2014 SEASON PREVIEW The Hawks and head coach Tim Place hit the gridiron in 2014 hoping to improve off of their 4-6 overall record and 3-4 finish in CIAA competition earned one year ago. After graduating 18 seniors, the Hawks will rely on 85 returners as well as a key group of newcomers to work for success in the coming season. Place notes, “The fact that 4-6 is considered a disappointment tells one how far the program has come since 2008. With that said, we’re not paid to make excuses; rather, we’re paid to find answers...we must be physical, tough, relentless, and competitive. We all must understand that and buy into it.” Chowan kicks-off the year on September 6th when they host Fayetteville State University in Garrison Stadium in a nonconference match-up. The Hawks will then hit the road for three straight road contests. The Hawks will square off against Alderson Broaddus on September 13th at 12:00pm before taking on North Carolina A&T the following week in their first meeting against the Aggies. CIAA crossover play begins for Chowan on September 27th against Saint Augustine’s University. The Hawks and Falcons will face-off at 1:30pm in the Falcons’ new stadium. The Hawks will then enjoy a three week home stand against CIAA opponents. Chowan and Winston-Salem State will face each other on October 4th in Garrison Stadium. The Rams and Hawks will meet for just the third time in the history of both programs (2011, 2010). October 11th and 18th mark the beginning of Northern Division play with home contests against Bowie State and Virginia Union respectively. The Hawks then head to Elizabeth City State on October 25th to take on the Vikings in the always anticipated cross-town rivalry contest. A road game against Virginia State on November 1st and home finale on November 8th against The Lincoln University will mark the end of the season for the Blue and White. The Hawks’ game against the Lions will serve as Chowan’s annual Hall of Fame and Senior Game. Chowan returns two CIAA All-Rookie honorees to the team, Andrew Denny and Kevin Tarr. Tarr, a native of Flowery Branch, GA, played and started in six games while working with an offensive group that collected just under 4,000 yards over the course of the season. Denny, of Woodbridge, VA, competed in seven games while collecting 18 tackles (14 solo, five assisted) during his rookie campaign. The Hawks lost four-time CIAA performer and CIAA Offensive Player of the year, Robert Holland to graduation along with three All-CIAA Second Team honorees, Aeon Blake, Jason Ampy, and DaKorion DeSamme. On the offensive side of the ball, DaSean Martin and Anthony Clanton combined for 801 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season. Martin notched eight touchdowns as a junior while averaging 43.9 yards per contest. Clanton followed with a 36.2 yard per game average. Ryan Nolan and Antjuan Randall will be counted on as top receivers for the Hawks this season. Nolan hauled in 21 receptions over the course of last season with Randall following close behind with 19 on the year. Defensively, rising senior Jared Turner amassed 44 total tackles for the Blue and White (27 solo, 17 assisted), along with five interceptions and three breakups. After throwing 777 yards and 11 touchdowns passes as a junior, Dain McFarland hopes to be relied upon for quarterback duties this fall. Place continued, “There are a lot of lessons that can be learned from what happened last season. Games are won in January, February, March, and April, and during summer strength and conditioning as that’s when one conditions oneself to have the psychological endurance to sustain the season. It will be a tough grind because there are a lot of real good teams on the ’14 schedule. We have to have the mental toughness to hang in there and hang together.”
