I would recommend this book to anyone who likes teenage fiction. My one complaint is that I didn’t hear enough about Ravi’s ambition to be a writer. I wish the author talked more about young writers and the struggles they face.

Enjoy it. It will make you see protestors in a very different way.

Blackspot on Roses Some rose varieties, like ‘The Mayflower’ or the species rose Rosa rugosa, are able to resist Blackspot. And another good trick is to plant clumps of chives under roses: their roots exude a pungent white liquid which acts as a fungicide, building up in the rose’s system and after a couple of years helping keep Blackspot at bay.

T

ackle Blackspot on roses as soon as you notice the ugly black lesions begin to spread across leaves. This nasty and very persistent fungal disease often takes hold in summer, particularly after long spells of damp weather, and it’ll defoliate and seriously weaken your plants if you let it.

Spray early on, before the disease gets a hold, and you’ll keep on top of the problem from the start. In Woodborough Garden Centre you’ll find a range of products to help you blitz the blotch: it’s a good idea to switch between several formulations so you tackle all the various Blackspot strains. Spray every three to four weeks and you’ll be covered (always follow manufacturers’ instructions).

You can prevent infection next year with good hygiene. Blackspot overwinters on fallen leaves, so clear up rose leaves this autumn and bin or burn them - the fungus will survive a compost heap.

What to do in the garden during August: There is still plenty to be getting on with in the garden whilst making the most of those long summer evenings; • Cut back on your hardy Geraniums that have finished flowering, to avoid a lot of seeding about the place.

• Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well.

• Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year.

• Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact.

• Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them).

• Finally, sit down, relax and enjoy your hard work!

• Dare I say it but - spring flowering bulbs will be available soon!

You need to plan ahead to get the best pick of the lot. Tulips, Allium, Narcissus of all sorts, little ‘uns like Chionodoxa and Scillas, Fritillaria, Hyacinths (particularly the bedding ones which are for outdoor growing – the ‘prepared’ ones for indoor bowls come along later), mixed packs based on colour themes or for scent – loads to choose from. Alliums look particularly pretty amongst their cousin, Nectaroscordum which have creamy-green hanging bells that fade to lilac on tall 1 metre stems.
