From as far north as the Arctic Circle and the stunning scenery of the Norwegian Fjords to the warmth of the Canary Islands and Garden Isle of Madeira, we’ve chosen a selection of Fred. Olsen Cruises and added a floral touch to many. See what we have on offer in 2013. BBC garden writer and broadcaster, Tony has been working with plants for 25 years, 13 of which have been spent managing Westonbirt, the National Arboretum in Gloucestershire.

Will Giles has had a passion for plants of a tropical nature since he was a small boy, a passion that has grown dramatically over the past 25 years at his home in Norwich – aptly named The Exotic Garden.

Here, he has experimented with plants from the extremely hardy to the ludicrously tender, endeavouring to find a balance of plants that grow well in his one acre microclimate & fit into his ideal of a lush sub-tropical setting. www.exoticgarden.com

Fred. Olsen are proud of their tradition of smaller ships. Each one in the fleet has its own unique personality, but never loses that friendly, home-from-home atmosphere, where friendships are forged with fellow-passengers and crew alike. Experience an elegant and captivating atmosphere when you cruise on Braemar. Carrying around 900 passengers, Braemar has more than 80 suites and passenger cabins with balconies. The ship’s public rooms feature polished wood, gleaming brass fittings, subtle lighting and attractive fabrics, while the five-deck high atrium gives the vessel a very light and spacious feel. Cascading decks at the stern provide plenty of spaces for sun-bathing, while the vessel also has two open-air swimming pools with a poolside bar and twin jacuzzis. There’s a choice of places to eat: informal in Palms Cafe, or formal in the main Thistle Restaurant and the more intimate Grampian Restaurant.

The largest and newest cruise ship in the fleet offers a wide range of facilities, yet still enjoys a home-fromhome atmosphere. Named after the Scottish home of the Royal Family, Balmoral has accommodation for about 1,300 passengers, through 710 cabins and suites. Eat informally in the Palms Cafe, or more formally in the Ballindalloch, Avon and Spey restaurants on board. Balmoral also benefits from an on-board pub, which offers evening entertainment as an alternative to the main cabarets and dancing in the Neptune or Lido Lounges. Relax with a drink in the Observatory Lounge, with its spectacular views out to sea.

Terms & Conditions: Disclaimer: All fares contained within this brochure are per person based on double occupancy unless stated otherwise. All offers are subject to availability, capacity controlled and can be withdrawn at any time without notice. For full terms & conditions please refer to Fred. Olsen Cruises Worldwide brochure 2013/2014 (available upon request). Please be aware that prices are correct at time of going to print. Every effort has been made to ensure that fares are correct, however customers are advised to confirm by calling Victoria Travel/www.Cruise.co.uk who are acting as agents for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Please note: The experts hosting any of our cruises are subject to personal circumstances permitting and we cannot be held responsible for the cancellation of a host for this reason. In the extreme event that a host has to cancel the cruise, we will, where possible, find a suitable replacement. All cruises will be hosted unless stated or advised otherwise or unless the group does not reach the minimum number of passengers. We plan to visit the gardens detailed, however, should circumstances prevent this - an alternative will be chosen. Printed August 2012. E&OE.

Botanical Gardens & Risco Bello

This tour will be of special interest to guests who enjoy the peace, tranquillity, and abundant colour of the beautiful plants, flowers, and vegetation that inhabit the Canary Islands. Our first visit will be the Jardin Botanico (Botanical Garden) founded by the royal decree of Charles III of Spain in 1788. The purpose was to form an area where plants, shrubs, and flowers brought by the Conquistadors from the New World could acclimate to Spanish soil. Many of the plants in the garden are the original specimens delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish tree house. Our next visit takes us to Risco Bello Garden, a unique style of garden in complete contrast to the Botanical Garden. This venue features attractive waterfalls and colourful terraces of local flowers.

Day 4: San Sebastian, La Gomera La Gomera is one of the smallest and least known of the Canary Islands, but is utterly exquisite. More than a tenth of the island is covered by the Garonjay National Park, a breathtaking landscape of deep gorges, rich vegetation and magnificent views. Day 5: Santa Cruz, La Palma One of the smaller islands, and the capital, Santa Cruz, is quiet – almost sleepy – with peaceful squares and open-air palm-shaded restaurants and bars. One of the prettiest harbours among the islands and easily explored on foot. There’s also the island’s most spectacular volcanic crater, Caldera de Taburiente. This beautiful area is filled with rare animals and plant life and has been designated a national park.

Day 3: La Estaca, El Hierro The coast of El Hierro is rocky and very harsh, with inaccessible cliffs up to 3,000 feet high, natural bays and pools which are perfect for a refreshing swim. Here also, as in the rest of the Canary Islands, it is always spring, with subtropical vegetation in the fertile areas contrasting with the fascinating volcanic heritage of other parts of the island.

FREE PARKING

Day 9: Agadir, Morocco A lively resort, set beside a vast beach. On the wide, modern boulevards there are plenty of cafés and restaurants, but for the sights, sounds and smells of the old town, visit the old port, with markets selling fish, fruit, vegetables and spices. The Musée Municipal is interesting for insights into the preearthquake history of Agadir and to learn about the Berbers, the original inhabitants of Morocco. Day 10: Arrecife, Lanzarote Explore the island’s spectacular moon-like volcanic landscape, best seen from the Fire Mountain in the Timanfaya National Park. Head north and you will discover wonderfully verdant Haria – ‘the valley of a thousand palms’ and can enjoy panoramic views from Mirador del Rio. Day 6 & Day 7: Funchal, Madeira Take advantage of your overnight stay, almost a day and a half to explore this most beautiful island. Delightfully enhanced by a benign climate that fills this ‘floating garden’ with the year-round colours and perfumes of subtropical flowers and fruit. Look out for the optional gardeners’ tour with your hosts. Day 8: Cruising Cruising days introduce you to the gentle rhythms of life on board, with plenty of activities for you to dip in and out of. There will also be plenty of opportunities to indulge your horticultural interests. A gardeners’ talk or two will be scheduled today plus time to enjoy your cruising day after a busy few days ashore.

Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

Located almost 70 degrees north, this Botanic Garden is the northern most in the world. At almost 4.5 acres, this large garden is situated as far north as the northern most parts of Alaska, and was opened in 1994. The extreme arctic climate is not to be found here - thanks to the Gulf Stream the area of Tromsø has a relatively mild winter with the summer being cool with an average temperature in July of 11.8°Celcius (53° Fahrenheit). The garden has a wide variety of plants from different parts of the world, and throughout the season some plants will always be in bloom. The Garden is divided into 20 different geographical or botanical themes (collections). Day 7: Honningsvag (North Cape) The world’s most northerly village, this beautiful little fishing port with distinctive pastel-shaded buildings attracts tourists from all over the world. The gateway to the North Cape, usually considered to be the ‘top of Europe’, Honningsvag is framed by rugged mountains and the grey Arctic Ocean.

Mount Usher Gardens

An overnight stay in Ireland brings many opportunities for both sightseeing and horticultural delights, with a free tour to the gardens of Mount Usher. Voted The Most Romantic Garden to visit in 2010 and The Best Garden to visit in 2009 & 2010 in the Republic of Ireland by BBC Gardener’s World Magazine! This lovely “Robinsonian” garden, laid out along the Vartry River, measures 8ha and dates back to around 1850. The river is spanned by suspension bridges, from which numerous waterfalls and superb views can be enjoyed. There are approximately 5000 different species of plants, shrubs and trees, originating from many parts of the world. The extensive collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and camellias is exceptionally colourful in spring. There are also those shrubs and trees, planted precisely for their display of berries and glorious foliage, to be admired in the autumn. Like all the great gardens of Ireland, Mount Usher offers varying pleasures at different seasons of the year. Rhododendrons in Spring, a blaze of Summer colour and the wistful tints of Autumn, all elegantly set off by the crystal waters of the river. Day 5: Tobermory, Isle of Mull‡ A charming port on the Isle of Mull, with pastelshaded buildings set against a backdrop of rolling hills surrounding a pretty waterfront that is busy with fishing boats and pleasure-craft. The unique Palm House was one of the world’s first cast-iron glass-houses and it houses a wide range of tropical plants, ranging from bananas to rubber. Day 10: Cruising As well as enjoying the ship’s facilities today and hopefully some summer sunshine, there will be a gardeners’ talk for you to enjoy with plenty of time for questions too. Day 11: Southampton Balmoral arrives in Southampton ‡ Ship is at Anchor

Kirkwall feels more Scandinavian than Scottish: in fact the name comes from the Norse for “Church Bay”. The church in question is the 11th century Church of Saint Olaf of Norway. Day 8: Stornoway, Isle of Lewis‡ Located off the western coast of Scotland, Stornoway merges beautiful landscape scenery with historical relics.
