Vaccination – so much more than an injection.

here are lots of nasty diseases out there that our pets can catch. Vaccinations are the best way to protect our pets from these.

We recommend vaccination in line with the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Guidelines. Puppies should have injections at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks and kittens at 9 weeks and 12 weeks. We recommend this is followed by an annual health assessment and booster injection.

Vaccinations can protect your dog against a range of diseases, including:  Parvovirus  Parainfluenza  Distemper  Adenovirus  Leptospirosis  Kennel cough

Cats are commonly vaccinated against:  Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus)  Feline infectious enteritis  Feline leukaemia virus These diseases are now relatively uncommon. But this is mainly due to the widespread vaccination regime in operation. In areas where pets are not routinely vaccinated these diseases are common and often fatal.

Pet owners have told us there is nothing worse than going through the trauma of losing a pet to an illness that could have been avoided through a simple vaccination. We

would always advocate that prevention is better than cure.

hilst usually the coldest month in the year, surprisingly enough January is a great time to be in the garden. It is a time to really appreciate plants that do flower, that have great bark or interesting foliage. It is a good time to spot those holes that need filling for the coming seasons.

The new seed catalogues are out for the spring, January is a best time to sit down with a cup of tea and decide what you want to grow next year. Order it as soon as possible before their seed banks are depleted.

Start planning what summer bulbs you would like.

Towards the end of this month you can start sowing some early crops but they will have to have a heated greenhouse or propagator. Sow the seeds of berrying trees and shrubs, but they will need a period of cold to break their dormancy.

Sow small quantities of lettuce, summer cabbages and cauliflowers, radishes, carrots, spinach, salad onions, turnips, peas and broad beans. You can start with all these on the windowsill then growing them on somewhere in good light.

Towards the end of the month winter prune deciduous trees and shrubs including fruit trees and bushes.

Mulch around all fruit trees and shrubs that have been pruned. Prune trees and shrubs to shape. This involves thinning out unwanted branches and lifting crowns slightly.

If you have any over grown climbers like wisteria or ornamental vines cut them back as needed to

prevent them taking over.
