Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North
Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Brian DeWitt Assistant Softball Coach Brian DeWitt enters his second season as Assistant Softball Coach at Chowan University. He will work primarily with the Hawks pitchers and catchers. DeWitt comes to Murfreesboro with an extensive playing and coaching career. During his first year here at Chowan, Dewitt helped Chowan standout pitcher Allie Kolezynski to a 10-9 overall record and a 3.35 ERA, a NCCSIA All-State Softball Team Selection, and 2012 CIAA Woman of the Year. DeWitt is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. During his time there, he was a member of an ASA National team. Upon graduation, he took a high school teaching position in Tomah, WI, where he was also the head softball coach for five seasons. DeWitt continued to play in the same ASA National league while in Tomah. DeWitt then became the head softball coach at Highland Community College. He turned around a struggling program there and won 45 games in his three seasons as skipper. In 2004, DeWitt became the first ever softball coach at Louisiana State University-Eunice. He led the Lady Bengals to a 21-19 record, including a national ranking, in their first season of competition.
Most recently, DeWitt was the head softball coach at Kalamazoo College, where he stayed for two seasons. “I am honored to be at Chowan University. I am looking forward to learning from Coach Balduf, while also contributing in my own way to help this program. I am truly thrilled to have this opportunity,” said DeWitt.
Christina Merrida Assistant Softball Coach The Chowan softball program has announced the addition of Christina Merrida to their coaching staff. Merrida joins the Hawks as a volunteer assistant coach, and will primarily help coach the outfielders and slappers. Merrida is a native of Woodland, California and a 2011 graduate of East Carolina University. She earned her degree in Communications, and was a four year member of the softball team. Merrida was a four year starter for the Pirates, and led the team to a 44-18 overall record and 16-5 Conference USA record during her senior season. After graduating from ECU, Merrida returned home to serve as a volunteer assistant coach for Pioneer High School. She has additional coaching experience through teaching private lessons in both North Carolina and California.
She adds a wealth of knowledge and expertise in terms of slapping and the short game, as well as outfield play having been a member of the ECU softball team for four years. Having an extra set of qualified hands will provide our student-athletes with a higher level of instruction and guidance. Her networks and connections in her home state of California will also be a recruiting tool for us.”
Now, as part of the Hawks program, she will be counted on to work with the slappers and outfielders. Head Coach Mandi Balduf stated “Coach De Witt and I are excited to add Christina to our staff for the upcoming season.

Chowan University stands in the old Albemarle region of North Carolina between the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner of the state. The Murfreesboro area was first settled during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the principal inhabitants were several Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes. Today, the stately old homes seem to whisper of the storied colonial and antebellum days. Murfreesboro is located approximately 60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. Murfreesboro is the location of the boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed, discoverer of the cure for yellow fever, and home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and special events are offered throughout the year by local groups.
