A CARNIVAL OF DIVERSITY 5
WELCOME Dear friends, Brighton & Hove Pride is a Pride to be proud of. Alongside with the smiles, sunshine (hopefully) and good times, our sole ethos is to promote tolerance and diversity within our communities. As a not for profit community interest organisation, supporting local community groups and charities is the cornerstone of everything we do. We are a ‘Pride with Purpose’. As one of the UK’s most popular international Pride Festivals, Brighton Pride attracts a diverse demographic audience from across the globe and is singularly the most popular visitor attraction in the City’s event calendar. It is our opportunity to celebrate the unique diversity and quirkiness of our fabulous city. Pride is as famous, vibrant, popular and utterly unique as our City itself. One of most frequently asked questions when it comes to Pride can be “Why do we need a Pride?” Given the huge improvement in equalities over the last decade with protections written in to law and a legal recognition of same sex partnerships, then it is understandable that some people, including some within the LGBT community, might think that we've won the fight for freedom. However in five counties across the globe homosexuality is still punishable with the death penalty, while a further 70 imprison citizens because of who they are. Our Pride will continue to raise awareness of the plight of Global LGBT communities who do not have the same freedoms that we enjoy in the United Kingdom.

This year Pride are also introducing a respect campaign that encourages and supports respect for all our communities (please see page 46). We are also asking for support from local businesses to help with our fundraising effort for a new community Social Impact Fund (see page 8). This years Pride promises to be a truly inclusive city-wide celebration when our community comes together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Pride in The City with a wonderful “Carnival of Diversity”. There’s no better time support the City’s amazing and diverse community event that is Brighton & Hove Pride. Everyone’s welcome, join in, get involved, laugh, cry, express yourself, have fun and come celebrate your Freedom to Live. WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO? A Pride with purpose, Brighton Pride has raised over £107,000 for The Rainbow Fund in the past two years thanks to the support of businesses, sponsors and the many thousands of you that purchase tickets for the Pride Festival in Preston Park and Pride Village Party. But aside from community fundraising for the the Rainbow Fund where does your ticket money go? Brighton Pride CIC, a not for profit community interest company (CIC), all tickets revenue raised goes directly to the operational and running costs of producing the Pride Festival, LGBT Community Parade, Pride Village Party and community fundraising. Our sole aim to provide benefit to

SOCIAL IMPACT FUND
the community or to trade with a “social purpose,” rather than to make a private profit, and we work hard to ensure not only are fundraising targets reached but that Pride delivers value for money. Your Brighton Pride Festival ticket money pays for vital infrastructure and services across Preston Park to ensure a safe and enjoyable day for all, from entertainment and wellbeing to security and production. For example, Pride 2014 spent £30,117 on power, £51,190 on sound and lighting, £33,477 on crew costs, £25,685 on toilets and £15,685 on waste management whilst £10,057 was spent on police, £18,324 on St John’s Ambulance and £93,357 on Parade and Park security and stewarding, and that’s just a fraction of the overall costs of staging a world class Pride event.
Brighton Pride is recognised as one of the very best in the UK, but in today’s economic climate isn’t a cheap proposition to produce such a large scale event. Regular festival goers will recognise that most commercial festival tickets carry a much higher price. Pride has simlar production costs to other commercial events but with anticipated increases in cleaning, security and policing costs over the next few years we face significant challenges. We aim to deliver an accessible community event that is award-winning, critically acclaimed and value for money, as well as fundraising and creating a sustainable future. Thank you for buying your ticket and helping us make it so.
Pride brings in over £13.8 million to the city’s economy over the Pride weekend. This year Pride intend to set up a Social Impact Fund that could help raise money towards community projects in areas of the City most impacted by the Price celebrations. Pride hope more local businesses will get involved and support this fundraising effort especially the businesses who benefit from the extra business over Pride. There are lots of ways businesses can get involved, big and small, this may be as easy as taking a collection tin or helping with the fundraising effort. There are many scene venues and businesses who support the community all year round with fundraising activities, but it would be lovely to see more businesses help with Pride’s community fundraising effort.
Brighton Pride director explains. “It’s always lovely to see all the businesses flying the rainbow flag over the Pride weekend and all the extra businesses thats brought into the City. Pride is committed to our ongoing fundraising for the Rainbow fund but we intend to set up a new fund that could benefit all our communities in the area’s most affected by the social impact of the Pride weekend celebrations. Our priority remains to deliver a safe and sustainable Pride weekend but we are asking for the continued support of local venues, businesses and hotels to help us raise extra funds towards a new social impact fund that could benefit wider community projects” As a not for profit community interest company, Pride have limited resources with all ticket revenue going directly to the operational and running costs of producing the Pride Festival, LGBT community Parade, Pride Village Party and our fundraising contribution towards the Rainbow Fund. Pride will be publishing a Friends of Pride Community Guide that includes all supporting businesses and awards for top supporting businesses will be given at the Rainbow Fund grants awards at the Hilton hotel in September. Please support these businesses who help Pride deliver extra fundraising for our community.

25 YEARS PROUD 10

the hIStory oF prIde In brIghton In 1991 the LGBT community were years away from equality. No equal age of consent, barred from the armed forces, our families with no legal protection, labelled “pretend”. Civil partnership and same-sex marriage were decades away and government legislation, in the form of Section 28, banned local authorities from promoting homosexuality. And yet we weren’t pretending. Our Pride was real and set to become an important part of LGBT life in Brighton and Hove. The first Brighton Gay Pride took place on Saturday 7th July 1973 with a march from Norfolk Square to The Ship Hotel, followed by a Gay Dance at The Royal Albion Hotel and a Gay Picnic on the Sunday. But it wasn’t until 1991 that the Brighton Pride we know today began. Born from protest-fuelled beginnings, Pride emerged from years of annual marches organised by Brighton Area Action against Section 28. The strong and creative community action that had been built in defiance of Section 28 soon lead to a desire to proclaim Pride together. From those early days of marching from Hove’s Town Hall and a Pink Picnic in Preston Park, the News Of the World’s negative response to Queer On The Pier, and days out on in Queen’s Park and The Level, to its present day Community Parade, Pride Festival on Preston Park and Pride Village Party, Brighton Pride has grown into the biggest Pride event in the UK with over almost 250,000 people enjoying the citywide celebrations over the Pride weekend. But it’s not been sunshine and smiles all the way. Under previous management, partly due to poor contributions that averaged at only 20p per person, Pride ran up over £200k of debts and in 2011 went bankrupt. From 2012, the current management have raised over £110k for local LGBT community groups and Pride has become a truly inclusive event featuring everything from live performance, cabaret, dance tents, line dancing, literature, community events, the Arts & Film Festival, sports and plenty of family fun. It’s enjoyed glorious sunshine days and the occasional rainy one. Its changed date, parade routes, it’s been awarded charitable status and emerged from financial uncertainty to become a Community Interest Company. It’s even endured the odd antigay protest with humorous good grace. Since 1991, Brighton Pride has blossomed by campaigning, celebrating and, most importantly, connecting communities. Pride and its generous supporters have worked hard to fundraise for local LGBT charities and organisations, campaign for the global Freedom To Live and represent every aspect of our diverse LGBT community. It brings so many aspects of our city together – charitable, voluntary, political, business - allowing us to achieve so much. From its glitter to its grit, from the partying to the fundraising, Pride has a history we should all be proud of. with thanks to Alf Le Flohic
Brighton Pride is our Pride. A pride with purpose. Pride is more than just a day out, more than a party. It is a unique opportunity to bring people together and celebrate the diversity of our communities.

SUpportIng Lgbt CoMMUnItIeS As one of the UK’s biggest Pride festivals, Brighton Pride leads the way in campaigning for the rights of our global LGBT community. Campaigning to highlight global LGBT communities and community fundraising is at the cornerstone of everything Pride represents. As Brighton Pride celebrates its 25th anniversary of Pride In The City, Pride continues to put the global LGBT community at the centre of everything it does. By highlighting the lives of LGBT communities across the globe Brighton Pride asks us to look beyond our own backyard and engage with those LGBT people living in countries who criminalise or persecute them purely because of their gender or sexuality. The Egyptian governments recent crackdown on the freedoms enjoyed by gay men with increasing arrests and prosecutions, the horrific pictures allegedly showing two gay men being thrown to
their deaths from the top of a tower released by the self proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) and the continuing legislative process in the United States against the Supreme Courts ruling in favour of same-sex marriage reminds us of how far we have yet to go as a global community in the fight for LGBT equality. Brighton Pride 2015’s Freedom to Live campaign, started in 2013, will show that as a LGBT community here in the UK we can stand beside those in other countries and campaign for the freedom to live. The 2015 Pride Community Parade will highlight the 78 countries where it is illegal to be homosexual or engage in homosexual conduct by once again including 78 placards representing those countries on the parade. Amongst the Pride celebrations, we will remember, we will campaign and we will connect to the many LGBT communities across the globe fighting for the freedom to live. Brighton Pride, proud to be a voice for others, proud to be a Pride with purpose.

With over 50 million views the global reaction to break Free and its examination of gender fluidity and gender stereotypes was amazing. how did that feel for you? Break Free was many years in the making. I just had not taken a break in ten years and so when I finally had the down time I thought, okay, I’m not working, what am I doing here? I started creation from a foundation level. I shot Break Free in a day, edited it the next and then it was online. I never anticipated that it would be as huge as it turned out and I never imagined the volume of people who would be touched by the video. Break Free was a dream come true and I’m so glad I made it. It’s been a long time coming but is gender fluidity finally being addressed in the mainstream? Its all been baby steps, sometimes individuals come out (excuse the pun) like Ellen or Laverne and help us take giant leaps but generally we are going at a slow pace. Its all the small things that add up and gain momentum. Shows incorporating gender fluid characters, celebrities coming out as gender queer, trans* people getting screen time and magazine covers. Also I think it has been great for people to know a term or label for things that represents the way they feel, that they may not have felt were real, or accepted or experienced by other people.

I felt very comfortable and at home playing Stella. I love the show as it covers all types of demographics, religions, sex, gender identity, sexuality, and age. And it tells a story with heart. brighton pride is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. When you look back at those early days of gay liberation how do you feel it compares with today? We should always be grateful with how far we have come because of those of us who have fought the fight to get us to today, but we are far from finished. We need to eradicate violence towards the global LGBT+ community, and guarantee access to health and housing. LGBT+ rights should be our human rights. Are you looking forward to dJing at brighton pride? It is my first time and I am stoked! I love the UK. When DJing I jump about a lot and I’m pretty goofy but the music is always good. Through the testimonies of representatives from countries where homosexuality and transgender identification is criminalised, We Are Pride also examines the global LGBT+ rights movement and the importance of demonstrating solidarity with communities living in repressive conditions. We Are Pride reminds the viewer that the term LGBT+ and the community it represents has become an important part of the fabric of multicultural Britain, synonymous with a wider regard for human rights. Directed by Flora Berkeley and produced by Richard King of Spirited Pictures, We Are Pride will premier at the Pride Festival on the main screen on Saturday 1st August 2015, and will be available to view online at Brighton-Pride.org, and is an open invitation to the viewer, however they self-define, to join in the celebration of a society that privileges equality, diversity and freedom of expression. Spirited Pictures’ Flora Berkeley said: “Pride is important to us as a celebration and also as a part of a wider global movement with a rich history and a lot of work still ahead of it. While we’re celebrating our freedom we must remember the many people who are living in repressive situations all over the world. Until everyone is free from persecution and able to live as themselves and love without fear our freedom is incomplete.” www.spiritedpictures.org
IRELAND’S HIGH (DRAG) QUEEN PANTI BLISS CHATS TO PRIDE ExCLUSIVELY TO BRIGHTON PRIDE ABOUT IRELAND’S HISTORIC ‘YES’ VOTE, PANTIGATE AND HER NEW SHOW HIGH HeeLs In LOW PLACes Ireland’s foremost gender illusionist Rory O’Neill a.k.a. Panti was propelled into ‘Pantigate’ after her remarkable interview on RTE’s Saturday Night Show. Stirring emotions she argued that journalists and organisations that actively campaign for LGBT+ citizens to have less rights than their straight counterparts, were in effect homophobic. Her follow-up speech about homophobia and oppression at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, described by Fintan O'Toole as “the most eloquent Irish speech in 200 years”, became a viral sensation, supported by Stephen Fry and Madonna and debated in Ireland’s parliament. Brighton Pride are excited to announce that Panti will be speaking at the Pride Festival in Preston Park and performing her new show High Heels In Low Place at the BPAFF Pink Fringe. Something Panti is also very excited about. “I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the special (and especially gay!) energy that Brighton always seems to have,” said Panti “That, and the fellas! I’ll be immersing myself in the fellas.” It’s been a jubilant time for Panti after the historic
Yes vote in Ireland’s Same Sex Marriage Referendum. “It has been an incredible experience to be Irish at this time. We are the first country in the world to put marriage equality to a popular vote, and the first to enshrine that right in our constitution through such a powerful, incontestable mechanism. It feels incredible that Irish people, after a long and difficult campaign, have fully embraced the humanity and equality of LBGTI people. It’s a powerful message to Ireland gay citizens and it feels wonderful!” As for those High Heels In Low Places? Expect “pearls of gay wisdom, stories, laughs, food for thought, perhaps a tear, and two wigs for extra volume” explains Panti. “My shows have always mined my real life experiences for entertainment and illustration, and Pantigate was too good to waste! SOCIAL, ECONOMIC & CULTURAL IMPACT 35
SOCIAL IMPACT - SOCIAL COHESION pride provides a citywide cohesion and focus for the wider community with its positive influence lasting long thought out the year which cannot be underestimated. The very nature of Pride being an immersive and inclusive festival and celebration builds lasting community capital that is difficult to measure but easy to see. What is easy to measure is the money that is generated by Pride, not only from ticket sales on the festival in the Park but also across the city. Pride is the largest community event in the City with benefits not only for community groups and charities but also the wider city services, tourism and commercial venues’ profits. Pride is not just a weekend of parades and parties for the majority of the cities LGBT population, it’s the time when their friends, relatives, neighbours and the city itself, recognises them, their relationships and the vibrant breadth of culture and community that the wider LGBT community brings to the quality of life in the city. Pride is a city wide celebration of the value of the LGBT communities to the city. Pride provides a citywide cohesion and focus for the wider community with its positive influence lasting throughout the year which cannot be underestimated. In simple terms it makes you feel part of it and this increases self-confidence, happiness and wellbeing. Pride empowers communities, enlightens, educates and embraces an equal and diverse society for all.

LGBT ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS @ PRIDE Brighton & Hove’s LGBT Community Safety Forum work with Pride to provide unparalleled Access facilities and services for the deaf, disabled, elderly and those with mobility issues. Again this year, the deaf, disabled, elderly and those with mobility issues will have a Safe Space at the head of the Pride Community Parade. Brighton Pride are aware that many deaf, disabled and older Pride goers will need to march in a space where access stewards are available to prevent them from being crowded out or bumped into, where they can feel confident and therefore proud. The Access Tent at 2015’s Pride Festival will be in a new position at the southern end of Preston Park making it easier to get to from the parade finish area. The Access Tent will not just be a meeting point but a safe space and place to report any incidents. The Tent will also serve as a key information point for Pride, and will have an information desk outside the tent, a sign language interpreter present at all times and accessible portaloos within its grounds, accessible only though the tent, not accessible directly from outside.
PRIDE MATTERS SIMon FAnShAWe “FreedoM to LIve” I walk out of my front door with not a care. I am a known homo in lots of my life. It never scares me. I live in Brighton and work in London, Manchester, Edinburgh.......all over the UK. I am free to live. But in 76/194 states in the world we are not free to live. This is not even about love or sex. It's about going to the shops to get milk and being safe. It's about meeting your friends and feeling safe. It's about reading any book that I want without the police using it as evidence. It's about the everyday moments of everyday life. It's about the everyday freedoms that, as individuals, we take for granted. The freedom to live free of threats, violence and harassment are basic human rights. Every time you buy milk.... shout it out. I have the freedom to live, I want others in the world to have it too. To fight for that freedom is something to have PRIDE in. Support Pride for a reason. peter tAtCheLL, prIde MAtterS I am proud to support Brighton and Hove Pride. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community makes a vibrant, positive contribution to the city; enriching its cultural diversity. As well as being a fabulous celebration and party, Pride is an important manifestation of our continuing campaign for LGBT dignity, respect, acceptance and human rights. Despite having won almost complete legal equality, queer-bashing violence and homophobic bullying still exist. It is outrageous that half of all LGBT pupils have experienced homophobia at school and that half the country's schools still don't have an anti-bullying programme that specifically addresses homophobic bullying. Equally alarming, one third of the LGBT people have been victims of hate crimes. This shows why Pride is still necessary - and why it matters to me. We've won the battle for same-sex marriage in the UK but about 80 countries still criminalise homosexuality, with penalties ranging up to life imprisonment and even the death penalty. The battle for LGBT equality is a worldwide struggle. Despite setbacks in Russia, Cameroon, India, Nigeria and Uganda, the overall global trend is towards greater rights for LGBT people. Queer freedom is an unstoppable international phenomenon. My appeal to you is: Don't accept homophobia. Dream of a world without the persecution of LGBT people. Make homophobia history. Chief Superintendent nev Kemp was appointed Divisional Commander for Brighton and Hove in 2013, seventeen years after joining the police. On becoming Division Commander he took on the role of the forces LGBT Champion. As the Gold Commander policing Pride it is his responsibility to deliver a safe event, not only for the LGBT community, but also for local residents and visitors to the city. He understands the economic importance of Pride to the City of Brighton and Hove and most importantly to the Rainbow Fund who receive £1 a head from every ticket sold to distribute to LGBT/HIV organisations providing effective front line services to the LGBT community in Brighton and Hove. However, in 2013 problems emerged during the Pride Village Party. His feedback from police officers was that the event was darker and less safe than in previous years. Officers reported that the tone of the event was less friendly and that areas of the Pride Village Party were at times dangerous and threatening. A new approach to the Village Party was required and an agreement was reached to work in partnership with the Pride organisers, the City Council and other agencies to produce and deliver a paid for Pride Village Party event in 2014 that was safer for everyone and would give visitors to

the city a positive impression of Brighton and Hove.
thousands of capsules. This year we will be doing exactly the same.
Commander Kemp said: “I spoke to a police officer last year who said this is now a great event, and if off duty, he could now come and would really enjoy it, whereas the previous year it felt unsafe.
“Another fairly big challenge for us was the issue of respect for people, including police officers on duty. During the day sexual assaults were going unreported, including on some of the uniformed security staff and police officers on duty. I have not only a responsibility for the public but also for my own officers, so this year I would like to see more emphasis on respecting people's boundaries. From a policing perspective officers involved tell me Pride is a great event and they really want to support it. We don't want to cause upset by being kill joys but on the other-hand people are entitled not to be groped and grabbed during the event.
“Pride is one of the most challenging events we deliver in Brighton and Hove. For sussex Police it is up there with the Lewes Bonfire, except there are many more people at Pride with estimates of up to 160,000 revellers on the streets. “With Pride, there are a number of events that go on throughout the day stretching officers shifts. We need to refresh our numbers which means we use a lot of officers and need to bring some in from outside sussex to provide cover. “Drugs are quite a big challenge, especially when they are mixed with alcohol and last year in particular nitrous oxide legal highs proved to be a big problem. We seized tens of thousands of capsules, the difficulty we had is that it is not illegal to sell them to people over 18, so we had to use a really old bit of legislation, which we don't often use, the Pedlars Act of 1881, to stop them being sold. If people selling the canisters didn't have a Pedlars License we were able to use that as the grounds to seize their stock. “For example there was one young girl who the consultant on duty at the sussex County Hospital A & e thought was going to die. she had taken nitrous oxide and drunk alcohol. Her survival was touch and go. “For sussex Police it is not about preventing people at Pride having fun. We are never going to say don't drink, but last year the combination of nitrous oxide and alcohol, did worry us. We did what we could, and seized
“The officers we use on the day are a mixture of specialist public order and general neighbourhood policing officers. I spoke to some officers last year who had worked on Pride for the first time. Most of them really enjoyed the day and were more concerned that they had been on their feet 15 hours with only a bite to eat at the start of the day. “Pride generally has a great atmosphere and people are really pleased to see the police marching on the Pride Parade. For my officers it is a unique experience and those officers from outside sussex are often quite goggle eyed at the scale of Pride, what goes on and the general carnival atmosphere. “Last year my daughters who are 15 and 16 came, they absolutely loved it and want to come again this year. I personally would like one year not to police it and just go with my family and enjoy Pride with them. “The safety of people at Pride is really important and that does cost money from the police budget.
“In terms of partnership working, I have got a very good relationship with Pride and they have been very responsive to concerns raised in the post event agency debrief. “This year for the first time I have tried to agree with Pride how things are going to look over at least the next three years, rather than doing it just a year at a time. “Overall Pride costs more than £300,000 to police. Much of that is things like policing the parade and the rest of the city. “now that Pride is a ticketed and paid for event we have guidelines to follow and are required to charge for elements of the services we provide when we are policing inside Preston Park and the Pride Village Party. “This will not include officers who are working in plain clothes, identifying people who are trying to steal people’s bags and that sort of thing. Also we won't be charging for things like arrest teams. Literally, we will be
charging for a contribution towards the uniformed officers that are dedicated to police inside Preston Park and The Pride Village Party as they are paid for ticketed events. To give you an idea, what we charge this year will work out at about 12 % of the total cost of policing Pride for sussex Police. “The Association of Chief Police officers (ACPO) have guidance which says if an event is ticketed 100% of the policing costs should be charged. A reduction can be made for a charity. Pride being a CIC does not fit the matrix criteria which are fairly strict for getting a reduction but, as Division Commander and LGBT Champion, I have discretion to make a decision, so what I have done for 2014 is give a 50% discount on costs which is £25,000 and next year and onwards I am going to give a 25% discount on costs. We will only ever charge 75% of the very limited costs we seek to recoup for policing the total event. “I want Pride to be a success because I think it is brilliant for the city. It is
one of the best things that happens and the last thing I want is to do anything that undermines its success. However, on the other hand my budgets have been hugely reduced this year and even when we get up to a 75% cost contribution towards policing Preston Park and the Pride Village Party, it will only represent about 12% of the total cost of policing the event. so 88% of the policing of Pride is funded by the tax payer, or to be more precise out of sussex Police budgets. I think that is pretty generous and what I have tried to do is say to Pride, this is what it will be like this year, next year and in the future, step by step, so at least they can plan and budget for the future making the event more sustainable. From a policing perspective if Pride were not running the Village Party it would be a massive headache for us. The last thing we want to do is undermine that or compromise it in any way. The Pride organisers work very hard, do a very good job and deserve to be rewarded for their efforts like everyone else.”
“I want pride to be a success because I think it is brilliant for the city. It is one of the best things that happens.” Chief superintendent nev Kemp
