CHOWAN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PRE‐SEASON PREVIEW 2011‐2012 Head Coach Patrick Mashuda enters his eighth season at the helm of the Chowan University Women’s Basketball program. Last year, the Hawks finished with a 15‐13 record, including going 11‐7 in CIAA play. They finished in a four‐way tie for first place in the CIAA North Division, and earned the #4 seed for the conference tournament. Chowan won their first ever tournament game with a thrilling 56‐53 victory over Livingstone College. Ransheda Jennings and Talaya Lynch each had standout seasons for the Hawks a year ago. Jennings compiled team highs with 16.4 ppg, 2.8 spg, and 0.6 bpg. Jennings finished the season ranked second in the CIAA in steals, fourth in scoring, and fifth in free throw percentage. She was named to the All‐CIAA team and CIAA All‐ Tournament team. Lynch led Chowan with 7.1 rpg and 48 three pointers made. She finished third in the CIAA in minutes per game, fourth in three‐pointers per game, and tenth in scoring. Lynch was also named to the All‐CIAA team. Along with Jennings and Lynch, the Hawks return Danielle Coleman, who started 26 games last season. An efficient player and defensive presence, Coleman shot 44.9% from the field and had 12 blocked shots a season ago. Mashuda’s group was ravaged by injuries last year, so they return a slew of players who saw minimal action but have potential to be key parts of the program. Sophomores Kiara Turner and Courtney Knight return to action after only playing a combined 24 games last season due to injuries. Turner averaged 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in her limited time on the court. Knight scored 4.1 ppg and grabbed 3.4 rpg. The Hawks will rely on a large freshman class this season. Chowan brought in eight freshmen from three states for the 2011‐2012 campaign. A pair of high school teammates will be looked upon to give the Hawks some depth. From Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge, VA come Kaela Nelson and Courtney Smith. Combined, they averaged over 16 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists per game. Mashuda will also count on 6’3 freshman Summer Curtis to bulk up the Hawks’ frontcourt. Curtis averaged 13 points, 14 rebounds, and seven blocks per game as a senior at Clover Hill High School in Richmond, VA. The 2011‐2012 schedule for Chowan includes a handful of tough matchups. The Hawks face a Division I opponent (Norfolk State University), a Final Four team from a year ago (Shaw University), and the 2010‐2011 Division II National Champions (Clayton State University). In all, Chowan will play 16 CIAA games and 10 non‐ conference games. Seven of the 10 out of conference games will be on the road. Chowan tips off the season in Shippensburg, PA at the Shippensburg University Tournament. In their first game, the Hawks will take on the University of Charleston (WV). Interesting Facts about CU Women’s Basketball • Last season, Chowan twice came back from 19 point deficits to win. They were down 19 to Bowie State University in the regular season and again to Livingstone College in the CIAA Tournament. • The Hawks’ 56‐53 comeback victory over Livingstone College in the CIAA Tournament marked the first Tournament win for Chowan in its brief history in the CIAA. • Chowan won five games in a ten day stretch in 2010‐2011. From January 22nd to January 31st, the Hawks reeled off five CIAA wins in a row.
