The Black Swan Hotel has 12 en-suite bedrooms.

The history of the Black Swan dates well back before the actual building that you see. The cellar is said to have been built prior to 1600, once being part of a lavish network of tunnels, spreading underneath the town.

The hotel itself was built in the 18th century, once owned by an alleged highwayman, Ambrose Saintsbury. The gallows were positioned opposite, where many thieves and vagabonds lost their lives.

Our very own Masonic Function Room was once the Court of Judgement and a meeting place for the local Free-masons and Traders.

In 1700 the building was rebuilt and renamed the Sergeant’s Head.

The proprietor at the time was Francis Paradise the younger, a former sergeant of the mace to the town’s major.

The cellars have five chambers which lead off from a central passage, the rear now being blocked off denying access to what is believed to be some extra 100 or so feet of further underground tunnels, leading to a labyrinth of secret passageways, under the streets and towards Devizes Castle.

There is a story of a highway man who was reputed to have kept his horses stabled in one of these tunnels. The story states that this man lad a double life; he actually was a well respected man about town!

A figure of a man on horseback has been sighted in spirit and a lady wearing a long black dress and a white cap have been captured on film, but don’t think these were only historical stories, these have only been a few of recent claims here at the Black Swan Hotel.

Dazzling Dogs and Cats was set up in 2011 by Pet Stylist Charlotte Anning to offer a friendly well priced caring grooming environment. Since opening the business has enjoyed rapid growth along with the introduction of a cat grooming service. The salon currently operates from a dedicated, fitted business unit on the Avonside Enterprise Park in Melksham. The location is key in that it offers free accessible parking and is situated close the town centre. There are currently two full time pet stylists in the salon Charlotte Anning who has been grooming for over 8 years throughout Hampshire and Nicola Rawlins who has recently completed her level 3 City and Guilds qualification in Dog Grooming.

The salon is open from Monday to Saturday offering a variety of different appointment times. Charlotte Anning states “We like to think what we offer is different, as a working mum I understand just how hard it can be to juggle daily life and appointments. Therefore I designed my business around the customer offering morning, evening and weekend appointments. We also offer a variety of contact options such as text messaging, email or telephone. Customers are welcome to call at the salon for a chat about services at any time. We offer online booking 24/7 via our website and reminders for bookings are sent by both text message and email something which has proved popular.”

Dazzling Dogs & Cats offer a variety of services including bath and dry options, coat clipping, hand stripping and our all-inclusive service which includes bathing, drying, clipping, scissoring, nail clipping and much more. The business also offers discounts for regular customers and a pet of the month award for the most well behaved pets. All services are offered to both cats and dogs no matter how big or small, Dazzling Dogs are also experts with both nervous and elderly pets as well as puppies.

The salon uses top quality Animology Shampoos and Conditioners and never uses cage dryers, all animals are dried by hand with lots of TLC.
