The young entrepreneur had a vision for a one stop transport shop, but at the time we were 2 years into a deep recession. However with a strong identity and brand, plus the sheer determination of the owner, Zelf has developed the business to a point where they now have over 8000 sqft of storage for their Self Storage, Mobile Storage units and their removals & storage arm of the business.

Managing Director Kevin Harris said “We started the business with one van that we hired out and did the odd removal job, but in 5 years we have grown the fleet to 15 vans and 5 employees.

We now have a fleet manager to grow the business through setting up corporate acounts. The thing that we have noticed is that during the recession companies downsized their fleets and now that the market is becoming stronger, these businesses have larger demands and need vans and cars to transport people and items, either themselves or through us.

We have noticed a sharp increase in new business and have developed hopefully long-lasting bonds with existing clients.”

INGREDIENTS 1 small onion 1 large carrot 2 cloves of garlic 2 pinches of dried Oregano 400g minced beef 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tbsp Worcester Sauce 30ml red wine 1 tin chopped tomatoes Handful of dried bread crumbs For the Sauce 25g of butter and plain flour 300ml milk Pinch nutmeg 60g Cheddar 30g Parmesan

6. Add the tinned tomatoes and allow to simmer for 2-3 minutes.

7. Finally add a splash of milk.

METHOD 1. Fry chopped onion, grated carrot and garlic together.

2. Season with oregano, Worcester sauce, salt and pepper.

3. Once the onion has softened, make a well in the centre of the mix and add the meat. Stir the meat to break up.

4. Add tomato puree and cook for 30 seconds.

5. Continue cooking until the meat has browned add the wine.

For the Sauce: 1. Make a roux with the melted butter and flour.

2. Add milk, 100ml at a time and whisking as you go to prevent lumps. When all the milk is added, add the cheese. Stir gently.

3. Finally season with salt and pepper and nutmeg.

- When you have constructed your Lasagne (meat layer, pasta layer, sauce layer, then repeat) sprinkle more cheese on top and add a few dried bread crumbs. They give a lovely extra texture. Cook at 225°C for 25 minutes. Sprinkle freshly chopped corriander just before serving.

As the leaves begin to turn a beautiful shade of orange it is time to make sure new trees, shrubs, roses, fruit and herbaceous perennials are planted before the end of October. This will give them a really good start, putting down its roots before the winter comes along.

Start by surveying your own patch. How did it do this year? What did well and what didn’t. The things that didn’t, need some serious thought.

Did you plant them correctly? I ask this because planting techniques seem to be a bit hit and miss, I’m sorry to say. Some people just dig a hole and bung the thing in – live or die, they say, which might not be the best approach!

The root system is the key. When you take the plant out of the pot, whatever it is, look at the rootball. Some plants like herbaceous stuff, will have a lot of fibrous roots which have sometimes formed a thick, almost impenetrable mass. This usually indicates that the plant has been in the pot for quite some time and if left like that, will simply not thrive. Tease things about the place with your fingers, underneath as well, to encourage new root development. On occasion, the fingers might not do the trick, in which case get a knife and run it down the sides of the root mass.

With shrubs and trees, there might be thicker pale coloured roots visible on the surface of the compost. If these are running around in circles, and if left like that, they will simply continue to go around, not actually developing anything new. Try very hard not to break any of these but
