THE

Book Club ‘The Sleeping Army’

by Francesca Simon Freya lives in modern Britain but with a twist. This is a world where Christianity does not exist, instead the people worship Norse and Viking gods. Her parents are in the middle of splitting up and she is torn by their conflict. The story sucks the reader in from the first page, with its references to her usual visits to her Dad on ‘Thorsdays’.

Freya’s Dad works in the British Museum as a night security guard. After a misunderstanding between her parents, she finds herself on a night shift with him. She wanders the museum and is drawn to the ancient Viking and Wodenism displays. She unwittingly breaks a spell held over ‘The Lewis Chessmen’ by blowing into ‘Heimdall’s Horn’.

She is sucked into an adventure when she ‘wakes’ the four Chess pieces from their enchantment and is sucked with them through a magical vortex.

Together they must fight their way through a death defying mission to save the gods. They encounter scary foes along the way, including dragons and giants.

Freya must succeed if she is ever to return home again.

The story is compelling and magical. It moves quickly and engages the reader completely. There is plenty of dialogue to speed the tale along. The characters are well rounded and sympathetic. There are great touches of humour through-out which eases the tension, for example a giant man named ‘Snot the Beserk’. Francesca Simon also uses imagery to tease the imagination, for example the idea of an eight legged horse.

The book is a great read, history without being dry. It also leads to some thought provoking questions, like how our world would be if the Viking culture had prevailed and Christianity did not exist. It is a fast tale, a page turning saga and would suit children of 8+.

‘Florence & Giles’

by John Harding This is a gem of a book with a persuasive hook in the voice of its narrator Florence.

Her idiosyncratic language plays beautifully throughout this wonderfully crafted story.

Florence’s voice is evocative and unique pulling the reader deep into her strange world.

An orphan, she lives in a huge isolated house with her little brother Giles and an array of servants. She’s a sleep walker and a deep thinker. Hungry for literacy, she secretly teaches herself to read using the library in her home. As a female, she is banned from learning the craft by her guardian, her mysterious uncle.

When the children’s world is invaded by a sinister governess, who seems to harbour dark thoughts about little Giles, Florence determines to keep him safe.

This gothic tale is loaded with supernatural imagery, ghostly corridors, odd characters and terrifying governesses.

The story twists and turns elegantly, racing to a page-turning finale. This book is an amazing read.

However, for me it is Florence’s incredible voice which resonates so strongly that finishing the book is a true sorrow.
