Washington State Department of Commerce
NEW MATERIALS for A NEW AGE It wasn’t too many years ago that automobiles were built of steel, aircraft of aluminum and boats of teak. Times have certainly changed. Today, composites and other advanced materials, tools and technologies are revolutionizing the marketplace, creating significant opportunities for Washington companies to invent new products that were science fiction just a decade or so ago. Nearly 100 companies throughout Washington are pushing the envelope, producing new products, processes and materials that are changing the world, from recreational equipment and medical devices to security and transportation. From these companies come a wide range of goods, including aircraft structures, guitars, snowboards and bindings, prosthetic limbs, fly rods, race boats, radars, ship hulls, paddles, oars, bikes, racing shells and golf clubs.
SECTOR OVERVIEW
Washington’s advanced manufacturing sector is a $3.3 billion-plus industry. It is anchored by such leading companies as Boeing, BMW Group, Cytec Industries, Electroimpact, Hexcel, Janicki Industries, SGL Group and Toray Composites America. Washington is one of the few places in the United States – if not the world – where the entire supply chain is represented. All stages of advanced manufacturing can be found in Washington, from the carbon thread that’s used to manufacture fiber to automated fiber-placement machines, rapid set autoclaves, robotic systems, molds, prototyping, design and engineering.
Research and development by state universities, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (one of only 10 national labs in the United States) and research arms such as the Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, the Composite Materials & Engineering Center, and the Center for Advanced Materials in Transport Aircraft Structures, continue to shape the future of the advanced materials industry in Washington.
Boeing’s increased use of composites to build lighter, stronger aircraft structures continues to drive growth and innovation in the sector. The company’s next-generation 777X features the largest composite wing ever constructed; so large that the last 11 ½ feet of each wing will fold to clear existing airport gates.
WORKFORCE
To support the industry, Washington State’s educational institutions have created comprehensive STEM education and training programs. Bloomberg has ranked Washington #1 in the percentage of STEM college graduates in the workforce with more than 178,000 graduates employed. They are joined by another 105,000 STEM-related graduates, creating a large pool of experienced, educated employees. Workers anxiously engage in a lifetime of learning in Washington. Nearly 91% of all residents earned at least a high school diploma and 32.3% have earned a bachelor degree or higher. Eleven public and private universities, 29 community colleges, five technical colleges and dozens of vocational institutions offer workers plenty of opportunities to engage in post-secondary or continuing education and training programs that utilize state-of-the-art technology and teach industry-focused coursework.
A COLLABORATIVE ECOSYSTEM
One of the most important aspects of the advanced manufacturing industry in Washington is the close collaboration between companies in different lines of business. Advanced manufacturers can tap into the vast network of software and hardware companies located throughout the state to automate manufacturing processes, create new hull designs with super-yacht builders, or work with a life science start-up to develop a new generation of medical devices. Indeed, the opportunity to invest or expand in Washington has never been better as the advanced manufacturing sector continues to identify new markets, technologies and materials.
