On the Shoulders of Giants BY SUSAN EERNISSE EDITOR OF THE CHORISTER
I recently received a beautiful gift this week from Betsy Henderson. I was introduced to Betsy a few years ago by our mutual friends, Kim Ingram and Heather Olson of Open Heart Musicals. I have enlisted Betsy to write devotionals and articles several times for The Chorister, and I was honored to do some editing on both volumes of Praise Takes Flight. In the process we have become friends. Betsy is a true gift to the world of children's music education. When the little package arrived. I immediately recognized Betsy’s gorgeous handwriting on the envelope and knew something wonderful would be inside. I had no idea how special it would be. It contained a note of explanation from Betsy and a paperback book, copyright 1948, called “The Successful Children's Choir” by Ruth Krehbiel Jacobs. First, I cried – then I took some time to process. A FEW PERSONAL THINKING POINTS: 1. The copyright was a year before Mrs. Jacob's founded CG. Was this the impetus for Choristers Guild's beginning? 2. With people so ready to purge their shelves and reduce clutter, tossing away so many historical artifacts, Betsy trusted me to become the caretaker of this gem that had been entrusted to her from another friend years ago. 3. Choristers Guild was founded by Ruth to enable children’s choir leaders to help children learn to sing and to love and worship God. She was a teacher/choir director/workshop leader/mentor/writer. I share Ruth’s passion for equipping others to be successful in their work. In thanking Betsy, I told her that I stand so humbled on Ruth's (and Betsy’s, and many, many others’) shoulders, her work, her passion, her reputation, her legacy. You (the reader) may not know me personally, but I want you to know that I take my work as editor of The Chorister very seriously. It evolves from the very heart of our founder, the foundation of all that CG represents. I obviously never met Ruth Krehbiel Jacobs, but somehow, I think she and I could have been great friends and colleagues. Be sure to browse through all the excellent resources in this issue. Don’t miss the great feature article by Mark Burrows containing teaching tips for his newest musical from Choristers Guild. May you enjoy a time of rest and refueling this summer!
Keep singing the song!

Sing Together – Often! BY KATIE HOUTS SACRED CHORAL EDITOR
In 2018, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation featured psychology professor Daniel Levitin (McGill University, author of This Is Your Brain on Music) during a program on the science of singing. Research indicates that our brains release the chemical oxytocin when we sing with others. Oxytocin is involved in social bonding, which is one reason why singing together often results in feelings of community, friendship, and fellowship. This summer, I hope you have the chance to peruse your choral packet of new Choristers Guild anthems. Our talented composers continue to capture the heart of the Church in their music - celebrating all that builds and strengthens communities of faith. In this fall choral release, you’ll find anthems fostering love and courage, acceptance and beauty, peace and outreach. Many new pieces offer intentional, memorable opportunities for children and adults to sing together. Begin your season with “Come, Let Us Worship God,” (Makeever, arr. Houts) an easy two-part echo song which extends the invitation to eat, rest, and find hope together as God’s people. A wonderful congregational piece - have your children’s choir lead the Call, and teach the Echo to your adult choir so they can reinforce congregational singing. Benjamin David Knoedler’s “A Beautiful Land” is a wonderful choice for All Saint’s Sunday, painting a lovely picture of the life to come. Feature one or two talented adult soloists, or consider using a children’s choir to sing the soloist’s line. Celebrate an attitude of gratitude with “Thankful,” a new piece by Mark Burrows. This unison/two-part anthem gives thanks for all of God’s gifts - gifts we see and gifts we feel - and incorporates a stanza of “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Your adult choir can easily join the hymn stanza for a combined-choir presentation. A stunning new piece from Mark Miller and Lindy Thompson is an earnest prayer for love. “Show Us How to Love” is a transformative piece for your youth or adult choir. Consider teaching the refrain to even younger choristers. (My four-year-old loves singing along to this piece with me!) Our new offerings for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany are filled with beauty and awe. • One of my favorite new Advent pieces, “Prepare Ye the Way,” contains vivid imagery of the messagebringers who share the good news of “a bright star that turns all our darkness to day: Emmanuel!” – some of Mark Burrows’s best writing. • Trevor Manor’s arrangement of “Silent Night” offers a glimpse into the wonder of that first Christmas Eve. Two voicings provide an opportunity to combine choral forces at Christmas. • Tim Osiek’s arrangement of “When God Is a Child” is a tender and beautiful choice for your adult choir this Advent or Christmas. God’s entrance into the world as a baby gives us reassurance that there is nothing to fear; we are set free to proclaim hope, joy, peace, and love. • Josh Sparkman’s arrangement of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” exudes joy! This Celtic-style setting will enliven your worship or concert and be such fun for any youth or adult choir to learn. We hope these new choral anthems from Choristers Guild will inspire and enliven your worship as you gather together to sing!
Let’s draw the circle wide, inviting all to join the song.

Digging Deeper into Called THE NEWEST MUSICAL FROM CHORISTERS GUILD AND MARK BURROWS
I wanted to explore with children what it means to be called. What does it look like? Sound like? Feel like? Is it the big booming voice on the mountaintop commanding Moses to go down to Pharaoh? Is it a whisper in the heart encouraging someone to go sit with the child in the lunchroom who’s all by herself?
A couple of weeks later was the beginning of Lent. Our church had set up a prayer labyrinth for Ash Wednesday. In the past, I’d always been a bit of a labyrinth skeptic, thinking it was a lot of new-age hooey. But I had a question weighing on my mind. I decided to walk the labyrinth slowly, contemplatively, holding this question in my heart, “God, do you want me to be a children’s minister?” I walked. I contemplated. I listened.
How do you know when you’re being called? Maybe I should start with my own personal call story. It was 2010 and I was the music director at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. I had been at the church for fifteen years. I appreciated my work and I loved the people I got to make music with. But things didn’t feel right. Had I overstayed my welcome? Had my bag of tricks simply run out? Was I burning out? Burned out? I genuinely began exploring other options. I thought about going back into the elementary music classroom. I thought about going back to college and working on my doctorate. I sat down with my best friend on staff at the church, Cynthia, the children’s minster at the time. I told her everything. After a pause, she asked, “Have you ever thought about being a children’s minister?” I laughed. Then I said, “Not a chance!” Then I laughed some more. I went home that night… And I started thinking about it. I told my wife, and she asked, “Do you even want to be a children’s minister?!” Again, I said, “No! Absolutely not!” But I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The next day I got to work and went straight into Cynthia’s office. “Okay, so what all does a children’s minister have to do? I mean, not just the obvious stuff like lead Sunday school. What behind-the-scenes things do you do?” After spending a solid hour visiting about it, she asked, “So, are you interested?” “Not really,” I said, which was honest at the time. “But I’m not completely closed to the idea.”
4 | thechorister | June/July 2019
When I got to the center of the labyrinth, there were some prayer tiles all turned face-down. Each one, I would learn, had a different affirmation written on it, such as Hope, Joy, or Peace. As I continued to hold the question – “God, do you want me to be a children’s minister?” – in my heart, I reached down and turned over a tile. It simply read – “Yes.” That brought me to my knees – literally. I cried. I said, “Okay.” Then I stood up and walked back out of the labyrinth the same way I came in, but differently. I had been called. Through Called, I want children to discover how God can and will call anyone. Jeremiah heard the call when he
DIGGING DEEPER INTO CALLED
was “ just a child.” Mary and Martha heard the call when Jesus came to visit. I heard the call in my late thirties in the middle of a labyrinth in Fort Worth, Texas. Know this – God has put something beautiful in you and is calling on you to share it with the world. It won’t always be easy, but God knows you and believes in you… even when you forget to believe in yourself. God is not calling you to be someone else. God is not calling you to be like someone else. God is calling you because you’re you. You are a child of God. You are worthy. You. Are. Called. What follows are a few music games. Each game offers a way to make rehearsals more engaging for the children while helping them internalize the music more easily. Beyond that, each game has a deeper point – helping children prepare their eyes and ears (and hearts and minds) to receive God’s call. Can a game be a devotional, too? Well, the choir that plays together and prays together stays together.
THE ME IN ME: REST GAME The opening song sets the tone. Our lives keep getting busier. The world keeps getting noisier. How can we possibly hear God’s call? In music we have something to help restore balance – the rest. A rest is not the absence of music, but simply the absence of sound. Have the children join you in clapping a steady beat in 4/4 time at a medium-fast tempo. After several measures stop. Say: Let’s try that again, this time resting on beats 2 and 4 of each measure. Have the children clap with you on beats 1 and 3 of each measure, observing the rests on beats 2 and 4. After several measures stop. Say: Let’s try that again, this time adding a rest on beat 3 as well. Have the children clap with you on beat 1 of each measure, observing the rests on beats 2, 3, and 4. After several measures stop. Say: Now things are about to get interesting. Let’s clap on beat 1, followed by seven beats of rest. Seems simple enough right? Here we go.
Have the children clap with you on beat 1 of a measure, followed by seven beats of rest before clapping again. In other words, you’re clapping one downbeat every two measures. Do this for several measures, then stop. Ask: What just happened. Did everyone clap at the same time? Did some clap early? Late? (Usually people tend to clap on the early side.) Remember, a rest is the absence of sound, but the beat keeps going. The music keeps going. We must listen to the music inside us to help keep from rushing to fill that beautiful silence with sound too early. Let’s try it again. Have the children clap with you on beat 1 of a measure, followed by seven beats of rest before clapping again. Do this over and over until the group starts to get more in sync. You can invite the children to bounce their open hands for the seven beats of rest, so they can feel the pulse. And if the children start to get good at this, try one clap every three measures, then every four measures. Say: We are a choir. We join together to sing our thanks and praise to God. But we can also praise God in the silence. Let’s spend one minute, exactly sixty seconds, in silence as we offer our thanks and praise to God. Note: In our modern world, sixty seconds of intentional silence is a rare gift. Consider making time for this in every rehearsal.
GOD CALLS US ALL: CALL AND RESPONSE GAME Say: God called Jeremiah, and Jeremiah responded. Jesus called on Mary and Martha, and they responded. The Bible is full of stories where God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit called on people to do what God needed them to do. In music there is a form known as “Call and Response.” A leader sings or plays a call – this can be a rhythm or a melody. Then the others in the group play or sing a response that answers the call. Say: Let’s play a game. I will clap a simple rhythm and you echo that rhythm back to me. But there’s a catch! Occasionally, I will throw in a special call rhythm that goes like this. The Call and Response rhythm comes from Isaiah 6:8 – Call - Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Response - Here I am, send me! [Big surprise – it’s a passage about being called by God!]

DIGGING DEEPER INTO CALLED
Call and Response Rhythm Mark
CALL AND RESPONSE RHYTHM Call:
Conga Drums
Response:
Whom shall I
send,
and
who
Demonstrate the call rhythm, chanting the text as you clap. Next, teach the children the response rhythm, inviting them to chant the text as they clap. Practice clapping the call rhythm and having the children clap the response rhythm. Say: Great! Now listen closely and echo whatever I clap. But…make sure that when I clap the call rhythm that you do not echo it but remember to clap the response rhythm. Ready? Here we go! Clap a simple one or two-measure pattern and have the children echo. Do this a few times, then occasionally clap and chant the call rhythm. Make sure the children answer with the response rhythm. After a few rounds, start working in the call rhythm without chanting the text and see if the children pick up on it. You might want to make it obvious at first by overaccenting the call rhythm. Say: There are many things and many voices calling us in many directions. True wisdom comes from knowing which ones to respond to. And true faith means that when the one calling is God, the response is always “Here I am, send me!”
I DON’T KNOW WHO TOLD YOU: SINGING STYLES GAME This game helps with a very important aspect of the rehearsal process. For so many of our singers learning the notes and rhythms comes fairly easily. But holding onto all those lyrics can be tricky. You know they need the repetition for the words to really stick, but if they have to sing Verse 3 of Song X one more time, there’s going to be a revolt! So, play a game. In the bridge of this song, there are a number of solos that point out different ways we can sing: Operatically A bit erratically Energetically Sympathetically Sssssupersonically Monotonically

Write all of these on a white board or poster. Next, invite the children to come up with even more ways we can sing. For example: Quackily - like a duck Sniffly - like we have a cold Aquatically – like we’re underwater Super slo-mo Like our tongues are frozen from eating too much ice cream Now, take a verse the children are struggling to memorize. Choose one of the styles above and have the children sing the verse in that style. Invite the children call out another style and have them sing the verse that way. A few rounds in and the children have the verse completely memorized – all while having fun instead of “drilling lyrics.” You don’t play this game every week, you want to keep it fresh and fun. But playing singing styles two or three times during the rehearsal process can really breathe some life and spontaneity into your time with the children. Say: There are many ways to sing because there are many different voices. God didn’t make the canary to sound like the great blue whale, or the wolf to sound like the elephant. Each glorifies God by using the unique voice God gave it. God didn’t make you like anyone else. And God doesn’t call you to sound like anyone else. God gave you your unique voice. God LOVES it when you sing!!!
I WILL STAND: STAND/SIT GAME This is a version of the old classic My Bonnie Lies Over © the Ocean Game. The word “stand” occurs numerous times in the song. Have the children sing through it with you. When you sing the word “stand,” all stand up. The next time you sing the word “stand,” sit down. And so on. It’s easy enough during the verses, but the refrain gets crazy. Here’s how many times “stand” occurs just in verse one and the refrain. Who will stand for the boy who’s always picked on? Who will help bring his sadness to an end?
DIGGING DEEPER INTO CALLED
Who will show him that he’s a child of blessing? Who will stand? Who will dare to make a friend? I will stand for this child of God’s own making. I will stand, I will lend a helping hand. I will stand up, so he will never stand alone. I will stand! I will stand! I will stand! Say: In life, it’s not what we stand against that most defines us. It’s what we stand for and who we stand with. What are some of the things we as a choir stand for? Invite the children to respond. Write these down on chart tablet or poster board so it can be preserved and posted in the choir room.
I HOLD YOU IN MY HEART: FERMATA GAME An actual conversation in choir rehearsal – Kid: Mister Mark, in the music, what’s that thing that looks like an eye? Me: It’s called a fermata. Kid: What does it mean? Me: It means “watch the conductor.” I joke with the kids all the time that all those music symbols and Italian musical terms basically mean watch the conductor. If you watch me there, I’ll show you what to do – how loud or soft, how fast or slow, or in the case of the fermata, how long to hold a note. Draw a giant fermata on a piece of cardstock. Say: Let’s play the Fermata Game. Here’s how it works.
This symbol [show the children] is a fermata. When you see it in music, it means to hold the note longer than you usually would. Let’s start singing I Hold You in My Heart. Watch closely. Whenever I hold up the fermata, you must hold whatever word you’re on until I put the fermata down. Then you continue singing the song until I hold the fermata up again. Got it? Here we go. Play the game. Start by holding up the fermata in some obvious places. As you progress, start holding up the fermata in trickier spots – e.g. the ‘and’ of beat two, in the middle of a word. You can even invite children to take turns being the conductor who holds up the fermata for the others. (Oh, the power!) This game, like Singing Styles, provides another fun way to mix it up and get lots or reps in the rehearsal without it feeling repetitious. After playing the game, have the children take a deep cleansing breath with you. Say: I want each of you to look at the words to this song. Find one short phrase – five or six words – that really touches you. [Examples: Let my heart be open. Help me hear your call. Catch me if I fall. I hold you in my heart. Guide me on my journey. I know you’ll be there with me. I feel your presence with me.] See how long you can hold that phrase in your mind and in your heart without being distracted by other things. Let’s take in another deep, cleansing breath and give it a try. Allow the children, and yourself, time to sit and breathe and hold the meaningful phrase in your hearts.

SACRED SONGS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Throughout history, music has served to break down divisions, draw circles wider, and tear down walls of hate and prejudice. Choristers Guild champions music and messages which build and strengthen communities. We are proud to offer many choral titles that address the important issue of social justice, and we are especially pleased to announce our newest choral series: the Mark Miller Choral Series: Anthems of Love, Justice, and Reconciliation. In Mark’s own words, “Too often the sacred worth of people is compromised and crushed by powerful systems sustained by those with power and wealth. Too often fear and violence are made the tools for salvation, rather than non-violent, peaceful, sacred interventions. It is the glad gift of music that engages our emotional life and helps us to embody our prayers for new life. Spirit-filled, spirit-given music shapes us into vessels of God’s love. Music, like prayer, may not change the circumstances in which we find ourselves, but it can change us and our perspective on those circumstances. Music can change the world.” If you are searching for choral music which fosters love and courage, promotes acceptance and beauty, and calls for peace and justice, consider these titles from Choristers Guild:

Fitting as a choral call to worship or an opening congregational song, this piece is a wonderful way to involve young choristers in worship leadership. This exhilarating concert/festival original works equally well as an opening or closing number. Featuring a celebratory Latin text, it begins with a declamatory vocal introduction which then moves into high gear, showcasing driving rhythms and multi-meters in both voices and piano. The more legato middle section provides an interesting contrast before returning to the main theme, transitioning to an uplifting key change, restating the declamatory section and pulling out all the stops for a dynamic conclusion. Teaching moments abound in this exciting work for developing choirs.

Patterson's stunning arrangement of this beloved Robert Lowry work is steeped in both strength and beauty. A combination of sustained and descending vocal lines open the piece, painting a waterfall-like effect that continues to accompany the melody. As the piece unfolds, each part has a moment to shine and from its cascading beginning to its musical peak, we are led on a meaningful, emotional journey. This a cappella setting is a welcome addition to treble literature and is a superb choice for both school and church choirs.
Johnson's dynamic setting of this text adapted from the Psalms is the perfect opening number for concert, festival or call to worship. The opening, fanfare-like section is complemented by a contrasting, legato middle section before returning to the joyous opening statement driving us to the exhilarating conclusion, complete with handclaps.

An earnest and accessible anthem of prayer, voiced here for men's choir. The inspired text from Nancy Kraft calls for the healing of our world through compassion, forgiveness, and understanding. Featuring a lovely, uplifting musical setting by Tom Keesecker. The score includes a reproducible page repurposing the anthem's refrain as a congregational prayer response.
Developing choirs will enjoy this fresh, creative arrangement of the traditional spiritual. All three parts have the opportunity to sing the melody at some point, and the stylistic, accessible accompaniment enhances the engaging vocal lines. Plus, it's loaded with lots of fun syncopation and dynamic contrasts to create an engaging musical concert or festival performance.

Carols of Christmas
Set

Arrangements for Solo Instrument to Full Orchestra
by Stan Pethel Flexible for any number or combination of instruments with piano or CD accompaniment
In response to the huge popularity of “Hymns of Praise,” here are ten delightful and accessible instrumental arrangements of seasonal carols. With the exception of the percussion book, each book includes a Solo and an Ensemble part for each carol. Basic performance can be with a solo instrument and piano or a solo instrument and accompaniment track. Add to this any combination of instruments using the ensemble parts up to and including full orchestra. The alto sax parts are independent and not just transposed horn parts you so often find. There’s even a part book for Baritone Saxophone! While there are some passages that may be a challenge for younger players most of the arrangements are within the skill level of a Grade III band or orchestra composition. Celebrate the season instrumentally with Carols of Christmas Set 1.
Options for use include: 1. Solo instrument with piano or orchestrated accompaniment track. The piano book works as accompaniment for all instruments as does the accompaniment CD. The solo instrument parts are customized for each instrument. 2. Multiple instruments and piano or track. Just have one instrument play the solo part and the other(s) play the ensemble part along with the piano or accompaniment CD. 3. Full orchestra. Cover all the parts in the score and get that big orchestra sound. If all the parts are not covered, you may need to place one or two players on the solo page to be sure the melody projects. 4. Remember these instrumental substitutions. Violins, oboes, and flutes can play the same parts, though some octave transposition may be necessary. Clarinets and trumpets can cover the same part with different timbres of course. Cellos, bassoons, trombones, and bass clef reading euphonium/baritone players can cover the same parts. These arrangements are in the grade II to IV level and are accessible by players from eighth grade and above. They are good lengths for preludes, offertories, and featured instrumental performance in the church or school setting. Additionally, they are in good vocal ranges if adding congregational or choral singing is a option. Some of the tunes are also associated with texts sung at other times during the year. News from National: Re-Visioning the Future BY TERRY GOOLSBY NATIONAL BOARD PRESIDENT
As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Choristers Guild this year, we take pride in the people and the purpose that brought this organization into being and have sustained it through generations. Today it is our turn to be its stewards, fulfilling our mission of nurturing the musical and spiritual growth of children, youth, and adults. Many associate Choristers Guild with children’s choirs, and naturally so. Our leadership position in music and educational materials for children’s and youth choirs makes for an incredible foundation. Still, our reach has grown. Our organization advocates for choirs of all ages. We publish an incredible catalog of adult and multi-generational music, and have expanded our line of instrumental music. We also are known as the leader in social justice music. By embracing new possibilities, we ensure that the Choristers Guild that has been dear to the hearts of so many for 70 years will continue to serve and nurture music and church leaders in the years to come.
LEADING WITH PURPOSE Bold choices are bearing fruit. Through the innovative and visionary thinking of our past executive director, Jim Rindelaub, we brought Mary Lynn Lightfoot aboard to create our school line, SING! Though Mary Lynn has now retired, we are blessed with Victor C. Johnson on our team to carry this line forward. Sing! easily supports a third of our budget, and continues to help us meet our mission. Our board is blessed to have seven members of various denominations from across the nation, with choral, handbell, community choir and teaching experience, and our treasurer is an experienced chief financial officer. Two years ago, we committed to a fresh talent and perspective by hiring Dawn Jantsch as executive director to manage our business. A choral singer but not a choir director, Dawn brought 30 years of experience in nonprofit management to our organization. As a nonprofit professional, she has strengthened our financial position and grown a strong team. In addition to the gifted editors responsible for our sacred, handbell/instrumental, and school choral music, the team includes two seminary students training for full-time ministry, a former news editor with church communications experience, and three choral/opera singers (two of whom also perform in handbell choirs). The number of master’s degrees and certifications in our team is incredible! Without a doubt, we have the best in board and staff functioning within the worlds of music and business. Our organization has never been in a better position than it is today.
GIVING FOR THE FUTURE Our mission is made possible in part by memberships, advertising, and the sales of our music and products. Much of what has sustained our mission through the years has been your generous contributions and bequests. We still need your help. Won’t you join my wife, Pam, and I as members of the Covenant Society? The Covenant Society establishes a legacy of giving through wills and other policies, assigning Choristers Guild as a beneficiary. The society includes present and past board member and presidents, composers, and executive directors, as well as members of our organization. Contact Dawn Jantsch, our executive director, for more information. We would love to have you in this society that will continue Choristers Guild for many years to come. It is our honor to serve you, our beloved members. Thank you, for all you do and for your continued support of Choristers Guild.
-Terry
