Chowan University is a four-year co-education institution. It is the second oldest of North

Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Head Coach Melody Tenney Melody Tenney was named Head Volleyball Coach in January and enters her first year on staff at Chowan University. Tenney noted, “I’m very excited to be joining the staff at Chowan University. I look forward to building on the previous success of the Hawks’ volleyball program while maintaining a winning tradition. I love the family atmosphere that Chowan has on campus.” Vice President/Director of Athletics Ozzie McFarland added, “When Meredith Long and I began looking for volleyball coaches, we wanted an enthusiastic coach who had previous head coaching experience on a similar level, and who knew how to manage a team. Melody Tenney fits that description perfectly. I am so excited about what she brings to both our volleyball program and our University. Her Christian witness, academic expectations, and emphasis on being successful exemplify exactly what I feel our University stands for.” Tenney spent the past two seasons as Head Coach at TruettMcConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia. After inheriting a team that won five games in 2013, Tenney doubled the program’s number of wins in her first season (10-26) and advanced to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. The Lady Bears also produced two NAIA Academic AllAmericans that same season. In 2015, Tenney led the Lady Bears to a school-record eleven wins. The team also saw several student-athletes earn individual honors with two All-AAC Freshman Team honorees (including AAC Freshman of the Year Jocelyn Mahayag), one AAC First Team recipient and three AAC All-Academic Team members. Truett-McConnell posted an 11-19 overall record over the course of the season and finished 7-13 in AAC play in Tenney’s final season with the squad. Prior to her time at Truett-McConnell, Tenney gained experience as an assistant coach at Piedmont College. There, Tenney helped the Lions earn a 28-9 overall record during the 2013 season highlighted by a school record 13-match win streak.

About Coach Tenney EDUCATION University of Mobile, 2012 PLAYING CAREER Warner University (2009) University of Mobile (2010-2012) All-Conference Setter of the Year

Assistant Coach Chris Guerra Chris Guerra enters his first season with the volleyball program. He serves as Assistant Coach. Guerra stated. "I am very honored and excited to be part of the Chowan family. I am looking forward to a great season and working with motivated student-athletes".

Tenney noted, "I am very excited about Chris joining the volleyball coaching staff. He brings with him a wealth of experience after coaching at a high-level Division II program, so he understands what it takes to be successful at this level. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the game will be important in helping our team succeed". Prior to joining the staff at Chowan, Guerra spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Nova Southeastern University. In that capacity, he developed practice plans, planned team travel arrangements, and tracked opponent tendencies all while working specifically with the team's defensive schemes. Guerra gained experience coaching the Florida Suns U18 Girls Volleyball Club and serving as Head Coach for the boys and girls volleyball team at Cypress Bay High School. In 2013, Guerra led the Cybress Bay girls team to the District Championship and regional finals while guiding the boys team to both District and Regional Championship titles as well as the state quarterfinals. That same season, Guerra was named Sun-Sentinel Coach of the Year, and Miami Herald Coach of the Year. He was a four-year starter and captain for the Warner University men's volleyball team. Guerra graduated from Warner in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management. He resides in Murfreesboro.

Chowan University stands in the old Albemarle region of North Carolina between the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner of the state. The Murfreesboro area was first settled during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the principal inhabitants were several Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes. Today, the stately old homes seem to whisper of the storied colonial and antebellum days. Murfreesboro is located approximately 60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. Murfreesboro is the location of the boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed, discoverer of the cure for yellow fever, and home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and special events are offered throughout the year by local groups.
