Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

MEET THE COACHES HEAD COACH MAT PHELPS
Mat Phelps has been the head men's soccer coach for the past four seasons at Chowan. The 2012 squad finished with a 2-16 overall record with wins over Washington Adventist and Marymount. Under Phelps’ direction, Dale Pearson and Antonio Carrabotta were named to the First and Second Team All-Independent Collegiate Athletic Association team respectively. Phelps was a four-year starter and captain for the men's soccer program at Hope International University in Fullerton, California. While attending HIU, Phelps developed his love for teaching the sport of soccer at Don Lugo High School, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons. After graduation from HIU in 2004, Phelps accepted an assistant coaching position at Redlands High School in Redlands, California. He served as the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach where he helped guide the program to 28 wins over two seasons. Phelps also coached the U-19 Silver-Elite boys’ soccer team for the Titans Football Club in Inland Empire, California until accepting the position at Chowan. Phelps holds an advanced national diploma through the NSCAA. He and his wife, Joy, have two daughters, Abigail (5), Eden (2) and infant son, Benjamin.

Chowan University stands in the old Albemarle region of North Carolina between the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner of the state. The Murfreesboro area was first settled during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the principal inhabitants were several Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes. Today, the stately old homes seem to whisper of the storied colonial and antebellum days. Murfreesboro is located approximately 60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. Murfreesboro is the location of the boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed, discoverer of the cure for yellow fever, and home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and special events are offered throughout the year by local groups.
