H

enry Aldridge and Son are established in the South West of England as a premier auction rooms for the sale of Antiques, Collectables, rare and unusual items. In November they sold a unique letter written at the battle of Rorkes Drift for £15000. However they are known all over the world for the sale of memorabilia from the Titanic.

Although the Titanic sank nearly 103 years ago, demand for memorabilia from her shows little sign of abating. A mystique has built up around the story since her demise on a cold April night in 1912 with the loss of 1517 lives. Ironically though is was not until Walter Lord’s film a Night to Remember was realised in 1958 that the story was brought back to the attention of the media in general. Several films came and went after what is still seen by many as the definitive movie on the subject. Until in 1998 James Cameron’s Titanic broke all box office records and took the world by storm taking the subject to a new audience.

Henry Aldridge and Son are the leading auctioneers in the world of Titanic and White Star Line Memorabilia. They have over 10000 collectors from all over the globe on their database who specialise in all variety of Titanic, Liner and Transport collectables.

Prices of the rarest material have risen over the years due to the scarcity of the most unusual items from the ship. The most valuable are generally from the ship itself such as letters, menus or on-board souvenirs, they can range from £10000 to over £1m depending on importance.

However it is possible to purchase an original piece of memorabilia such as a postcard from 1912 from as little as £100.

Collectables from the White Star Line, the owners of Titanic are also a good way to buy an original piece of the story.

There are numerous items in the sale such The Deathless Story of the Titanic and The Daily Graphic that are estimated at £30£50. These are newspapers from shortly after the sinking also some ephemera can be bought for less than £100, all are original parts from the Titanic story and contemporary to the era.

Interest in memorabilia from both Titanic and the White Star Line shows little sign of easing with demand for the rarest pieces breaking record upon record. The most single valuable piece of Titanic paperwork sold was a remarkable 32ft long plan of the Titanic used at the British Titanic Enquiry that sold in Devizes for over £220000. WINTER GARDENING - WITH WOODBOROUGH GARDEN CENTRE

H

ere are a few things that you can be getting on with, weather permitting. Some Clematis will need attention about now. The easiest ones to deal with are the Group 3 Clematis, that is to say the lateflowering ones like viticellas eg. Clematis viticella ‘Polish Spirit’, the texensis types eg. Clematis texensis ‘Duchess of Albany’, species types like orientalis and tangutica and all herbaceous ones eg. Clematis integrifolia. These all flower on new wood grown from spring into summer so all you need to do is to cut them right back to about 30-60cm just above a pair of leaf buds.

Group 2 Clematis are the large hybrid types, some of which are doubles but repeat later in the season with single flowers, whilst others have flowers the size of dinner plates.

Either way they flower from late May until the end of summer. They flower from the buds produced on last year’s stems and often repeat with a smaller number of flowers that come from the growth made this year. Examples are many popular favourites like ‘Nelly Moser’, ‘Burma Star’, ‘Guernsey Cream’, ‘Doctor Ruppel’, ‘Carnaby’, ‘H.F.Young’, ‘Mrs N.Thompson’, ‘Warsaw Nike’, ‘Niobe’, ‘Duchess of Edinburgh’, ‘Josephine’, ‘Kiri de Kanawa’, ‘Multi-Blue’ and ‘Vyvyan Pennell’.

Do not go hacking and slashing at these or you’ll lose all the early flowers and maybe the later ones as well! Instead, take out any dead and weak wood and reduce the rest to the top pair of buds. Tie in the new growth that is made as the season progresses for the later flowers to appear.

Group 1 Clematis are the earliest to flower so these include montanas eg. ‘Tetrarose’, ‘Broughton Star’, ‘Marjorie’, ‘Elizabeth’ and grandiflora; alpinas eg. ‘Pamela Jackman’, ‘Francis Rivis’, ‘Frankie’, ‘Burford White’ and ‘Blue Dancer’ ; macropetalas such as ‘Pauline’, ‘Markham’s Pink’, ‘Blue Bird’, ‘Jan Linmark’ and ‘Lagoon’. Leave these alone until after they have flowered and then you can give them a bit of a tidy up by shearing them over and removing any dead or damaged growth.

The same applies to all the evergreen Clematis such as armandii and cirrhosa.

These sometimes outgrow their allotted space but heavy pruning in one go can finish them off completely so better to spread it out over several seasons if you need to.

Opinion is divided with regard to newly planted Clematis but suffice it to say that Clematis expert Raymond Evison says that all Clematis planted last year should be cut back hard in their first full spring unless they have a vast number of strong stems emanating from the base. It may be that the thing will not flower very well after this but it will make a stronger and more vigorous plant that will make up for it in subsequent years. All Clematis are thirsty and hungry and will repay regular feeding and watering from early spring through summer.

To m ato Sou p INGREDIENTS 2kg/4lb 4oz mixed ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 1 handful fresh basil leaves, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp tomato purée 4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to serve 1 litre/1¾ pints hot vegetable stock salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-3 tbsp caster sugar, to taste 150ml/5fl oz double cream, plus extra to serve METHOD 1. Heat a large, heavy-based saucepan over a medium to high heat. When the pan is hot, add the tomatoes and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until they have started to break down.

2. Add the garlic, basil, tomato purée and two tablespoons of olive oil. Continue to cook for a further 1-2 minutes.

3. Pour in the vegetable stock, bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering. Simmer for 3-4 minutes.

4. Transfer the soup mixture to a food processor and blend to a purée.

5. Return the blended soup to the pan and season, to taste, with salt, freshly ground black pepper and sugar.

6. Pour in the cream and return the mixture to a simmer. Continue to simmer for a further 1-2 minutes.

Twice a Hero Phil Tomkins This book ‘Twice a Hero’ came about at the urging of the author’s four children, all were born and raised in England, He ventures into the genealogy of our Irish side of his family. Eventually He came to the maternal line, the Adamsons of Moate, Co. Westmeath. He

remembers little of the stories told to him by his grandmother, her sister Lucy and his great grandmother about his granduncle George who had fought in The Great War and the Irish War of Independence. Enquiries in the area eventually led to his burial place in the disused Dunegan Cemetery in Mount Temple, just outside Moate.

Unable to find any trace of his grave in the wilderness the author was confronted with, he resolved to find out about this man, his own kith and kin, this obscure ancestor and if possible, write his story before it was lost forever to his children, family and history.
