Compatible editions for 2-3 and 3-5 octaves with optional percussion: large djembe (or congas), small djembe (or bongos), caxixi (or maracas), shekere (or other large shaker), gankoqui (or agogos), and handchimes | CGB1173 Full Score | CGB1174 2 or 3 octaves | CGB1175 3, 4 or 5 octaves
He Came Down is a traditional “call and response” song from Cameroon, which has been arranged for 2 or 3 octaves, or 3, 4, or 5 octaves, optional handchimes, and optional percussion. Give it an African feel by using djembes, caxixi, shekere, and gankoqui, or a Latin flavor with congas, bongos, maracas, and agogos. Techniques abound with mallets, mallet lifts, mallet rolls, martellato, martellato lifts, thumb damps, ring touches, and vibratos, making this a happy, joyful addition to the Christmas or general repertoire.

Beloved Christmas carols for 8 handbells or handchimes and piano
Arranged by
Anna Laura Page
News of Great Joy is a collection of five Christmas carols, set for 8 handbells or handchimes and piano. Since there are no bell changes, each ringer has only two bells to ring in each piece, making the possibilities of ringing during the Christmas season numerous. Handbell tables are not necessary, and there is the possibility of ringing these pieces without the piano when one is not available. The ringers simply may ring through the measures of rests. Celebrate the season!!

Reflection on Stuttgart – arr. Buckwalter Level 2
3 octaves handbells with piano and flute CGB1220 Full Score | CGB1221 Handbell Score
Karen Lakey Buckwalter has arranged “Reflection on Stuttgart” for handbells with piano and flute. The tune, Stuttgart, may be found in hymnals with a variety of titles including: “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus”, “Crashing Waters at Creation” and “Child of Blessing, Child of Promise”. The familiar hymn tune is artfully arranged with a very accessible handbell part while the piano and flute capture the sweet “dolce” marking and give support to less experienced handbell ringers.

Contemplation was composed as a personal response to the loss of a dear friend. I chose to base the piece on a musical motif that has been around for centuries to represent sadness or grief: the chromatic fourth. This melodic fragment covers a perfect fourth, with all the inter vals in the descending line being present from the tonic to the dominant degrees of the scale. (See the up-stem bass clef notes in measures 1-3.) Performance notes: Where notated on three staves, the center staff should dominate. When there are two notes together with an accent in the center staff, the lower note receives the accent while the G5 holds back dynamically a bit. The tempo is indeed Adagio. Pay attention that the piece always remains slow, even when forte in m. 36.

Bright and Glorious Is the Sky – arr. Moklebust Level 2

CGB1218 3-6 octaves handbells
This arrangement of the Danish tune DELIG ER DEN HIMMEL BLAA features considerable variety in the sections, including happy and light-hearted, a standard hymn setting, a softer, more contemplative mood with handchimes, and a dramatic transition with random ring ing into the final, majestic conclusion. Malleting, thumb damping, shaking, and LV’s are the techniques used and there are no accidentals. Compatible editions for 2-3 and 3-6 octaves of handbells and handchimes are available, making this accessible piece playable in massed festival ringing as well as worship or concert, during Christmas and Epiphany.

O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery) – Moklebust Level 2+
CGB1236 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 octaves handbells with optional 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 octaves handchimes
This new, original work for 3-5 octaves of handbells and optional handchimes is based on the 11th century Responsorial chant for the Matins on Christmas Day: “O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger!” The text is printed above the handbell staves to give ringers and directors a creative and musical frame of reference. Handchimes weave in and out through the piece, while the simple yet soaring melody and rich, poignant harmonies convey the beauty and mystery of the birth of the Savior. O Magnum Mysterium is certain to be one of the most moving and profound additions to the Christmas handbell repertoire.

HYFRYDOL (pronounced huff-ruh-doll) is quite a tune coming from a 19th-century loom tender’s assistant at the Welsh Flannel Manufacturing Company. Rowland H. Prichard’s beautiful melody has been paired with a variety of texts, appearing in most hymnals at least once. This setting is inspired by Charles Wesley’s lyrics “Love divine, all loves excelling”, but don’t hesitate to adapt the title to coordinate with another hymn text. Be sure to seek out the melodic line when it gently weaves its way into the lower voices. The indication “peacefully flowing” says it all in terms of handbell technique.

Rays of Hope – S. Eithun Level 3
3, 4, 5 or 6 octaves handbells with chime tree, rain sticks and/or ocean drum, and optional 3 or 5 octaves handchimes
Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. Rays of Hope is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day. The opening illustrates the passing unrest and gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle section reminds the listener that uncluttered days are never a given or soon forgotten. But, hope does return with the theme to round out the ending of the piece. Techniques such as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets, thumb damp and LV are incorporated. The piece’s texture is further enhanced by the addition of chime tree, ocean drum and/or rain sticks and optional handchimes, all combining to add interest.

Night of Stars (Creator of the Stars of Night)
arr. Tippette Level 2
Night of Stars
As night begins to show itself, stars slowly twinkle, one by one. In this arrangement of “Creator of the Stars of Night,” these stars are represented by the random ringing of handbells, while the original hymn tune CONDITOR ALME SIDREUM is rung underneath. A low, open 5th drone creates an ethereal atmosphere, perfect for setting the tone for any church service, especially during Advent. The piece concludes, very much as it begins, much like the night stars fading away to make room for the morning sun.

Us Ever Walk with Jesus
4 or 5 octaves handbells with optional flute
Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus, arranged by Karen Lakey Buckwalter, is based on an 18th century chorale tune. Karen has energized this chorale with “walking” eighth notes in the accompaniment and she also paired the hymn tune with an original, joyful melody playable with optional flute or handbells. Suitable for themes of discipleship, commitment, joy and eternal life, this lesser-known chorale will be a great addition to your handbell library.
