SEASON NOTES
Chowan returns to the court for their sixth season in the prestigious CIAA. The Hawks look to build off a 1215 finish in 2013-14 and 6th place finish in the CIAA Northern Division (6-1). A core group of eight returners along with six talented newcomers look to make the upcoming season a memorable one for the Blue and White. Seniors Kyree Bethel, Tiron Brown, and Mark Anthony Buright will be counted on to lead the Hawks through a challenging schedule and increased expectations this season.
SEASON PREVIEW 2014-15 The Hawks enter the 2014-15 season in their third year under the direction of Brett Vincent and their sixth season in the CIAA. The Hawks improved from a 7-20 mark and 0-16 CIAA finish two years ago to post a 12-15 overall record and 6-10 mark against CIAA opponents in 2013-14. After winning six of their last eight games heading into the CIAA Tournament, the Hawks bowed out after the first round as Saint Augustine’s edged Chowan 79-73. The men’s basketball team lost two key players to graduation; Greg Alston and Ashante Ross. The duo combined to start 46 games last season for the Hawks. Alston dished out 64 assists and tallied 24 steals while averaging 22.4 minutes per game. Ross averaged 12.0 points per contest while hauling in 5.4 rebounds per game. Seniors Kyree Bethel, Tiron Brown, and Mark Anthony Buright will be counted on to lead the Hawks’ squad during the upcoming season. Bethel competed in 26 games last season and averaged 10.6 points per game with 66 three-pointers on the year. Brown enters his senior campaign after collecting 60 assists and 20 steals last season. Buright rounds out the trio of seniors and looks to make an impact on the court this year. Warren Powers enters his sophomore year after a solid freshman campaign. The CIAA All-Rookie honoree scored double-digits on 10 occassions and matched a career-high of 16 points in games against St. Augustine’s, Mount Olive, Apprentice School, and Livingstone. Chowan welcomes six newcomers to their team this year with three freshman and three transfers. Michael Adams and Josh Mellette join the squad by way of Wake Tech CC while welcoming DC Womack from Houston Baptist University. Freshmen Trevis Buckhannon and Hank Edmonds come to Murfreesboro from Dunbar, Maryland and Irmo, South Carolina, respectively, while Andrew Lopez comes from Kinston, North Carolina.
After competing in an exhibition against UNCGreensboro on November 14th, the Hawks officially begin the season on November 16th when they host Barber-Scotia in the Helms Center. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm.

Brett Vincent returns for his third season with the Hawks. Vincent comes to Chowan with an extensive NCAA DII coaching and playing NCAA DI playing background. Vincent will serve as the program's fourth head coach in four-year school history (1993). The Hawks finished the 2013-14 season with a 12-15 overall record and 6-10 finish in league play and had one player earn All-Rookie honors. Vincent led the Hawks to a 7-20 overall record in 2013, and guided Kortez Smith to earn the 2013 CIAA Rookie of the Year award, with Quinton McDuffie being named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team. Vincent, a native of Shinnston, West Virginia, comes to Chowan after spending eight seasons with the Fairmont State University men's basketball program. He served six seasons as an assistant coach, two as the associate head coach, and spent the 2011-2012 season as the interim head coach. During the 2010-2011 season as an associate head coach, Vincent helped the Falcons to a winning season as the Falcons posted a 17-10 record. He helped in the development of then-guards Isaac Thornton, a first team AllWVIAC pick and Steve Custis, a 1,000-point career scorer.
BRETT VINCENT 3rd SEASON
During the 2008-2009 season, Vincent helped the Falcons earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament as FSU posted a 22-8 record, the first 20 win season the Fighting Falcons. He also helped grow Custis into a first team All-WVIAC pick and then-freshman guard Thornton into the WVIAC Freshman of the Year. In 2008-09 he helped the Falcons to their first 20 win season since 2001 and coached All-American guard Thad McFadden and WVIAC All-Freshman pick Custis. Four seasons ago, the Falcons posted a 19-10 record and Vincent was instrumental in the guidance of the prolific back court of two-time All-WVIAC second team pick Ronnie Means and first team all-conference selection Thad McFadden. Means set school records for assists while McFadden made more threes than anyone in school history in just two seasons. Prior to his eight-year stint at Fairmont State he spent three seasons as head coach at Lewis County High School. The team's total wins under Vincent were a 30-win improvement over the three seasons prior to his arrival at Lewis County. In 2003, he led Lewis County to the section championship and an appearance in the regional final. Lewis County posted its first winning season in 17 years and received its first top-10 state ranking in 19 years that season. The Minutemen also picked up postseason wins in each of his three seasons. Prior to his stint at Lewis County High School, Vincent compiled a 92-49 record as the head basketball coach at Alderson-Broaddus from 1996-2001. He took over in 1996 at the age of 28, and as one of the youngest head coaches in the NCAA, promptly led A-B to 20 wins in three of his five seasons. The Battlers led the WVIAC in points per game in 1998, and were fifth in the country in defensive field goal percentage in 2000. His teams advanced to the WVIAC tournament semifinals twice and to the championship game once. Vincent played college basketball at three Division I schools: West Virginia University, Robert Morris and Marshall University, and was a starter at all three schools. As a freshman at WVU, the Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA Tournament. As a sophomore, West Virginia was 8-1 with him starting at point guard and he was named to the All-East Academic team as the Mountaineers advanced to the NIT. Vincent then moved on to Robert Morris where he spent two seasons with the Colonials, the first of which he sat out due to transfer rules. As a junior, Vincent helped lead RMU to its second straight Northeast Conference title and NCAA Tournament where the Colonials took on Kansas. As a senior at Marshall, he led the team in assists and still is the school's leader in career 3-point field goal percentage (43 percent). He received his bachelor's degree in sports management in 1991 from Marshall University in Huntington, West VA and his master's degree in education from SalemTeikyo University in 2000. Vincent graduated from South Harrison High School where he led the state and was ranked fourth nationally averaging 35.9 points per game as a senior. He led the Hawks to an undefeated regular season in 1986, the only one in West Virginia. He was named the Morgantown Touchdown Club West Virginia Player of the Year in the 1986 season, and was a three-time all-
state selection and captained the Class AA All-State team as a senior. Brett Vincent is married to the former Andrea Gum. The two have one son, Cole.
Lee Branscome enters his third year as part of the men's basketball coaching staff. Head Coach Brett Vincent is glad to have Branscome on staff: “We are excited to have Lee as part of our program. He has the qualities needed to be an outstanding coach. His knowledge of Chowan University and the CIAA will be a great asset to the future of the Chowan basketball program.” Branscome is a 2012 graduate of Chowan, and was a four year member of the men’s basketball team, and served as captain during his senior year. Not only was Branscome an integral part of the basketball team, he was a leader off the court and in the community as well. While earning his degree in Sport Science Physical Education, he was a Leadership Scholar during his time at Chowan, a member of the President’s List and Dean’s List, and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. During his senior year, Branscome played an active role on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was a nominee for the CIAA Lowe’s Senior Class Award.
LEE BRANSCOME 3rd SEASON
Branscome has gained coaching experience as an associate at Accelerate Basketball Training facility in Charlotte, NC, and as a varsity assistant coach at Hickory Grove Christian High School. Branscome is a native of Charlotte, NC. He currently resides in Murfreesboro.
Willie McGee enters his second season with the men’s basketball program, and comes to Chowan by way of Akron, Ohio. He has been heavily involved in coaching basketball youth as well as community outreach and mentoring. The 2003 St. Vincent St. Mary High School graduate (Akron, OH) was an integral part of three Division II Basketball State Championships. The success of the team, along with former teammate and reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, Lebron James, opened up numerous coaching opportunities for McGee at a young age. Upon graduation from St. Vincent St. Mary, McGee attended Fairmont State University where he competed as a football and basketball student-athlete. He graduated in May of 2008 with a degree in Information Systems. From there, McGee returned to his hometown and served as a graduate assistant for the University of Akron while working on a master’s degree in Physical Education and Sport Administration. While part of the Zips men’s basketball program, McGee was responsible for the day-to-day operations along with recruiting responsibilities and guided the squad to a MAC Championship in 2011.
WILLIE McGEE 2nd SEASON
McGee worked with his high school team during the 2008-2009 season as the head freshman coach and assistant varsity coach of the Division II District, Regional and State Championship team. During that time, he also served as the site director for the King James Shooting Stars Annual Classic where he supervised the entire operation in terms of operations and enforcement of policy as defined by the Amateur Athletic Union. In December of 2011, his work experience shifted from the athletic arena to mentoring and community outreach. McGee took a position at the Akron area YMCA where he worked as a youth advocate and case manager. He worked to redirect anti-social behavior as a mentor and was responsible for communicating with Summit Country Child Services and Juvenile Court on behalf of his clients. He later joined the Minority Behavioral health Group as a case manager and community support provider, working specifically with crisis management. The Ohio Hoop Zone Hall of Fame inductee has made a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel live, the “More Than a Game” documentary, and is included in the book, Shooting Stars. McGee currently resides in Murfreesboro.
