St Margaret’s – A Nurturing Environment for Children

S

t Margaret’s Preparatory School is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years, sharing a site with St Mary’s School, Calne.

Children generally start life in the Kindergarten which offers a safe and stimulating nursery environment for 3 and 4 year old children. The focus is on nurturing and building the children’s confidence to make the move to the Reception classes the following year far less daunting. Creative skills are nurtured and encouraged through painting, drama and musical activity. There are also plenty of opportunities to swim, dance, play games and just have fun!

The school aims to be as flexible as possible to fit in with family and work demands and can offer full or part day sessions in the Kindergarten as well as an after-school club until 6.00pm for all children in the school. Holiday clubs are also offered to provide additional support to parents.

Sarah Waters (Virago)

Sarah Waters has been short-listed for the Man Booker prize three times, and her new novel, set in the period shortly after the Great War, confirms her mastery of historical and literary romance. In the aftermath of the war Frances and her widowed mother ruefully accept their reduced circumstances and take in lodgers – a young married couple of the ‘clerk class’.

While the outcome does not come as a complete surprise it is in no way a foregone conclusion.

Waters inserts some plausible turns – hardly convoluted enough to be called ‘twists’ – into the otherwise straightforward narrative, and allows minor characters to contribute a realistic messiness and uncertainty to this compelling and atmospheric novel.

Frances had been picturing her lodgers in purely mercenary terms – as something like two great waddling shillings. But this, she thought, was what it really meant to have paying guests: this odd, unintimate proximity, this rather peeled-back moment, where the only thing between herself and a naked Mrs Barber was a few feet of kitchen and a thin scullery door.

Life in a genteel South London suburb in the early 1920s is evoked confidently and effectively, with fluent dialogue conveying

In The Children Act he focusses on issues of legality, ethics and morality, and the potential conflicts between them. Fiona Maye, a High Court judge is called upon to try the case of a minor who, with his parents, is refusing life-saving medical treatment on religious grounds.

While her professional life and status are successful and fulfilling, Fiona’s private, personal life is slowly being slowly shredded, with her marriage on the brink of collapse. The ruling she hands down creates emotional repercussions for the judge and for the young man in the case. Restrained, elegant writing evokes the constraints of the law, and the way the legal process is designed to establish clarity, shedding light on the issues rather than providing human comfort.

Although all about a judgement, the book is non-judgemental. Fiona’s personal life and the balance between her professional success and private disappointment is considered and described as fully as the processes by which Fiona reaches her decision in court.

However, although the judge remains objective in her consideration of the case, author and reader are engaged and concerned as she comes to accept her lack of control in her marriage and emotions. A slim, satisfying and precise novel.

About the Authors...

SARAH WATERS was born in Wales in 1966.

She has a Ph.D. in English Literature and has been an associate lecturer with the Open University.

She has written five novels: Tipping the Velvet (1998), which won the Betty Trask Award; Affinity (1999), which won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the Mail on Sunday / John Llewellyn Rhys Prize; Fingersmith (2002), which was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize, and won the South Bank Show Award for Literature and the CWA Historical Dagger; The Night Watch (2006), which was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize; and The Little Stranger (2009), which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the South Bank Show Literature Award.

She was included in Granta’s prestigious list of ‘Best of Young British Novelists 2003’, and in the same year was voted Author of the Year by both publishers and booksellers at the British Book Awards and the BA Conference, and won the Waterstone’s Author of the Year Award.

IAN MCEWAN studied at the University of Sussex, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970. He received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia.

He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his first collection of short stories First Love, Last Rites; the Whitbread Novel Award (1987) and the Prix Fémina Etranger (1993) for The Child in Time; and Germany’s Shakespeare Prize in 1999. He has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction numerous times, winning the award for Amsterdam in 1998. His novel Atonement received the WH Smith Literary Award (2002), National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award (2003), Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003), and the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004). He was awarded a CBE in 2000. In 2006, he won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel Saturday, and his novel On Chesil Beach was named Galaxy Book of the Year at the 2008 British Book Awards. McEwan has been named the Reader’s Digest Author of the Year for 2008, the 2010 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award, and in 2011 was awarded the Jerusalem Prize.

hese can be a little fiddly - particularly if you choose to do mini scotch eggs, using quail eggs - to peel the shell from the softly boiled eggs.

I like the yolk in my scotch eggs to be ‘tacky’ rather than runny or firm. Obviously you can boil the eggs to your preferred yolk consistency.

INGREDIENTS (MAKES 4) 4 Eggs, hard boiled for 5 mins 25g Plain flour, seasoned 5 Jumbo Sausages, skin removed 1 Egg, lightly beaten Breadcrumbs (or experiment with different coiatings sesame seeds for example make a good alternate.)

METHOD 1. Boil the eggs to your desired yolk consistency. Place eggs in ice cold water to arrest the cooking process.

2. The shell the eggs. The softer your boil the more delicate an operation this becomes.

3. Preheat the oven to 200ºC /Gas Mark 6 and line a small baking tray with parchment paper.

4. A production line starting from right to left is needed to do this job efficiently. Have each ingredient in a bowl, starting with the shelled eggs, plain flour, 5 sausages, chopping board with clingfilm, bowl of beaten egg, bowl of stuffing mix and the prepared baking tray.

5. Flatten one and a bit sausage between two pieces of cling film until it’s about 10cm in diameter. Place a floured egg in centre, bring the sausage meat up around the egg using the clingfilm to coax it into place.

6. Unwrap, fill in any gaps and dip into the beaten egg mixture.

Roll the scotch egg until it is fully coated with egg (the egg is the glue that binds the breadcrumbs). Roll the egg in thebreadcrumbs and lay your finished scotch egg onto the baking sheet. Do this with all your eggs.

7. Give them a light brushing or spray of oil and then place in a preheated oven for 25 minutes.

- If you have a deep fat fryer you can use a combination of fryer and oven to get a golden finish to your breadcrumbs.

onthly Tip – if you are having difficulty keeping a Basil plant going then you’re probably over or under-watering it. Keep Basil on the kitchen windowsill, sitting in a saucer, water it from underneath rather than on top and throw away the residue. That way, it does not get soaked but takes up enough water to carry on producing those delicious leaves – and they do not like to dry out.

Let the Chrysanthemums perk your pots up...

After all this gorgeous, dry weather, it is likely your garden is looking a little jaded. You’ll probably need a few bits to perk the place up and keep it going into autumn. What better than our home-grown potted Chrysanthemums?

They make low domes of colour and are probably most useful popped into pots by doors or seating areas. They are grown in large 3 litre plastic pots so you can just sit the plastic one inside a nice terracotta or ceramic one of your own. Deadheading will prolong the flowering and they should see you through until the first of the cold weather.

All the summer-bedding is well and truly over now and is replaced with a beautiful display of winter pansies and violas. Along with the spring bulbs, these are the mainstays of winter planting. If your pots of summer stuff look a sight, turf the lot out and replant with some new, fresh plants – don’t hang on thinking you can renew the life-force with copious amounts of fertilizer or the like – once they’re over, they’re over!
