Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

HEAD COACH RICK HECKLER

Rick Heckler enters his second year as the head coach of the women's bowling team and men's cross country team. In 2012-13, he led the men’s cross country team to the first-ever CIAA Championship appearance where the Hawks finished in eighth place. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the men’s cross country program again this season. I enjoy getting to know the student-athletes and preparing them to compete on behalf of Chowan University,” Heckler commented. Heckler also serves as the women’s bowling coach for the Hawks. “I enjoy the experience of coaching two teams at the collegiate level. I have worked hard to gain experience in coaching and I’m grateful for the challenge of building both of these programs.” Previously, Heckler served as the head varsity coach for women’s basketball, baseball, golf, and cross country at Northampton County High School-East. In addition to his coaching duties, Heckler was the ninth grade history teacher.

Prior to coaching and teaching at Northampton-East, Heckler taught ninth grade world history, and coached varsity softball, and women’s basketball and tennis at Hertford County High School. Heckler also has administrative experience after serving as the athletic director at Warren Area High School in Warren, PA from 2002-2004 in addition to coaching softball and women’s basketball. Heckler received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He resides in Murfreesboro with his wife, Lauri.
