‘Before I Go To Sleep’ by S J Watson This is a psychological thriller, skilfully written so the reader is never quite sure who is who or what is what. Christine has amnesia. Every night when she goes to sleep her memory is wiped clean. Every morning is a voyage of terrifying discovery. She wakes in a bed she does not recognise, next to a man she does not know. Each new day she thinks she is a different age. She has terrible shocks seeing her matured reflection in the bathroom mirror. She is totally dependent on the man who explains each day that he is her husband. He carefully places photos and notes around the bathroom mirror so that she might understand who they are when she wakes. Christine is keeping a secret journal; she is phoned each day by a man instructing her where to find it. The journal helps her to understand herself and her life. However, the more she fills in, the more confused she becomes. This book is a page turner, a plot twister. It plays with our perceptions of Christine and the other characters in the book. As reader, you know she is in danger but you are never quite sure why or from whom. I urge you to read this book before it becomes a film. Cinema will never capture Christine’s emotions and turmoil or the
secrets bubbling beneath the surface of her life. ‘Room’ by Emma Donaghue This is a unique book, utterly readable and impossible to put down. It is narrated by Jack, a five year old boy who knows only life in ‘Room’. His ‘voice’ is incredibly strong, his language palpable. He sucks the reader into his world with words and concepts alien to us, yet strangely familiar. He manages to convey his world to us despite not having the depth of vocabulary to explain. The overview of the book is the fact that he has been born in captivity. With his Mother, the victim of a kidnapping, they are trapped by a sinister man. Jack has never been outside of ‘Room’. Despite this seemingly hopeless scenario, his Mother has provided as full a life as possible for him. Their story is so strong, their bond so deep that as a reader you are utterly hooked. Emma Donoghue has managed to get right inside the mind of this child and to transcribe his story with infinite care. I thoroughly recommend this book. Despite its themes being dark, it is inspirational and thought provoking from the first to the last page.

ctober brings a fantastic display for those gardens that have plants that give Autumn foliage. You really notice the change in temperature and the shorter days which makes the sunny days even more important It is a great time to visit gardens that have Autumn colour such as Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire. Neighbours of mine regularly visit the Eastern seaboard in the USA where the colours are spectacular. Things to do: Rake up fallen leaves and either place them on the compost or pile them up to make leaf mould. Dig over empty beds incorporate as much organic matter as possible to improve the structure of the soil. Finish planting evergreen shrubs Give conifer hedges a last trim for the winter sets in. Plants new climbers and perennials. Lift and store dahlias, gladioli and summer flowering bulbs. Cut down the dying tops of perennial vegetables. Insulate the greenhouse if you don’t have a heater get one if you do have check that its in working order. Insulate the inside of your greenhouse with bubble polythene or any other insulating material that lets light through. It is probably your last chance to sow grass seed. Pick up the last of your apples and pears before they get damaged. Only store fruit that is not damaged or diseased Lift and store potatoes and carrots in a dry and darkish cool place. You should start to prepare the ground for planting bare rooted stock for next month. Sow sweet peas for next year under cover. It is best to do all the jobs in the garden sooner rather than later as with the shortening days you will only have a limited time to get things done Plant trees at this time of the year while the soil is warm for the

Secure any climbers or any other plants that are vulnerable to the winds of Autumn. Plant container grown climbers. Plant up n e w herbaceous perennials and lift and divide overgrown and plant. Lift and store dahlia tubers. Put netting over your ponds to prevent debris from falling in and if you are lucky enough the same goes to the swimming pool. Lift and store tender summer - flowering bulbs. Good time now to go to your garden centre and buy plants that give a good winter colour. It is a good time to tidy up that pond before the water gets too cold. With an established lawn rake out thatch, aerate and top – dress. Finish planting Autumn onion sets. Sow broad beans but cover them with cloches in colder parts of the country. Lift parsley and mint and pot to put on the window sill. Water the plants in the greenhouse and indoor plants less. Constantly remove any yellow leaves from and around plants as this encourages disease and pests. In the greenhouse grow radishes, mustard and cress for winter salad either in pots or recycle those tomato grow bags.
