Let Everything that Breathes Praise the Lord

Master Ringer Series • This delightful, joyful original composition is based on the words of Psalm 150. The psalm text is printed above the handbell part as a creative reference for the ringers and director. The main theme is presented by handchimes and singing bells in the slow, mystical introduction. An exciting, driving rhythmic section follows, accompanied by percussion, with various handbell techniques, multimeters, and key changes weaving in and out. A lush and lyrical section provides a calming respite, before a brief return to the mystical feel of the beginning. A grand, glorious ending makes this piece a must-have for the church or concert handbell ensemble.

I Want Jesus to Walk with Me Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Jesus Is a Rock in a Weary Land Seasons: Lent, Transfiguration, General This reproducible collection provides delightful arrangements of hymns and spirituals for 12 bells with optional keyboard accompaniment. The pieces may be played by six ringers using standard bell assignments. If some or all ringers wish to ring 4-in- hand, it may be played by as few as three ringers. Suggestions for various assignment options are included. Not only do these arrangements present opportunities for ringers to learn 4-in-hand ringing, it also offers satisfying music for services, schools and other events that may be played with fewer ringers.

Composed with massed ringing in mind, this original work lends itself equally well to being rung by a single handbell choir. It is composed Watch in the Mixolydian Mode, thus the white keys on the piano from G to G with a lowered 7thdegree (F natural instead of the expected F#). The title can be easily adapted to different situations. Another teaching opportunity occurs on two occasions in this piece where “hemiola” is employed: m. 21-22 and m. 53-54. Help ringers to understand that two groups of three beats are replaced by three groups of two beats with the resulting accents on beats 1 & 3 in the first measure and beat 2 in the second measure.

Level 2

CGB1140 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells with optional 3 octaves handchimes Watch This arrangement of Sweet Hour of Prayer will work well as a prelude, an offertory, or during a time of reflection in a worship service. It would also be a lovely addition to a sacred concert. Teaching opportunities include encouraging ringers to bring out melodic sections (such as the handchime melody beginning with the pickup to measure 5, and the bass melody in measures 25-28.)

Rejoice, the Lord Is King!

Built on a rhythmic motif, Matthew Compton gives us a fresh and joyous take on a well-loved hymn. A contrasting middle section provides Watch a moment of reflection, and a soaring counter melody carries the piece through to a rousing conclusion. Rejoice, the Lord Is King! will provide a celebratory addition to Christ the King/Reign of Christ Sunday, Easter/Eastertide, as well as other times in the church year. It will also make an excellent concert opener or closer.

La Vie en Rose

Concert Showstoppers Series • Written in France in 1945 and popularized in the U.S. during the 1950’s in the film Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn, this rich and sensitive signature song of singer Edith Piaf has been set for handbells and handchimes by Sandra Eithun. The literal meaning of the piece is “life in pink,” but can be translated to living life in rosy hues. The beauty of the lyrical lines and lush chords will be a lovely addition to any concert or advanced festival track, and is often instantly recognizable.

There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy

This tranquil, flowing arrangement by Karen Lakey Buckwalter is based on the 19th century American tune known as LORD, REVIVE US. The opening measures consist of an original motif which is interwoven throughout the piece as we travel through two verses of the Watch tune and end with the original motif. Several themes of the text are: God’s mercy is as wide as the sea, God’s grace is for everyone and God’s love is broader than what the human mind can measure. These basic beliefs of the Christian faith are prominent in this hymn making There’s aWideness in God’s Mercy an excellent option for many Sundays throughout the year.

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

Watch The John Goss tune, LAUDA ANIMA, is the source of this majestic arrangement for 2-3 or 3-6 octaves which is appropriate throughout the church year. Beginning with a fanfare introduction, the first stanza is presented in a powerful, straight-forward style. Two softer, more flowing stanzas are next, featuring LV accompaniments, a treble counter-melody, the tune in the middle range, and an eighth note obbligato. A crescendo leads into the fanfare sounds of the introduction and a brilliant, shimmering conclusion.

Colors of

Joy

As with joy, handbells can take on many colors. This composition brings out many different “colors” of the instrument. The variety of Watch techniques are great for developing ringers to learn all the sounds of the instrument. Rehearsing in sections will be helpful, practicing the similar sections together. For example, the “A” material found in measures 1-8, 9-16, 41-48 and 65-72 is essentially the same. By playing all of those “A” sections, the choir will realize that they already have a large portion of the piece learned. Ringers and listeners are sure to enjoy the many “Colors of Joy” heard throughout the piece.

Watch Arranger Patricia Hurlbutt effectively captures the dance-like quality of the 16th century tune, GELOBT SEI GOTT. In addition to expressing the triumph of Easter, encourage ringers to create a lightness and buoyancy by observing the strong downbeat and lighter upbeats of the triple meter. Marts are prominent in the middle section which leads to a key change and a grand final stanza. www.choristersguild.org

A bell motif provides the unifying element of this new Level 2 arrangement of the well-known hymntune, HYFRYDOL, entitled Love Divine. All ringers are kept busy as the piece builds rhythmically and dynamically from start to finish. This lovely and regal new arrangement of the hymn, “Love Divine All Loves Excelling” is usable through the church year, in concert, or for massed ringing.

Watch With a laid-back feel, this original, memorial composition depicts the ocean waves and swaying palm trees of Hawaii. A ukulele-like figure accompanies a memorable, easy-going melody which gradually becomes richer and more fully scored. It then gives way to a slower, reflective iteration of the theme before returning to the opening feeling once again. Appropriate for concert use or during a celebratory church service, this piece is sure to become a favorite of both ringers and listeners!

What Wondrous Love Is This

Watch Published in two compatible editions, this tender setting of the beloved Appalachian folk song may be played by either handbells or handchimes. With minimal bell changes and easy techniques such as shake and echo, this piece provides an excellent opportunity for expressive, sensitive ringing. This arrangement is especially effective during Lent and Holy Week or any time of quiet meditation.

Performance options: This arrangement may be played by handbells alone, with or without instrument and/or congregational singing. The refrains and stanzas may be used to accompany congregational singing. This is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals, and the keyboardist may play right from the hymnal. Use the refrains and stanzas referenced below as desired on the various stanzas and refrains of the hymn. If desired, the optional introduction (measures 1-6) and the optional ending (measures 47-50) may be omitted when used for congregational singing.

Performance suggestions: The processional may begin with any part, adding other parts on each repeat, or by starting with all parts together. Repeat as many times as necessary until ringers are in their positions and ready to accompany the singing of the hymn, playing of the setting on pages 4-9, or until desired. End the processional on the beat 1 of measure 4. A solo instrument or keyboard may play the hymn tune (melody only) at any point during the processional. In this case, the handbells should play measures 1-4 for the first, second, and fourth phrases of the hymn tune, and play the optional measures 5-8 on page 3 for the third phrase of the hymn tune. Parts for C or Bb instruments are printed on page 11. An edition for 2 or 3 octaves is available, code CGB1138. The editions are compatible for massed ringing.

For reference: A - Standard Refrain B - Standard Stanza C - Standard Refrain D - Enhanced Stanza E - Enhanced Refrain This setting may follow the “Processional on All Glory, Laud, and Honor” printed on pages 2-3. Parts for optional C or Bb instruments are printed on pages 12-15. Copyright © 2019 Choristers Guild. All rights reserved. Printed in U.S.A. Saint Louis Blues March

Concert Showstoppers Series • W. C. Handy is often referred to as the Father of the Blues. His ever popular “Saint Louis Blues” was first Watch published in 1914, and has been performed by an impressive list of artists through the decades. “Saint Louis Blues March” was arranged for band by Jerry Gray in 1948, and was first played during the Big Band era by groups led by Glenn Miller and Tex Beneke. The stunning excitement of that band arrangement has now been brought to handbells! This stirring march utilizes a great variety of handbell techniques and offers wonderful challenges for all ringers.

Contents Wade in the Water Deep River Hornpipe (from Water Music) Shall We Gather at the River Down to the River to Pray

Anna Laura Page Wade in the Water is a collection of five familiar tunes that have “water” in their theme. The handbell parts in each piece are written for 12 bells, and are playable by 3 to 6 ringers. They may be played by 6 ringers with two bells each, or as few as 3 ringers if all are ringing four-in-hand. The accessible piano accompaniments are a lovely addition but are totally optional. These settings are intended to provide fun pieces that may be used in various venues with fewer ringers. The collection includes both “full scores” for a conductor and/or pianist, and extracted handbell parts for the ringers. All pages may be reproduced by the original purchaser. Limited Print License

Flexible for any number or combination of instruments with piano or CD accompaniment Spirituals of Faith is designed to allow for maximum flexibility of use. With the exception of the percussion book, each book includes a Solo and an Ensemble part for each of the ten spirituals. Basic performance can be with a solo instrument and piano or a solo instrument and accompaniment track. Add to this any combination of instruments using the ensemble parts up to and including full orchestra. While there are some passages that may be a challenge for younger players, most of the arrangements are within the skill level of a Grade III band or orchestra composition and are accessible by players from eighth grade and above. They are good lengths for preludes, offertories, and featured instrumental performance in the church or school setting. For similar flexible instrumental arrangements, please explore our Hymns of Praise and Carols of Christmas, Set 1 series.
