WELCOME TO BRIGHTON & HOVE PRIDE 2014 Welcome to the 24th Annual Brighton & Hove Pride Festival 2014. This year is set to be the biggest and best so far with the return of the Pride Arts & Film Festival which featured last year for the first time and was deemed an enormous success. A highlight of the Pride weekend is undoubtedly the Community Parade and this year we have more entries than ever. Our theme for 2014 is “The World’s a Disco” so expect a dazzling display of music, dance and colour from around the globe. Dancing under the campaigning theme, Freedom to Live, we will be highlighting global LGBT communities whose basic right to live freely is denied. This year’s Preston Park Festival is bursting at the seams with an array of amazing vocal, entertainment and DJ talent. The Main Stage is back with some big name headlining acts as is the Legends Cabaret Tent with your favourite cabaret performers and a new supersized Wild Fruit Dance Tent . New for this year is the Q Stage, featuring an impressive lineup of alternative vocalists and bands and, of course, the Men’s Tent, Girls’ Tent and Calabash Tent all make a very welcome return. Pride will be running the Village Party this year, which for the first time will be pledge-banded. Take a look at our Pride Village Party pages for more information on what will be a fabulous celebration in the heart of Brighton’s gay village. We hope you find our little pocket guide useful - it’s packed with details of Pride events and parties, maps and information and everything you need to enjoy Brighton & Hove Pride. Do check our website at www.brighton-pride.org for more information and updates. Finally, a huge thank you to all the sponsors and supporters, artists and DJs, volunteers and everyone who has helped us to deliver what promises to be a very special Pride. We salute you!

LAVERNE COX IT’S TIME FOR T 10
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LAVERNE COX The hugely successful Netflix exclusive drama, Orange Is The New Black, is now streaming its second season and has brought a new posse of rising stars to our screens, both in the US and over here in Blighty. The series, referred to as OITNB by its army of fans, is based on the book Orange Is The New Black: My Time in a Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman and follows the lives and back stories of the women who are serving their time. Perhaps the brightest of those emerging stars for us at Pride is Laverne Cox who has brought to life the character of Sophia Burset, a transgender woman incarcerated in the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary who is also the resident beautician and hairdresser. The lovely Laverne took time out from her busy schedule to chat to us at Pride about life back on the set of Season Two and about her exceptional work as a Trans advocate. has a story. Just because a person is incarcerated does not mean that they are no longer a human being sometimes people end up in prison because of an unjust social structure. There are all sorts of injustices and reasons people land up in prison that are really not necessarily a reflection of their moral character but of systemic circumstances. It’s beautiful that we get to experience the deep humanity of this diverse group of women that audiences are seeing themselves in, in different ways”.
When asked about the instant hit and about why she thinks it has been so popular from the outset, Laverne puts it down to the story. “There has never been a show like this before”, she says, “there’s just not anything like it. The story telling is just fantastic, with characters that people relate to and circumstances and stories that folks are really investing in”. The very personal and often touching backstories for each of the prisoners strikes a poignant contrast to the stark backdrop of a correctional facility as Laverne explains; “Every sentence

The programme will focus on the case of CeCe McDonald, an African American trans woman who served 19 months of a 41 month jail term in a men’s prison. “We’re doing a documentary about her story and about the cultural violence against trans women”. Laverne is also executive producing a documentary for MTV and Logo called Trans Teen due to be screened in the States in the Autumn. “I’m a story teller both as an actress and an advocate” she explains, “I’m interested in elevating the stories of trans folks that don’t have the platform that I have and I believe through story-telling we can tell those stories in a really human way, that people can connect with those stories and we can really change lives”. FREEDOM TO LIVE At Brighton Pride, we are dedicated to delivering a Pride with Purpose. In addition to our fundraising objectives, we are also committed to raising awareness of LGBT issues, both locally and around the globe. Given the huge improvements in equalities over the last decade and changes in the law and in attitudes, it is understandable we might think we’ve won the fight for freedom. Dig a little deeper, however, and there is still a way to go, even here in the UK. Further afield, there are countries around the world that still actively persecute and ciminalise LGBT people, just for being who they are. It is still illegal to be homosexual in 78 countries. Look out for our walking tableau in the parade where placards will be carried to show solidarity with LGBT people in those countries and challenge those governments to uphold the basic human rights that we in the UK can take for granted. We continue to highlight these issues throughout the year with our social media and web campaigns. Pride is the largest fundraiser for The Rainbow Fund - last year we raised over £43,000 and we hope to top this amount in 2014. The Rainbow Fund is a Brighton & Hove based grant-giving fund for local LGBT and HIV/AIDS organisations and over the last four years, a range of local groups have benefited from the fund, including MindOut, Lunch Positive, Allsorts, Sussex Beacon, Older & Out, The Justin Campaign, FTM and GEMS, improving the lives of many.

ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS We want Pride to be an event that everyone can enjoy and The Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum have been working hard to make the Parade and Park as accessible as we can. If you would like to register for assistance, then please do so at www.lgbt-help. com/pride/accessibility-matters by Wednesday 30th July. As part of our commitment, we may provide deaf or disabled ticket holders that require full time assistance with an additional ticket at no extra cost for their assistants. The Parade For the first time, the deaf, disabled, elderly and those with mobility issues will have a safe space at the head of the Parade. This will be a safe space within the parade where access stewards will be on hand to help prevent crowding out of being bumped into and our pride goers in this area can feel confident and proud. A sign language interpreter will also be available in the safe space and all our stewards and personnel will be thoroughly briefed prior to the event. If you wish to take part in the parade, please ensure you register and on the day please arrive by 9.45am and look out for the LGBT Community Safety Forum and Accessibility Matters flags and banners. For spectators, a viewing area by the Sea Life Centre and opposite the pier will have a designated accessible area for people with mobility issues and they may bring one person into the area with them. Seats will be available to those who have booked through registration. The Access Tent The Access Tent will be in its usual position at the Northern end of the park and there will be signage throughout the park to direct you to us. The tent will

ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS
not only be a meeting point, but also a safe space, an information point and a reporting point for any hate incidents. There will be wheelchair and scooter recharging points and additional sockets for charging phones etc. The tent will have a staffed information desk outside the front of the tent with a sign language interpreter at all times. There will also be accessible portaloos and we will be operating a freedom pass scheme to provide toilet access to those who need it most. There are staffed accessible toilets throughout the park and we can provide a map to assist you in locating them. Tea, coffee, water and snacks will be available from our Community CafÊ with all proceeds to go towards the infrastructure of the access facilities. We have partnered with Lunch Positive to provide cooked meals for people in the Access Tent - Meals On Heels - where drag queens will take orders and serve meals. The meals will be charged at Lunch Positive’s very reasonable rates and a set menu will be made available in advance. A watering, feeding and toilet facility will be made available for guide and assistance dogs. Changing Facilities A separate tent will serve as a changing tent both for those disabled people who may wish to change their clothes and also for trans people who wish to change in a discreet environment. A baby and child changing facility will be made available for disabled adults and children. Sign Language Interpreters In addition to the availability of Sign Language Interpreters at the Access Tent, a programme of British Sign Language interpreted performances will be made though out the park on the day. There will also be a one-to-one sign language service
53
ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS where you can book your interpreter to accompany you whether you wish to explore the park, order some food or visit the many park attractions. This service is provided in partnership with CONVERSANT who are providing a team of LGBT-friendly interpreters. Stage Viewing Areas There will be viewing areas at all the main stages - anyone wishing to make use of these areas will need a Viewing Area Pass, which can be requested when you register at www. lgbt-help.com/pride/accessibility-matters. Every area will have a steward ready to assist people when needed. Parking & Transport For the Parade, Blue Badge holders will be permitted to park at the Dukes Mound end of Madeira Drive but will need to make their own way to the viewing area or to the Safe Space assembly point nearby. If you have registered with us and have requested parking, then you may wish to park at our Prestamex parking facilities adjacent to Preston Park then travel down by taxi to the start of the Parade. If you wish to do this, then you must arrive at Prestamex car park no later than 10am. If you are not taking part in the parade, but wish to travel to the Park after watching it, then you will need make your own way to the park or to our parking facilities at Prestamex on London Road. Any taxi transport will be at the cost of the individual. A golf cart shuttle service will operate between Prestamex car park and the Access Tent throughout the day. Once again, to register for any of our Accessibilty Matters services, please visit www.lgbt-help.com/pride/accessibility-matters. Have a wonderful and safe Pride.
