Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North

Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

CHRIS STAMBAUGH Director of Tennis

Chris Stambaugh will enter his fifth season as the Director of Tennis at Chowan University. Stambaugh has 15 years of NCAA DII tennis head coaching experience. He took the tennis program to new heights during the 2012-13 season with both the men’s and women’s teams competing in their first-ever CIAA Championship title match, with the men’s team also claiming the CIAA Northern Division title. Pedro Aiala, Ivan Doubograev, Danilo Galovic, Breanne Johnson, and Natalya Kamenshchikova all earned All-CIAA honors that same season, with Aiala also earning the nod on the 2013 Commissioner’s Scholar Team.

Stambaugh’s men’s squad totaled a 13-18 overall record in 2012 (10-6 CIAA). They finished in second place in the CIAA North. Stambaugh led his women’s team to an 13-16 overall record, and 11-4 mark in the CIAA. He produced the CIAA Women’s Rookie of the Year, Natayla Kamenshchikova who posted a 23-1 singles record. Inesa Asatryan was also named to the All-CIAA team alongside Kamenshchikova. The men's team, meanwhile had their first All -CIAA selections ever with seniors Bjorn Blythe and Adam Moneypenny. Stambaugh came to Chowan from Shepherd University (WV) where he was the Head Men's & Women's Tennis coach for eleven successful seasons. He was named WVIAC Coach of the Year four times in 2001-2003, and 2005 and his teams won six WVIAC Championships. He guided the 2003 women's team to a WVIAC while the men's team also claimed the title in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Stambaugh was a standout player for Shepherd during his undergraduate days and helped the team win the WVIAC Men's Tennis Championship in 1988. That season, Stambaugh won individual conference titles at number five singles and number two doubles with teammate Ferran Macipe. In 2006 Stambaugh was ranked #1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the USTA in 35-and-over Singles. Chowan University stands in the old Albemarle region of North Carolina between the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner of the state. The Murfreesboro area was first settled during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the principal inhabitants were several Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes. Today, the stately old homes seem to whisper of the storied colonial and antebellum days. Murfreesboro is located approximately 60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. Murfreesboro is the location of the boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed, discoverer of the cure for yellow fever, and home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and special events are offered throughout the year by local groups.
