Chowan enters its third season of competition in the CIAA. Dan DeRose, in his second season, brings in 12 newcomers and returns six from a year ago. In his first season, the Hawks finished 5‐22 overall, 4‐14 in the CIAA. Leading scorer Quinton McDuffie returns with fellow starters Mark McGlone and Greg Alston.
Men’s Basketball Season Preview 2011‐2012 Dan DeRose enters his second season at the helm of the Chowan University Men’s Basketball program. In his first season, the Hawks went 5‐22 overall and 4‐14 in CIAA play. They earned the #5 seed out of the CIAA north in the CIAA Tournament, where they lost their opening game, 67‐60, to Johnson C. Smith University. Chowan loses Charles Rhodes and Travis Williams to graduation. Rhodes became Chowan’s eighth 1,000 point scorer last season. He led the Hawks with 45 three‐pointers, and averaged 11.5 points per game. Williams started 11 games last season and shot a team‐high 83.7% from the free throw line. DeRose brings in a bunch of new talent for the 2011‐2012 campaign, starting with two new assistant coaches. Kenyan Weaks and J.R. Reid have joined the Hawks staff. Weaks was a standout at the University of Florida, where he finished his career ranked second in school history in three pointers made. J.R. Reid enjoyed a stellar career with the University of North Carolina before playing 12 years in the NBA. On the court, the Hawks will showcase 12 newcomers to the program (six freshmen and six transfers). Highlighting the freshman class is Ricardo Martin, a 6’6 post player from Airport High School in Columbia, South Carolina. As a senior, Martin averaged 14.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and was named First Team All‐Region. Headlining the transfers are Rickey Lamb and Antonio Reddic. Lamb played at Division I Mississippi Valley State University last year, where he average 3.0 points per contest and shot 42.3% from the field. Antonio Reddic averaged 25.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.2 steals per game at the Community College of Beaver County (PA). The 6’4 wing was a First Team All‐ Region and First Team All‐State selection at CCBC. The Hawks return six players from last season, including four players who started at least 14 games. Leading scorer Quinton McDuffie returns
for his junior year after averaging 13.6 points per game last season. McDuffie also average 5.7 rebounds per game and shot 49.4% from the floor. Mark McGlone and Aaron Allen, two frontcourt players, combined to average over 11 points and three rebounds per contest a season ago. Point guard Greg Alston started 15 games as a freshman, while averaging 1.9 assists per contest and shooting 68.8% from the charity stripe. Chowan will begin the 2011‐2012 campaign in Johnstown, PA at the Pitt‐Johnstown Tournament on Friday, November 11th. Prior to his stint at FFSC, Weaks w was an assista nt coach at M Marshall Univeersity, wheree he helped guid de the Thund dering Herd too a 24‐10 reco ord. Jam mes Simpkinss will enter hiis second season as a stud dent‐assistantt coach for the men's basketball progra m. Simpkins helped the Hawks to a fiftth place CIAA No orth finish during the 20100‐2011 season n.Before his sstop at Chowaan he en njoyed 10 years in the US A Army where h he played for the Army Post Men’s Vaarsity teams from 1998‐20000. Then, in 22000 he turneed his focus o onto coaching g wh here he began his coachin g career as th he Post Men’s Varsity Coach where he co ompiled an ovverall record oof 39‐7 in two o seasons. In his first year,, his team captured the Caapital Classic Tournament, the Fort Jackson Thanksggiving hootout Cham mpionship, an d a second pllace finish in the Virginia M Military Sh Se ervice League Championsh ip. Affter two years as the Headd Coach on th he US Army Po ost Varsity levvel Simpkins de ecided to movve his attentioon to the nationally known n and recognized Boo Williams Summ mer League AA AU Organization (2008 ‐ 20 010). As head d coach for WSL New Gen neration’s boyys basketball team he led them to the 2 2009 Virginia BW Statee Championsh hip and a seco ond place finiish in the 200 09 AAU Nationnal’s Classic B Bracket. He will worrk primarily ost players. with the Hawks’ po Highlyy touted out of nearby Kem mpsville High h School, Reid d went on to sstar at the University of North h Carolina, unnder then heaad coach Dean n Smith. In his three season ns in Chapel H Hill, Reid averraged 16.2 po oints and 7.6 rebounds per game. He shot 6 60.1% from th he floor and 666.8% from th he free throw w line, leadingg him to be named d a two‐time All‐ACC perfoormer and tw wo‐time All‐Am merican. Reid d was also named d ACC Rookie e of the Year aafter his first season. After three season ns with the Taar Heels, Reid d was selected d by the Charrlotte Hornetss A Draft. Follo owing his firstt season in with the #5 overall draft pick in the 1989 NBA otte in which he averaged 11.1 points aand 8.4 rebou unds per game, Reid was Charlo named d to the NBA All‐Rookie Teeam. Coook helped gu uide the 2010 0‐2011 squad to a fifth placce finish in the e CIAA North . Cook is from m Beaver Fallss, Pennsylvan nia and atte ended Slipperry Rock State University, now Slippery R Rock Universiity, in Pennsylvania. He e was a three year starter on the SRU fo ootball team.. During those e thre ee years the tteam won Weestern Pennsyylvania Confeerence footbaall titles, one Pennsylvania Staate Championnship title and d played in the Alonzo Staggg Bowl. Cook k servved as an assistant under H Head Coach D Dan DeRose aat Communityy College of Beaver County in n Monaca, Peennsylvania frrom 2004 to 2 2008. During that time the e WPCC regular season and cconference to ournament Titans won five cconsecutive W championships aand played in the PCAA Staate Champion nship game fivve years in a w. They won tw wo state cham mpionship tittles, and weree state runner‐ups for row thre ee years. Succcess continueed at the Regiion XX Tournaament wheree the Titans won n two Regionaal Titles in a rrow in 2005 aand 2006.
