The focus of this project was to design a residential home for a couple. The husband was a writer and the wife was a musician. They both worked from home so the design included a writing studio and a music studio. They also have frequent house guests over for musical performances and story readings. Outdoor spaces were very important in the design because the husband and the wife enjoy spending time outdoors. The design was born from the concept of tranquility and nature. Tranquility is a calming feeling that one experiences when they become unified with their natural environment. A major goal of the design was to unify the outdoor environment with the living and working spaces of the house. The design features several strategic openings to bring nature and the feeling of tranquility into the house.

ZEN TOWER

This project focused on the design of a “Zen Tower for the Greatly Overworked Student”. A student would use this building for 24 to 48 hours to relax and relieve themselves of their stresses. The program had to include a living room, a bathroom, and a bedroom. The footprint of the building was limited to a 12’ by 12’ area and the height limit was 48 feet. I drew inﬂuences from minimalist designs in modern Japanese architecture. The initial design concept on the Japanese aesthetic principle of wabi sabi or “beauty in imperfection”. To achieve wabi sabi in the design, the possibility of cantilevering each level of the building was explored. This exploration also led to an increase in usable building area. The ﬁnal design was a product of offsetting shifting building cubes to create livable spaces.

This was not a design project, but a group precedent study. The study focused on the structural design of Glen Murcutt’s Simpson Lee House in Mt. Wilson, Australia. The requirements for the study were to build a section model at 1/2”=1’ scale and then each member draw a different wall section of the building. I contributed to the building of the section model with another group member.

The program for this project was an artist’s gallery/studio. The project site was located in the Heritage Park area of Fort Worth, Texas. The city planner indicated that the development of the Heritage Park area would follow the same path as the city of Vancouver. Developing the water front was very important and creating a pathway along the water was also equally important. The design concept was formed by analyzing the site’s surrounding context, most notably, the bridge. The design’s initial shape was taken from the shape of the site’s adjacent bridge. The curvature of the design as well as the orientation allows for ample to natural sunlight to illuminate the artist galleries on the upper two levels. The artist’s studios are located on the 3 lower levels of the building to open them up to the waterfront pathway and allow for public interaction.

This project was for study abroad and was located in Montreal, Canada. The building site was an empty parking lot located in Old Montreal. The program was a library/ gallery/museum that would act as a node in Montreal. The focus of the library, gallery, museum space was Montreal street art. Street art and graffiti are a large part of the urban culture of Montreal. In almost every section of the city, there is artwork to be found. These pieces range from small amateur tags to very large scale commissioned projects. Old Montreal is different from the rest of the city; however, it has very little, if any pieces of graffiti. This building will act as a node for graffiti within Old Montreal. It will be a place to study graffiti and to practice graffiti techniques. The existing brick wall on the building site will serve as the public’s canvas for self expression. This graffiti will not be relegated to a dirty alleyway, but instead be on display for the public to enjoy. The library will focus on cataloging different types of graffiti, while the exhibition will focus on showing the evolution of graffiti from a form of urban expression to a piece of formal artwork.
