Fractured Landscape ICONOCLAST - Central Park Redesign Competition

In the wake of a fictional eco-terrorism attack, Central Park as we know it ceases to exist. Trees and plant life have died off within a week, and the landscape is a shell of what it had been previously. We are challenged to create a new landscape, to bring back the identity of Central Park and it’s significance within the Manhattan borough and New York City as a whole. My proposal extends the uniform city grid into the new park, abstracting and deforming as connections are made to other entrances. From there, the ground is split and extruded, creating a fractured landscape that introduces new activity into the city. Outdoor rappelling and climbing are now available as recreation, as are more conventional methods of entertainment such as walking your dog, people watching, and throwing a frisbee. Pulling the ground up creates a terraced effect, with different levels creating more segmented public spaces meant to be shared by fewer groups of people at a time. By adding the vertical to the new Central Park, eye level is now above the treeline and at the same height as roofs of 6 or 7 story walkups, common sights through all of Manhattan. This new perspective on the city allows for the sharing of views that only select buildings on the North end of the Park typically receive, giving these views to all of the millions of yearly park visitors, instead of just a handful of New Yorkers. For Central Park to remain such a prominent New York icon in the aftermath of an eco-terrorism attack, it needs to pave the way for what a modern park is. By raising the ground plane above the tree line, and providing for new activities not conventionally seen in parks, Central Park can once again be the standard by which all public parks are compared.

Z-Haus OTR 2018 Department of Energy Race to Zero Competition

From 2014 to 2018, the U.S. Department of Energy ran a design competition for students, challenging teams to design structures of varying programmatic requirements that resulted in net zero buildings. The team I was on, Z-Haus OTR, consisted of 4 architecture students and 3 architectural engineering students, and was the only team from the University of Cincinnati that progressed to finals presentation in Golden, Colorado. We partnered with a local non-profit, Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC), to choose an appropriate site, and settled on 1531 Pleasant St., located in Over-the-Rhine (OTR), a neighborhood that has seen large scale revitilization since 2000. With public transit providing quick access to all of Cincinnati just a block away, the local farmer’s market a 5 minute walk away, and a plethora of historic buildings and new developments within a mile radius, we knew this would be the perfect location to begin design. As one of the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2018,” and as a city that is a hotspot for startups, we knew our target audience would be for a young family, with 1-2 children. We then strived to design the interior with comfort and a healthy mix of private and public spaces in mind, while relying on the fabric of the surrounding buildings to drive a common language for the exterior.

Cincinnati, as a city, has a fairly uniform look. With new developments straying from the typical Italianate and Germanic architecture, various groups have been calling for a return to the older styles. The OTR Foundation was publishing a set of guidelines as we were starting our initial designs, guidelines that called for, among others, primary use of brick on the exterior, a primarily vertically-oriented facade, and a relative uniformity in height between new developments and existing buildings. Wanting to somewhat conform to these new guidelines, my team performed glazing optimization studies using Sefaira and Sketchup, finding that a 30-40% surfaceto-glazing ratio would provide the most optimal light against loss of energy through the panes. Keeping in mind the emphasis on the vertical, 3 floors were required to fit the program while simultaneously allowing for a large surface area to place windows. Along with the above surface-to-glazing studies, the team also studied how overall form would impact energy loss, and found that a “deep-L, as we called it, would give us the required square footage, while maintaing the architectural look stressed by the OTR Foundation and be remniscent of other similar floor layouts in the surrounding streets.

Architecture Co-ops K4 Architecture Jackson Liles Architecture

I spent my first two co-ops in Cincinnati, OH, working at K4 Architecture. During my first semester of work, I spent most of my time on a school renovation and addition in Kentucky. The majority of the program was adding a gymnasium with auxiliary spaces (a fitness center, concessions, and running track) as well as a daycare and media center. On this project, I touched a little bit of everything, from construction details to construction administration, as well as preliminary research and sketches for contractors. This project is currently under construction, with scheduled completion at some point in 2019. My second semester of work with K4 was spent working primarily on a series of projects for a chain of shops in Ohio. The chain was looking to rebrand and, depending on the location, would rebuild or build new, do a full interior gut and renovation, or just a remodel of graphics and some equipment. Specifically, I worked on three of the renovation projects, creating a majority of the base drawings for construction as well as some detail work. My final co-op was spent in San Francisco, CA, working with Jackson Liles Architecture. While there, I got the opportunity to work on a number of various size projects, from design development on a preschool to design development and renderings on a new shipping facility for the Bay Area. Additionally, I assisted with preliminary code review and schematic design for a client looking to expand on their current site.
