so we are pleased to be able to highlight the deep talent and entrepreneurial spirit that our state can offer to help businesses thrive in Washington and in Japan. Washington State is home to one of the most robust ICT sectors in the world. It supports over 220,000 jobs at more than 12,000 companies statewide. Washington is home to world-renowned brands and industry leaders including Amazon, Cray, F5, Inrix, Microsoft, Expedia and Zillow, as well as institutions such as the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the University of Washington, which are on the leading edge of developing artificial intelligence technologies. With a relationship spanning over a century, Japan is one of Washington State’s most valued international partners. Many Japanese companies have already invested heavily in Washington and are actively doing business, and many Washington State firms – both large and small – have successfully established a presence in Japan. Japan is currently Washington’s third largest export market for our goods and services. It took work and commitment to build this close relationship, and that work continues. In June 2018, Washington State and Japan renewed a Memorandum of Cooperation, which signified that, while we share a century of mutual prosperity, our best days are ahead. Both parties remain committed to promoting cooperative research and information exchange with the aim of expanding opportunities for technological and investment partnership in business and industry. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have amazing potential to transform industries and improve lives all over the world. Looking at the groundbreaking advances coming out of Washington State and our partnership with Japan, together we can provide global leadership in these emerging fields. LEADING THE WAY IN AI Washington State is leveraging its historical leadership in information and communication technology (ICT) to create new opportunities for innovation and invention in artificial intelligence and machine learning. AI and machine learning are natural offshoot of the state’s industry-leading expertise in software, hardware, mobile, big data and cloud computing. ICT employment in Washington has grown by 60% between 2011 and 2018 and the number of ICT firms has grown by 76%. Local industry giants – Amazon, T-Mobile and Microsoft – have been joined by mid-tier companies such as Tableau, Concur, Expedia, Apptio, Smartsheet, DocuSign, Zillow, Payscale and F5 Networks. More than 100 U.S. and international firms have opened engineering offices in Washington State, including Facebook, Google, Apple, Splunk, Cray, AT&T and Cisco. Nearly every industry in the state is exploring new ways to integrate AI and machine learning into their product and service lines. Thanks to Washington’s unique culture of collaboration, aerospace, agriculture/food manufacturing, clean technology, life science and maritime companies are partnering with ICT firms to integrate AI into cockpits, control systems, smart-grid technologies, healthcare devices, crop management and production floor operations. It is a dynamic ecosystem where new ideas are shared readily and rapidly to bring new ideas to market quickly. This is particularly true with the Internet of Things. Our market leadership in cloud computing and AI is being used to define how businesses and people connect in the future and reinventing the very idea of manufacturing from the ground up. The same can be said for autonomous vehicles, from drones and delivery vehicles to entire transportation networks that are driven by advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The ICT sector is supported by robust research and development efforts, both in the private sector and state universities. Washington is also headquarters for one of only 10 national research labs in the U.S., the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. PNNL researchers create additional opportunities for innovation in the industry by exploring new concepts in AI, augmented/virtual reality, cloud computing, block chain and quantum computing. Radical new approaches are readily applied to age-old problems, spurring leapfrog advances across the board that redefine entire markets and, on occasion, become cultural icons.
