A Makeup Artist – The Career Opportunities Today there is a lot of potential for a makeup artist to achieve a good living and a GOOD makeup artist can earn as much as a lawyer earns in a year, it just depends on how hard and how *smart* you work in your profession. The best start is by attending a makeup training course through a reputable makeup academy. One of the *desirable* aspects of makeup work is to get a job in the Television or film industry – this can include working for a magazine, on a TV set, at a modelling or marketing agency or on a movie set. Your job is to prepare the performers for their role based on their situation and needs. It can be as simple as dusting on some foundation during the breaks of a TV show to a fast paced makeup session for a catwalk– ensuring every model is ready to walk the runway. To work in this area you need to be artistic and creative – your job may be to make actors look older or younger, to have injuries or scars or to even look like monsters. Another option is to work in the Salon or spa industry. Your role here is customer service, to make your customers look and feel good. Don’t underestimate this job, it’s not petty or cushy and it can be quite stressful. It is a growing industry with people looking for relaxing weekend getaways. If you have taken the right makeup training courses and you have experience you can even open up your own business.
Another avenue you can consider after leaving the makeup academy is to work in retail. This involves working either as a direct sales consultant or behind the counter in a department store. Cosmetic retailers in department stores will hire makeup artists to sell their range of cosmetics as they know with makeup academy training behind you, you have the knowledge and skills they need. Here you’ll get to suggest looks and match cosmetics to the right skin tone and colour. The cosmetic brand uses your knowledge to sell their product, but you gain expertise by learning how to communicate with customers effectively and THAT is an important skill to have. There is a huge range of makeup industry jobs out there – just waiting for the right person. It all boils down to your makeup academy qualifications, your passion and your interest for specific makeup industry areas. You can also opt to work as a freelancer – have your portfolio ready to go, print out some name cards with all your details as a makeup artist and pass those cards around to friends and family and at local businesses, bridal boutiques and hair salons.
