Chowan University is a four-year co-education institution. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institution’s name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses, recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree. Meet the 2016 CU Women’s Soccer Team Head Coach Chris White White enters his second season at the helm of the Chowan women's soccer program. In his first season as head coach, the Hawk’s posted a 1-12-2 record, with three players receiving the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award. Before coming to Chowan, White spent four seasons coaching women's soccer at NCAA Division I institutions, with stints at Duke University, the University of Miami and Colgate University. White served as an assistant coach for the Blue Devils' women's soccer program during the 2014 season where he worked specifically with the team's goalkeepers to develop student athletes' technical, psychological and fitness components. During the 2013 season, White served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Miami after spending two seasons at Colgate University. In his first season with the Raiders, White helped Colgate earn the Patriot League regular season title and guided four players to All-Patriot League honors. The Raiders had a total of seven All-Patriot League selections, two Player of the Year and two Rookie of the Year honorees during White's time at Colgate. White served as the first assistant coach for the women's soccer program at Amherst College from 2010-11, where he assisted with all facets of the program including: recruiting, training, game preparation, camp and clinic management and scouting. Prior to his time in the collegiate ranks, White gained coaching experience at the high school level, coaching at six different high schools over the course of eight years. Additionally, he coached various club and Olympic Development Programs as well as high school and college camps. White earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Colgate in 1996 and was a four-year member of the Raiders' men's soccer team. During his career, White earned First-Team NSCAA Regional All-America honors as well as All-Patriot League recognition. Upon the conclusion of his athletic career at Colgate, White competed for Perth Italia, an Australian First Division Soccer Club. White later attained two master's degrees, one in Environmental Science from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and one in Ecology and Native Studies from the University of North Carolina and he holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma including the NSCAA's Advanced National Goalkeeper Diploma.

Meet the 2016 CU Women’s Soccer Team Assistant Coach Fernando Zuniga Fernando Zuniga enters his first season with the Chowan women's soccer team. He serves the program as an assistant coach. Zuniga noted, “Chowan University is a place of strong values and an amazing feel of family and community. Those were some of the reasons I decided to attend Chowan as an undergraduate student, and now, as a coach I believe it is a great place to continue my coaching career. I’m excited about the opportunity to become part of a program with such a rich history and to work alongside a coach with a vast amount of experience. I’m really looking forward to working with an amazing group of student-athletes and helping them to become successful on and off the field”. White added, “We are really excited to have Fernando join us. His experience as a student-athlete will be an asset. He has also done a great job with both soccer programs at Ridgecroft. He has a strong sense of values consistent with our vision, and he is passionate about teaching and learning aspects of coaching. It’s an exciting time for Chowan women’s soccer and Chowan University. We believe Fernando will help us reach our goals on and off the field”. Zuniga competed for the Chowan men's soccer program for four seasons. He made 58 starts for the Chowan Blue and White, was named captain as a junior, and played an integral role in the team's school-record 12-8 season in 2014. The Hawks competed in the NCCAA South Region semi-final that same season. In the spring of his senior year, Zuniga served as a student assistant with the men's soccer program. He assisted with the planning of field training and strength and conditioning sessions. Additionally, he volunteered as part of the Hawks Soccer Academy. Upon graduation, Zuniga gained coaching experience working with the Hawks Soccer Academy and serving as Head Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer Coach at Ridgecroft School. Zuniga managed all aspects of the varsity and junior varsity girls' and boys' soccer programs including training sessions, skill development, and teaching tactical and technical facets of the game. He graduated from Chowan in May, 2015 with a degree in Business Administration. During his time at Chowan, Zuniga was an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was named to the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society, and the President’s List. He was also a Leadership Scholar. Zuniga resides in Murfreesboro. GO HAWKS
