From the Editor

Wishing everyone warm summer greetings! In this issue I am so happy to present the fourth and final installment of Liz Shepley’s series “En Route to Life-Changing MusicMaking with Your Children’s Choir”, a Q&A with prolific composer Douglas E. Wagner, another devotional for adults by Nancy Bell Kimsey, and of course another trusty quick tip about copyright by Katie Deaver.

In addition to our regular features, we are thrilled to introduce lots and lots of resources to help you plan for the new choir year during the summer. And there are two new especially exciting publications from Choristers Guild sure to enrich your choral programs and worship experiences:

First up, we have A Year of Beautiful Singing: Let’s Sing! by Heather Potter. This comprehensive choir curriculum, tailored for ages 7-12, offers twenty-four weekly lesson plans designed to guide young singers in joyful vocal discovery. With complete teaching sequences for choral anthems, warmups, and visual aids, this resource is a musthave for church children’s choirs seeking to nurture musical growth and faith development.

And for our littlest choristers, we have Worship and Wonder: Story, Song, and Ritual for Preschoolers by Mark Burrows. This all-in-one worship resource is crafted specifically for children ages 3-6, offering twelve curated worship units centered around Bible stories and tailored rituals. Through gentle and playful engagement, Worship and Wonder fosters a sense of belonging and spiritual connection within our youngest members.

Check out these and more in the resources section!

HAVE YOUR WORK FEATURED IN AN ISSUE OF THE CHORISTER. Have you written a great teaching activity, Orff lesson, or choral warm-up that you would like to share? Simply send your original* items to afarnell@choristersguild.org and we will consider them for use in a future issue of The Chorister

Minimizing Distractions

Recently, I was able to visit a dear colleague in Minnesota. He and I worked together for a number of years, creating a seamless partnership between music and worship ministry and youth and family ministry at the church we served. He gave me a tour of their beautiful sanctuary but was most excited to take me up to the tech booth, located in the balcony. It had been reconfigured as a nook for the techs running the livestream and projection.

To my amusement, I noticed that half of the tech desk was plastered in meme stickers. Mark explained: after worship, the volunteers evaluate how they did; then they go to a three-drawer organizer filled with meme stickers which were sorted - 1) went terrific, 2) was adequate, 3) something went horribly wrong. One of them picks a sticker that represents how the day went and it is added to the desk.

This whole thing was quite hilarious to learn about, and it’s 100% the type of thing my friend would initiate - a fun and community-building way to hold themselves accountable for the important service they perform.

Once upon a time, when my husband and I both served the same church in Minneapolis, he crafted a small mission statement that hung in the soundbooth for many years:

Our mission is to enhance worship by minimizing distractions.

Our colleague, now at a different church, was inspired to hang the same mission statement in his balcony soundbooth. That’s the mission Mark’s team reflects

on each Sunday, before choosing the appropriate meme for the day.

Isn’t this statement pertinent to what we do, too? We minimize distractions during rehearsal so our people can focus on what’s most important. We choose music that adds to the worship theme, rather than distracts from the big idea. We pay attention to the practical details of moving/standing/sitting/ dressing/leading during worship so that the flow is helped, not hindered, by the presence of our musicians.

As you find time for refreshment and renewal over these summer months, perhaps this might be part of your reflection for next season. How can our process and planning become even more purposeful, for the sake of our ministry? The resources inside this issue of The Chorister might be helpful as you reflect - particularly Heather Potter’s new curriculum for elementary choirs and Mark Burrows’ preschool worship resource, both which equip leaders and volunteers to be present and purposeful as they guide the youngest among us to discover God at work in the world.

Wishing you a most joyful summer!

Our mission is to enhance worship by minimizing distractions.

Guild

Body, Mind, Spirit, Voice New Music and Litany to Mark 75th Anniversary of Choristers Guild

It is our hope to involve musicians of all ages in this celebration.

We’re excited to share what’s in the works for the Choristers Guild 75th Anniversary Celebration! On July 25, we’ll host a festival worship service at Reveille UMC in Richmond, Va., with a reception immediately following. The 75th Anniversary Celebration coincides with our summer Choristers Guild Institute, also taking place at Reveille UMC, from July 22-25.

This anniversary celebration is being led by national board members past and present, who are collaborating in service planning and preparation, service leadership, or simply with their presence in Richmond. The evening worship service, which is planned to be streamed for those unable to travel to Richmond, will introduce a newly-created litany for musicians commissioned for this anniversary using the theme: Body, Mind, Spirit, Voice!

The service will also include worship elements used for Choristers Guild’s 50th anniversary celebrations, which were held throughout 1999. As was done with the litany written for the 50th anniversary, the new litany will be shared in The Chorister so that individual churches may use it to uplift and bless the musicians in their midst.

This celebration will feature the premiere of a number of new choral and handbell pieces included in our 75th Anniversary Celebration Series. Dr. Anton Armstrong

and Elizabeth Shepley will lead singers from Richmond area churches as well as singers who are traveling from around the country to join the fun. (There is still time to sign up to sing with us!) Christopher Titko will lead the James River Ringers in this milestone celebration.

Adults and high schoolers are welcome to sing with Anton in our mixed choir, and students in grades 4-8 are invited to sing in the treble choir under the direction of Elizabeth. (The treble choir will rehearse on Wednesday and Thursday, and the mixed choir will rehearse only on Thursday.)

Sacred Choral and Curriculum Editor Katie Houts reached out to several composers in the Choristers Guild family to develop choral pieces for our 75th Anniversary Choral Series. She invited Mark Patterson to write a treble piece for the anniversary that could be used throughout the year, celebrating the lifelong gift of music.

“Mark wrote the text and music for Never-Ending Grace, a soaring unison/two-part anthem that is set in the magical part of a child’s voice and empowers them with a message

of God’s love and unending grace,” she said.

Katie also sought a composer to honor the life and work of Helen Kemp, setting her beloved mantra to music: Body, mind, spirit, voice! It takes the whole person to sing and rejoice! Helen’s dear friend, Tom Shelton, agreed right away - and teamed with Helen’s daughter, Kathy Ridl, to collaborate on additional lyrics.

Body, Mind, Spirit, Voice! is written for unison/two-part voices and features a “playful, lyrical melody that Helen would have LOVED!”

A few years ago, Katie asked Victor Johnson (composer and SING! editor) if he’d arrange Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee for combined choirs, and he delivered a magnificent, festive setting that incorporates handbells, brass, and singers of all ages. The musicians in Richmond will lift their voices in this grand arrangement, celebrating not only the continued legacy of Choristers Guild, but all the musical leaders around the world who nurture the musical and spiritual lives of those in their ministries and programs.

engaging piece is crafted in a world music style with lively percussion parts and call-andresponse-style writing, and set with Swahili text. (A pronunciation guide and translation of the Swahili text are included.) For additional 75th anniversary SING! titles, Victor chose new pieces from Ruth Elaine Schram and Greg Gilpin, two of SING!’s longtime, best-selling composers.

Victor also contributed another title in celebration of the 75th anniversary, Tunakuja na Wimbo, published through our SING! school choral line. This

Ruth’s The Golden Hour takes you on a journey through the everchanging canvas of the evening sky, masterfully capturing the aweinspiring splendor of sunset. “This piece is in her signature sound, with original text and beautiful reflection,” Victor said. Consider it a companion piece to the composer’s popular Watercolor Morning, which focuses on sunrise.

Greg’s Gloria in Excelsis Deo is a celebratory setting of the traditional Latin text, an ideal choice for inspiring an atmosphere of jubilation! This exciting work is a great choice for a concert or festival opener, and is a companion piece to the composer’s majestic Antiphonal Cantate.

BODY,

Handbell and Instrumental Editor Kathy Lowrie also celebrates an anniversary this year, that of her 35th year with Choristers Guild. In addition to editing handbell and instrumental releases, Kathy is the graphic designer behind our sheet music and many other publications, including The Chorister In considering who to honor with commissions for our 75th anniversary, Kathy’s thoughts turned to the five composers who had worked closely with her on a tight timetable to create downloadable music for small handbell ensembles in March 2020.

“During the pandemic, we did a quick and dramatic shift in our handbell publications in order to offer music for small ensembles, handbell solos, and piano music to meet churches’ need for live music when choirs were silent,” Kathy explained. Choristers Guild was the first publisher to focus its entire 2020 release on music of this nature, and it is what kept our nonprofit going during that challenging year.

Our 75th anniversary publications for handbells are:

• A Quiet Heart by Karen Buckwalter

• Cantad al Señor arranged by Mitchell Eithun

Someone to Watch Over Me arranged by Sandra Eithun

• The Lord Now Sends Us Forth arranged by Cathy Moklebust

• Just a Closer Walk arranged by Anna Laura Page

(Turn to our Resources section, page 33, for more information on these beautiful pieces.)

The celebration will continue beyond our July event. There are additional choral pieces in the 75th Anniversary Choral Series that will be released in October - including a new Rote to Note piece based on Psalm 100 written by Toni Sullivan, a graduate of the Choristers Guild Institute and now a best-selling composer. Stay tuned for more outstanding music that celebrates Choristers Guild’s legacy and mission!

En Route to Life-Changing Music-Making with Your Children’s Choir – Part 4 of 4

This article concludes the four-part series on music-making with your children’s choir. You’ve taken time to read, gather information, and make decisions about what and how you might implement concepts and tools which will help you accomplish your goals. I applaud you. You are the hope in the building – and the building back – of strong children’s church choral programs. Your membership in Choristers Guild and taking advantage of The Chorister and other guild resources is an obvious indication of your concern for children, and for the growth of their minds, spirits and voices through choral music. Providing a climate of trust which fosters your students’ curiosity, eagerness to learn, and excitement in intellectual and emotional discovery will serve to grow lifelong learners. You too will grow through vitalizing interaction with your students. Your combined experiences can enrich the future of the musical world (and the world itself).

We are all influenced by likely and unlikely “teachers” throughout our time on earth. Countless experts, mentors, students, friends, and even strangers have no doubt had an effect on your life as they have mine. In the field of music through studies, observation, and varied experiences, the efforts of others have shaped and informed my approach to working with children and youth in choral and classroom settings. These writings emanate from a lifelong

passion from the funsized age of three of singing in church choirs, community choirs, school choirs, and teaching/ conducting the same. You’ll perhaps have recognized within these articles an old friend, such as an exercise or tool you have used, observed, or read about and, like me after forty years, not know from whose wonderful work it originated.

The previous articles addressed the mindful preparation needed before you meet your choir for the first time. This includes establishing your program’s purpose and envisioning the choir environment and the role of your singers as you all learn and grow together. Leading to your success involves imagining the healthy choral sound you wish to achieve and designing efficient, creative, and successfully challenging lesson plans with your goals in mind. (Article 1 in The Chorister, Autumn 2023)

The Big Three (Article 2 in The Chorister, Winter 2024) are basic building blocks, the essential foundation for the musicmaking capabilities you’re aiming to achieve with your singers. Layering additional skills on each student’s solid foundation will add depth to their musical understanding and performance. Article 3 (in The Chorister, Spring 2024) focused on two such skills: inner hearing and music literacy.

You are the hope in the building – and the building back – of strong children’s church choral programs.

Summer 2024 | June-August | thechorister | 7
The most exciting and important feature of any choir: the contribution of each unique, God-given voice to the collective.

This final article touches on the most exciting and important feature of any choir: the contribution of each unique, God-given voice to the collective. Young singers often arrive with a variety pack of vocal ideas and attitudes. They may wish to mimic their favorite pop star, or perhaps even a classical singer, likely resulting in a nasal timbre, forced tone, or breathy production, all commonplace issues in an inexperienced group.

Our challenge as teachers is to work towards a healthy, blended, and resonant tone while encouraging developing singers to embrace their natural voice, emphasizing the beauty in their combined voices. The following represent tried-and-true ideas helpful in developing the overall sound you wish to achieve with your choir.

Breathing for Singing

Breathing for singing, or breath energy, provides the foundation for healthy, resonant, tuneful and expressive singing. Tone-quality, phrasing, dynamics, soundblending, and articulation all relate directly to the proper use of breath inhalation and exhalation.

Children tend to labor with their shoulders, head, and neck when asked to take a big breath. While younger singers are likely to imitate a teacher’s inhalation and respond to a down and wide gesture as an invitation to take a breath, older children and youth will benefit from breathing exercises which help them understand how to produce their most beautiful singing voice.

Practice inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth in addition

to mouth-only breathing. A breath through the nose may encourage a more relaxed and deeper breath, useful for beginning a piece and during an interlude. Experiment with both as you and your choir work towards developing a gorgeous choral sound with the following exercises:

1. Natural Inhalation

This exercise starts with the expression of all of the breath, then allows the ribs to expand and the lungs to fill naturally without taking a breath.

Exhalation: Relax shoulders up, back and down, and keep chest high. Place hand on chest as a reminder to stay tall and prevent collapse.

(Mae using her hand to keep posture tall.)

Inhalation: The key to this exercise is to “allow” the breath to flow back in rather than “taking” a deep breath, which for many singers results in

8 | thechorister | Summer 2024 | June-August
EN ROUTE TO LIFE-CHANGING MUSIC-MAKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN’S CHOIR

a shallow and tight breath which is insufficient for singing. Add a gesture of open hands scooping the breath down and wide. Direct the singers to observe the action of the lower ribcage effortlessly creating space for a new breath.

➢> Variation: “Shh” all of the air out over 8 counts. Again, without taking a breath, soundlessly allow the air to rush in over 4 counts.

2. Dive Up

Feeling the abdominal and back expansion on Dive Up is dramatic. Clasp hands together and exhale while raising your hands above your head. Allow the air to rush back in deeply through the nose, and, keeping the chest high, lower hands to the side, exhaling on a “hiss.”

3. Panting Dog

Long a favorite of many choral leaders, this exercise helps even the youngest children clearly feel abdominal movement. Blow all of the air out and allow fresh air to flow back in through the nose, fueling short, panting bursts of air like a dog who has been chasing a ball. A hand on the sternum reminds students to keep the chest high, and the other hand on the abdomen monitors the movement. Start slowly and, as the singers are proficient at that pace, increase the tempo.

4. Birthday Candles

Similar to the Panting Dog exercise in its effect, blowing out birthday candles on their next birthday cake is delightful for young students (and

especially so if it really is someone’s birthday on rehearsal day!). The abdominal action is again apparent, making clear that breathing for singing happens there and not from raising the shoulders.

5. Pssst, Shhh…

Connect the breath with consonants while pretending to get the attention of the noisy ones across the room and telling them to be quiet: “Pssst, pssst!

Shhhhhh…!”

Vocal Development

The human voice is capable of producing a wide variety of timbres from light and airy to resonant and warm. Children and youth have fun playing with their voices and producing contrasting sounds in a number of ways: shaping vowels vs. shapeless vowels; creating space by raising the soft palate and lowering the tongue vs. diminishing space with a lowered soft palate and raised tongue; connecting with the breath vs. singing without breath energy. The play can be silly, fun, and informative (no shouting or other harsh, vocally harmful sounds allowed, however). Choose a portion of a piece you’re working on. Ask half of the choir to close their eyes and listen to the other half. The singing half performs two ways: once with a less than desirable sound, and again with the corrections you like to hear (i.e. a breath connection, raised soft palate, shaped vowels). The listening half raises their hands when the sound is beautiful. The answer is, hopefully, apparent. Giving the entire choir an opportunity to listen and vote, however, is a helpful listening experience for all.

The play can be silly, fun, and informative!

EN ROUTE TO LIFE-CHANGING MUSIC-MAKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN’S CHOIR
Demonstrate a healthy, natural vocal production for your singers to emulate.

Play with the following exercises to help develop vocal tone:

1. Echo improvisations

This is a treasured exercise which can be tailored to suit your needs. Besides being fun and engaging, call-andresponse singing grabs childrens’ attention and keeps their focus.

Start with short phrases using neutral syllables to ensure success. You might choose “doo,” “dah,” “fa,” “foh,” or a combination. Focus on vowel formation and blending while expanding tonal memory. Once your singers are familiar with and can accurately reproduce your initial patterns, add challenge with intervals and length. Demonstrate a healthy, natural vocal production for your singers to emulate.

➢> Variation: Introduce solfege syllables to help your singers internalize the pitches and develop their ability to recall them correctly.

➢> Variation: Add Curwen hand signs as a way to associate specific pitches with symbols or gestures.

2. Baby Bird or Swan?

This exercise can make a remarkable transformation in your choir’s sound. Your singers play with the extremes of an exceedingly bright, baby bird sound contrasted with a dark, swallowed tone representing the swan. In between the two is the desirable, well-balanced timbre.

Select a comfortable pitch for all. Place your hand at the side of your face in front of your mouth in the shape of a baby bird beak. Make the brightest, most forward [a] vowel possible. Continuing to sing the same [a] vowel, move your hand along the side of the face just behind the ear, your wrist lifted to represent a swan’s neck, as your voice mimics the movement. Move back and forth and find that lovely, balanced sound at midpoint.

(Finn playing with Baby Bird and Swan sounds.)

3. Elastic Band

Use an elastic band to help illustrate a tall, round sound versus a spread, strident sound. An elastic band can be purchased from a fabric store and cut into 8-inch lengths. Keep it for yourself to demonstrate or, with clear parameters for use, make enough for your singers to each have one.

10 | thechorister | Summer 2024 | June-August
EN ROUTE TO LIFE-CHANGING MUSIC-MAKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Placed horizontally in front of the face, the children will immediately know what kind of sound that shape will produce. As we know, no beautiful sound can be produced horizontally! When the band is moved back toward the ear vertically, the space and sound will change dramatically. Sliding the band forward and backwards to suggest the rising (back) or lowering (front) of the soft palate allows the singers to play with the space and the accompanying sound.

4. Matching Vowels with Hand Motions

Used by great conductors for a long time, this version is in Timothy Seelig’s book, The Perfect Blend. The choirs I’ve conducted love how they sound performing these beautiful vowels.

An exercise about vowel color rather than range extension, the choir is to sing five pure vowels: [i] [e] [a] [o] [u]. Sing them all on one pitch, or all on one pitch but descend on [u]: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Gestures:

[i] lower chin, round lips, pull the ‘ee’ out of the crown of the head.

[e] bring the hand around in front of the face and down in an elongating gesture

[a] simply loosen the jaw, getting rid of tension, but not dropping it too dramatically

[o] “lasso’ the lips for the “oh” [u] pull the “oo” out as if through a straw

(Norah pulling an “oo” out as through a straw.)

➢> Variation: Once your students are capable of harmony, play a chord and have your students select a note within that chord on which to sing the vowels. Have them listen to see if all notes are sounded and the chord balanced.

5. Solfege with Gestures

Unified vowels are the goal with this beautiful diatonic scale exercise.

Do: Hands make a large round shape in front of mouth

Re: Backs of hands slide in an upward direction on each cheek

Mi: Pull an [e] from the middle of your forehead

Fa: Fingertips from shoulders up and around to the front of the body

Sol: Hands form large [o] as in Do

The choirs I’ve conducted love how they sound performing these beautiful vowels.

EN ROUTE TO LIFE-CHANGING MUSIC-MAKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN’S CHOIR

I’ve used these exercises with upper elementary and middle schoolaged groups with great success.

La: Fingertips up and around to the front of the body as in Fa

Ti: Pull an [e] from the middle of your forehead, as in Ti

Do: Hands make a large round shape in front of mouth

➢> Variation: Sing in a two- or three-part round

Tried-and-True Exercise Collections:

Books and collections which engage the imagination, incorporate purposeful gesture or body movement, teach music concepts, and help to create a beautiful and healthy vocal/choral tone are worth adding to your collection.

Three tattered resources in my library are suitable for all ages:

1. Daily Workout for a Beautiful Voice by Charlotte Adams/Santa Barbara Publishing, Inc., Octavos for students SBMP 40. DVD SBMP583. Buy both to keep in your collection if you would like to see physical movement and mental imagery paired with exercises designed to build the voice. Though shown with an excellent high school girls’ choir in the DVD, I’ve used these exercises with upper elementary and middle schoolaged groups with great success.

2. Timothy Seelig’s The Perfect Blend, is a collection of creative and effective warm-ups. As choral instructors, we’re always in search of ways to make challenging concepts (i.e. breathing to sing, vowel formation, tone production, finding resonance) simple. EN ROUTE TO LIFE-CHANGING MUSIC-MAKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Chiming In

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry – James 1:19

Playing in a handbell choir requires intense concentration. Members must constantly think ahead to upcoming measures and be ready with the correct handbell in order to chime in just at the right beat. An incorrect entrance will disrupt the flow of the entire piece.

above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

Grant me a humble view of myself, and use me as a helper and encourager.

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone and suddenly realized that you are not really listening to the other individual? Your mind is leaping ahead to the comment that you intend to make. Because your brain is busy formulating what you think will be the perfect statement, the other person’s words and emotions become inconsequential to you. Not only can this lead to misunderstandings, but it can undermine healthy relationships and communication. It’s also a symptom of pride to believe that what I have to say is so brilliant or important that I can slack off on truly listening to others.

The Bible encourages us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. (James 1:19) Our minds are not to be preoccupied solely with thoughts about ourselves. In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. (Psalm 10: 4) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others

Christ is our example and the source of any humility that we are able to obtain. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2: 5-11)

Prayer for Today:

Dear God, forgive me for those times that I have exalted my own thoughts and ideas and have not really been a sincere listener. May there always be room in my thoughts for you and for the needs and opinions of others. Grant me a humble view of myself, and use me as a helper and encourager. Amen.

Quick Tips with Katie A series of easily answered questions

Q: Hi, Katie. When I try to report the use of certain hymns, I am often unable to find a version in the database that includes information on which resource the hymn is included in. The title and contributors all match the version I am using, but I do not know whether it is the correct version since it does not say anything about our specific hymnal. What should I do?

– Ben, Winnipeg, Canada

A: Hello, Ben. Thank you so much for reaching out with this question! The most important thing to remember for situations like this is that copyright is song specific, not hymnal or resource specific.

Even though your hymnal might be published by United Church Publishing House, The United Church of Canada, for example, that does not mean that they own the copyright for every hymn included in the hymnal. For example, perhaps there is a hymn that is copyrighted by Augsburg Fortress Publishers included in the hymnal. If Augsburg holds the copyright for that hymn, they continue to hold it no matter which resource the congregation is using. As long as the title, contributor name(s), and other copyright information from your source matches the entry in our database, you can feel confident that you are reporting the correct title. Many beloved pieces exist in different hymnal / missalette resources!

For those who utilize one of the hymnals in our drop-down list, the above example is why you cannot always find every hymn in your hymnal when searching by number. The publisher of the hymnal is only able to include data for the titles on which they hold copyright. If you search by hymn number and there are no results, this does not mean the title is not covered. Simply type the title and contributor last name into the search bar and, if the title is from one of our Member Publishers, you will be able to find and report the correct result.

My greatest joy is creating music that helps make lessexperienced singers and instrumentalists sound their very best.

Q&A with Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner is an internationally recognized composer and arranger holding a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music from Butler University.

Q: What inspires you to compose?

A: For me, it’s not the final product, but rather, experiencing the process, the journey that gets me to that point. That is the most exciting and fulfilling part. I must confess to a bit of mild depression when I’ve completed a project, until a new seed starts germinating, and I’m off again. I suppose that’s one of the reasons that has contributed to the writing and publishing of over 3,500 titles during my 50-year career as a professional composer/arranger.

Q: What do you usually start with when composing?

A: Choral music, of course, usually begins with the inspiration of a text (either original or established). I do a good deal of gathering, and discarding, ideas before I ever sit down at the piano, starting the process with a pencil sketch (whether it be a choral or an instrumental work). Since I also write a fair amount of my own texts, those brainstorming sessions often result in 4 or 5 legal sheets crammed with quickly scrawled words, phrases, and rhyming ideas to draw from, before the actual lyric writing begins. From a musical standpoint with choral works, the vocal parts are always written first, then the accompaniment,

followed by the introduction, and addition of any other instruments that are part of the overall fabric. The transfer to notational software is the last step, with considerable editing along the way. As a general practice, I don’t send a completed composition or arrangement to a publisher without leaving it on my desktop to breathe for a couple more days, revisiting and refining it several times more before I push the send key.

Q: Could you give us an insight on how you compose? Methods you use, how things come to you?

A: As I frequently tell those who ask that question, I have more ideas than there are harps in heaven; I’m never at a loss for new concepts to pursue.

Q: How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Though I continue to write music in the sacred area, most of my current work is focused in the educational market, music for school choirs, concert bands, and orchestras. And, though I do embrace the challenges of writing higher-end works, my greatest joy is creating music that helps make less-experienced singers and instrumentalists sound their very best.

Q: What would you consider the most challenging aspect of composing music?

16 | thechorister | Summer 2024 | June-August

A: As in any artistic endeavor, it is knowing when to stop, when to realize that a work is finished.

Q: What is your favorite musical composition that you have created and why?

A: It’s always the composition or arrangement that I’m currently working on.

Q: What would you say was your biggest success as a composer?

A: The ability to write in myriad styles, formats, and scoring options.

Q: What impact has composing had on you?

A: It has made my life the richest

Something Told the Wild Geese

Blow the Wind Southerly

anyone could possibly imagine. Every day is a new adventure. Every morning is a fresh start.

Q: What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

A: I honestly cannot see myself having gone down any other pathway in life.

Q: Where do you see yourself musically in 5 years?

A: Hopefully, God willing, continuing to do what I’m doing now.

Every day is a new adventure. Every morning is a fresh start.

The story of the Good Shepherds caring for their sheep holds a relatable message for all ages: God’s love for us has no limits. The young shepherds in this mini-musical not only gain a greater understanding of God’s love for us, but also learn about God’s call to care for each other. This short musical is designed for children in grades 1-6. It can be performed by a cast/choir of any size, and the run time is approximately 12-15 minutes. This production could take the place of the sermon for Good Shepherd Sunday, it could be used as the primary theme for a Music and Arts summer camp week, or it could be incorporated into a closing program for Vacation Bible School.

Storms

CGC69

A musical for unison/two-part voices, piano, and percussion

Composer Mark Burrows offers youth a remarkable experience to discover God’s ever-present love and care in Storms: a new musical for unison/two-part voices, piano, and percussion. Storms features a group of children who wonder if they have what it takes to weather storms of their own. No matter the storm, we are always loved and we are never alone. We are even empowered to follow Jesus’ example by being there for others during their storms. This production also features a fun bucket drumming experience and a meaningful service project for the whole community. A convenient audio pak product allows directors to share the demo tracks with everyone involved in the production - and also includes all the accompaniment tracks for performance. More Power to You!

Finding Our Strength in God

Discover how God gives us the power to face any problem - even a GITOP!

Journey to Bethlehem

Erik Whitehill

CGC65

As the angels visit Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds to tell the good news of a baby boy, recurring musical themes connect these visits and these characters as they journey to Bethlehem. Composer Erik Whitehill hits just the right mix: from a heartwarming ballad to a jazzy title tune, and a delightful Gloria round to bookend arrangements of ADESTE FIDELES. Minimal set and costume needs - use the nativity props and costumes you already have on hand!

The musical is scored for unison or two-part voices with piano, with optional parts for handbells/handchimes and a small chamber orchestra. A great Christmas cantata option for a smaller adult choir.

Illumina is a paraphrase of Psalm 119:105108. Included above the music is the Psalm text to provide some creative reference for ringers and directors. Throughout the piece, the words “light our way” are illustrated in the form of two eighth notes and a quarter note. This original composition opens with a plainchant played on optional handchimes accompanied by random ringing, then is followed by a richly harmonized statement of the main theme. A more active section follows with fluid LV sixteenth note patterns accompanying a variation of the theme. A return to the opening plainchant with random ringing concludes this prayerful composition.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Arranged by Carol Lynn Mizell

CGB1295 2 octaves

CGB1296 3-7 octaves

When the familiar words of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” are sung, the hymn tune, ST. LOUIS, is the one most often heard in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland, one hears these words sung to the FOREST GREEN tune which was collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and first published in the 1906 English Hymnal. As a tribute to the international nature of the fellowship of the handbell community, this arrangement uses both of these tunes. To add to the visual aspect of the handbell performance, a new suspended mallet technique is employed at the beginning and the end of the piece.

Mack the Knife

Oh the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear And it shows them pearly white Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe And he keeps it out of sight

These are the opening lyrics of Mack the Knife, one of the most famous songs from the 1928 Threepenny Opera, a groundbreaking work that blends elements of musical theater, jazz, and social commentary. The song introduces the character Macheath, a charismatic but dangerous criminal known as Mackie. It describes Mackie’s exploits and criminal activities in a catchy, upbeat melody, juxtaposing the dark subject matter with an ironically cheerful tune. Mack the Knife has been covered by numerous artists in various styles, including Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others. Its popularity endures, making it a classic of both musical theater and popular music and now in handbell literature.

On This Day Earth Shall Ring (also known by the tune name, PERSONENT HODIE) is a delightful setting of the familiar 16th century tune. The harmonic treatment is reminiscent of the era of the tune’s origin. This energetic setting utilizes articulations including mallets, thumb damps, marts and mart lifts. The interesting dynamic and harmonic changes make this setting fun to ring at Christmas time. Published in compatible editions for 2-3 and 3-5 octaves, this arrangement is also included in the collection, I Heard the Bells.

This original work for handbells paints a serene picture of a winter landscape blanketed in lightly-falling snow. The singing bell and lyrical passages evoke the beauty and quietude of the season. Cascading lines mimic the gentle fall of snowflakes capturing the magic of a walk through the woods on a snowy day. Touching on themes of nostalgia, wonder or the passage of time, this piece is ideal for the winter season or year-round.

Arrangements for Solo Instrument to Full Orchestra | Flexible for any number or combination of instruments with piano or orchestrated accompaniment tracks

Here are ten delightful and accessible instrumental arrangements of seasonal carols. With the exception of the percussion book, each book includes a Solo and an Ensemble part for each carol.

Options for use include:

1. Solo instrument with piano or orchestrated accompaniment track. The piano book works as accompaniment for all instruments as does the accompaniment CD.

2. Multiple instruments and piano or track.

3. Full orchestra.

These arrangements are in the grade II to IV level and are accessible by players from eighth grade and above. They are good lengths for preludes, offertories, and featured instrumental performance in the church or school setting. Additionally, they are in good vocal ranges if adding congregational or choral singing is a option.

Voicing: Single instrument to full orchestra, with piano or CD accompaniment

tom toms, congas or bongos, and finger cymbals are added, and the carol becomes more rhythmically steady through the use of a repetitive, malleted bass line, resembling a slow processional. An upper treble countermelody is introduced, while the melody and bass lines are played by optional handchimes. The conclusion is much like the beginning, with singing bells and chime tree, followed by the rhythmic, malleted bass line and drums, gradually fading away. This haunting, gentle arrangement is fitting for either worship or concert. The percussion parts are included in the full score.
